Biography

 

The way Lil Nas X tells it, it sounds simple, almost mystical. “I was just kinda bored,” he told Apple Music. “I wanted to put something up. So that’s what I did.” Not only did the “it” in question—“Old Town Road”—become a global phenomenon (and 2019 Apple Music Award winner for Song of the Year), it prompted surprisingly pertinent conversations about how we define and classify music. Was it country? Was it rap? Cowboy anthem or LGBTQ camp? TikTok novelty or legitimate pop song?

 

It was, of course, all those things, and pity those who couldn’t live with the contradictions. Born Montero Lamar Hill in 1999, Nas grew up outside Atlanta but came of age on the internet, turning to social media and meme-making out of boredom and teenage loneliness—feelings compounded by his struggle to resolve his sexuality. This was top 100 until this week so unlucky to miss out! Pretty great song, I prefer it to INDUSTRY BABY (but not MONTERO!)

Glimpse of Us was easily one of the biggest songs of the year, ofc not bland enough to have high sales in the UK

 

I'll be tuning in for this, I know there's at least a few interesting entries on here, even if I'll also require a good number of coffee breaks throughout the afternoon x

 

not huge on That's What I Want, I did prefer the previous two singles, but as far as Gen-Z pop goes it's rather decent

Decent track from him, shame Xmas shoved it out at the last second. He's rather decent at these sorts of songs, but not very good as "pure rap" or "pure pop".

I quite liked 'Not Over Yet'.

After the dissolution of their first group, a mod outfit called Graduate, in 1981, childhood friends Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal (along with keyboardist Ian Stanley) set out to form England’s next big synth band. But while they were aiming for Duran Duran, they ended up with “Mad World," a darkly relatable song that offered an early sign that Tears for Fears were more contemplative than the boilerplate New Wave band. After all, they took their name from Arthur Janov's book on primal therapy and imbued their lyrics with many of his ideas, like the lines concerning dreams about dying on 'Mad World.'" Their 1983 debut album, The Hurting, earned them a lot of success in the UK, but it was their 1985 follow-up LP, Songs from the Big Chair, that introduced their sobering pop to the world. First, there was the brash “Shout,” which paired synths with a catchy chorus, metal guitars, and a rumination on political protest, and then the plaintive sing-along hit “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” which tapped into Cold War anxiety. Four years later, they returned with a soulful, Beatles-esque sound for 1989’s The Seeds of Love, featuring "Sowing the Seeds of Love," the band’s reaction against Thatcherism and most overtly political single to date. Smith left the band shortly thereafter, but Orzabal persevered, releasing Elemental in 1993, buoyed by the pop-rock anthem “Break It Down Again,” and 1995’s Raoul and the Kings of Spain. After Gary Jules’ cover of “Mad World” was featured in 2001’s Donnie Darko, Smith and Orzabal reunited for 2004’s aptly titled Everybody Loves a Happy Ending. - Apple Music

can't complain with Tears for Fears making the EOY list really, as one of the big 80s classics TikTok certainly could have (and did) chosen worse songs to revive!

Oh what a sublime start to the top 100 :wub: as an 80s synth obsessive it brings me great joy that this has transcended generations.
