Here's an idea I've (somewhat belatedly) come up with, which is based on the same thing as Scott Mills' Now Roulette feature, but uses the Xmas chart's instead of Now albums. Every day from today (with two picks due to missing the 1st of December) until either 24th or 25th I will use a random number generator to pick a year from 1952 to 2021 (or 2022 once this year's Xmas chart is announced) and then to pick a position from 1 to whatever the chart goes to down to in that year, I will then find out what was at that position in the xmas chart of that year and put it on here as a sort of advent calendar of daily audio, and even I don't know in advance what will end up being included in the thread. So here goes:

1st December

Random Year: 2014

Random Postition: 73

Ariana Grande ft Zedd - Break Free (peaked at #16)

I have to be honest, I wasn't sure at first if I knew this one, but then I played it and was like "oh it's thaaaaat one!".

2nd December

Random Year: 1954

Random Position: 4

Rosemary Clooney - This Ole House (peaked at #1)

From one extreme date-wise to the other, but definitely a classic.

So let me know if you like this idea, and what you think of each day's random xmas chart pick....

Quite random but why not! That’s one of Ariana’s better songs; deserved a higher peak. And love This Ole House - definitely has a lot more get up and go and quirkiness to it than most of the 1954 hits, and that’s the best version of it. :)

Break Free remains Ariana Grande's best ever song.

I'd never heard any other version of This Ole House before, I'll stick with Shaky I think.

Break Free remains Ariana Grande's best ever song.

'No Tears Left To Cry' respectfully disagrees.

I'm liking the idea of this thread.

Love the Ariana track, but wouldn't have been able to sing a note of it until I played it to remind me what it sounded like.

I didn't know it was a cover when Shakin Stevens did This Ole House. I agree the 1954 version here isn't that bad at all.

'Break Free' is one of my least favourite Ariana songs oops, always found it pretty overproduced and tacky, not to mention some truly dreadful diction x ('My Everything' is also my least favourite of her albums, which is a bit of a hot take, it has its moments but that is not one of them).

Neat idea here, intrigued to see what kind of oddities may crop up.

3rd December

Random Year: 1981

Random Position: 26

Kool and the Gang - Get Down On It (peaked at #3)

I like the randomness of it :D

I bought the Ariana track, but need to remind myself of it, and also Kool & The Gang. I'm sure Ive got This Ole House on a 50's compilation CD too

Love this idea!

Didn’t realise that ‘This Ole House’ was as old as 1954!

I probably discovered both the Rosemary and Shaky versions of 'This Ole House' while doing a marathon of all the #1 hits for the first time. I like hers more!

'Love Me Harder' and 'One Last Time' are by far the singles I return to the most from My Everything but 'Break Free' is still fairly good.

1981 is a standout chart year for me <3 'Get Down On It' is pretty funky representation B-)

Yeh ‘This Ole House’ 1954 sounds like a house wife literally singing it while she cleans 🤣 plenty of ads have used it I would say!

4th December

Random Year: 1987

Random Position: 11

Simply Red - Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye (peaked at #11)

A Cole Porter standard, but a version of this song I don't recall ever knowing about before.

5th December

Random Year: 1998

Random Position: 26

Savage Garden - I Want You '98 (peaked at #11 in 1997 and #12 with the 1998 re-release)

My goodness, this is pure nostalgia for me. I think it's the chic-a-cherry cola in particular... I assume that the 98 version was a rerelease of the same recording, rather than anything substantially different.

Not familiar with these last 2 songs and not sure I care to be based on the artists :kink: 'Get Down On It' is a tune though.
Used to LOVE Savage Garden! 'I Want You' and 'To The Moon & Back' are particular favourites but their second album is also brilliant

Get Down On It is decent though not especially my thing.

Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye is a dirge of a cover. That’s the Turkish Delight of this advent calendar so far for me.

I Want You is great though. Savage Garden were brilliant for a bit, until they weren’t. ;)

'I Want You 98' is great. The many times my mum plays their album in the car

I don't think SG have barely any bad songs either. 'Truly Madly Deeply' is fairly overrated in comparison though but I still like that too.

'Get Down On It' is a funky classic too.

They only stopped being brilliant when they split up tbh,
