I was huge S Club 7 fan as a kid and didn't really give Steps the time of day, it's only until recently (last few years) that I've realised that Steps have a much stronger back catalogue and definitely the have edge over S Club.

What the Future Holds has been on repeat all weekend, can't wait to hear the album.

With me it's exactly the same, maybe it's because there is no competition for Steps anymore. Back then Steps were my least favorite of the five big European pop bands: S Club 7, Alcazar, A*Teens, ATC.

Steps never really made it in countries where English is a foreign language, while the other four mentioned pop acts had hits all over Europe and Asia. I still wonder why...

It seems that S Club 7 had more huge hits (Reach, Don't Stop Movin' Bring It All Back, Never Had A Dream Come True) than Steps, who only had Heartbeat/Tragedy pass half a million sales, even though they were at their peak in the singles sales boom of 1997-2000.

But I suppose this was counteracted by the huge album sales they had, which were way higher than S Club 7's, so a lot of their hits are well known despite the modest sales.

I too preferred S Club 7 when I was younger, but far prefer Steps now, their last two tours have both been 100 times better than S Club 7's 2015 reunion tour and they've adapted really well to the current music scene, without losing what made them sound like Steps in the first place.

Steps have the much more solid discography as well as ability to perform nowadays, although S Club might have more 'standout' hits that are remembered widely e.g. S Club Party, Reach, Don't Stop Movin vs just Tragedy & 5678
S club did have a couple of big hits that are remembered but I think Steps overall had more consistent good singles which helped them sell albums in big numbers plus they released really solid albums that had good songs outside the singles and I think this is where s club fell short.

I'd give anything for the Big 5 to be back. We were so blessed.

I’d argue that One for sorrow joins those ranks also that s club party isn’t on the same level as the other songs mentioned from both acts.

I like One for Sorrow, but is it really that well-remembered by the general public as a signture song?

Whereas S Club Party I would say is S Club's second best known one behind Don't Stop Movin. People might not remember the exact title but everyone of a certain age remembers the members introducing themselves bit and there ain't no party like an S Club party hook.

i’d say it is well known - behind tragedy, it’s the choreo that the locals know the most at their tours.

I’d say Last Thing On My. One is relatively well known. It’s kinds of well known in Australia. It was a top 10 hit here.

Off topic. When was the last Steps singles or discography rate?

It's so weird that during Steps' peak... you wouldn't have even mentioned '5,6,7,8' but as they became the legacy band... that's the one their probably most known for besides 'Tragedy'. Bizarre.
I disagree, I think "5,6,7,8" has always been one of their most well known songs. At their peak they might have wanted to ignore it as it was a novelty song, but I think it's always been one of their top songs.

I just feel like during their height of fame... people cared more about 'One For Sorrow', 'Deeper Shade of Blue' and 'Stomp'. I'd say all 3 have been reduced to the "I forgot Steps did this" category now.

Definitely not 'One For Sorrow', the other two probably yes amongst the wider public.

This.

'One for Sorrow' is definitely one that my Mum — and likely people who were already adults when Steps were at their peak — remembers.

This year I myself actually really came to appreciate Stomp, which fits in quite nicely with a lot of the disco throwback songs around this year.

At the time it wasnt a fave for me.

I have always loved stomp, its one of my faves from them and was always surprised how overlooked it is by many fans, its not that its an unpopular song but its more overlooked in favour of others.
