Coldplay frontman Chris Martin once joked that the two biggest challenges in his life were trying to follow Radiohead and trying to follow Brad Pitt. The Pitt reference was personal, of course—Martin had been married to Pitt’s former fiancée Gwyneth Paltrow—but his self-assessment still felt remarkably apt: Coldplay isn’t just one of the most popular bands in the world, but also torchbearers for a kind of mainstream art-rock whose roots reach back through Radiohead, U2, Pink Floyd and even The Beatles. Biography

 

The mid-2000s saw no lack of garage-rockin’ skinny-jeaned upstarts vying to join The Strokes and The Libertines on the cover of the NME. But not only were Sheffield’s Arctic Monkeys able to whip up a media frenzy worthy of their heroes, they managed to thoroughly transcend it and become a rock institution unto themselves. Only 16 when he founded the band in 2002, singer/guitarist Alex Turner swiftly established himself as a songwriter of uncommon wisdom and wit, helping make the band’s scrappy 2006 salvo, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, the fastest-selling debut album in UK history. If that record suggested Turner was a natural inductee to the Ray Davies/Paul Weller/Damon Albarn school of British pub-rock philosophers, the Monkeys refused to settle for being a homegrown phenomenon and set their sights on global domination. By 2009’s Humbug, they were seeking riff-thickening advice from producer Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, while their 2013 blockbuster, AM, cracked the US Top 10 with the sort of sing-along stompers (“Do I Wanna Know?”, “R U Mine”) naturally suited to the festivals they routinely headlined. Bradley Cooper

Actor Bradley Cooper, star of numerous Hollywood blockbusters, was revealed to be a talented singer and musician when he played hard-drinking country-rocker Jackson Maine opposite Lady Gaga in the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born, his directorial debut. Born in 1975 in Philadelphia, Cooper decided at a young age to become an actor. After graduating from Georgetown with a BA in English, he earned a master's in acting at the Actors Studio Drama School in New York City. His first TV appearance came in 1999 with a guest role on Sex and the City, and his cinematic debut in 2001's Wet Hot American Summer. He became better known with his recurring role as journalist Will Tippin on J.J. Abrams' popular espionage series Alias. Increasingly substantial film roles followed before his breakthrough performance in the R-rated comedy The Hangover, which spawned two sequels. Popular with audiences for his rugged good looks and warm, down-to-earth personality, he made the leap to leading man status with the sci-fi thriller Limitless, and solidified his reputation with films such as The Place Beyond the Pines, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, Serena, and American Sniper. He became one of a select few actors to be nominated for an Academy Award in for three consecutive years. Cooper made his directorial debut in 2018 with A Star Is Born, the second remake of the 1937 film. In the movie, which also featured Lady Gaga, he played hard-drinking country-rocker Jackson Maine. Cooper modeled the character's voice on Sam Elliott, and his mannerisms on Eddie Vedder. Some call the end of summer the “slow news season”—school's still out, holidays are in full swing, and headlines tend to get weird—and Doja Cat (born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini in 1995) knew just what to do about it. George Ezra’s spirited folk-pop sing-alongs could have thrived in any era, but their mix of worldly curiosity, unbridled optimism and a few playful loops and synths reflects a truly millennial ideal. Born George Ezra Barnett in Hertfordshire, England in 1993, the singer/songwriter grew up seeking comfort in the wordplay of folk laureates like Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie and the raw, emotional resonance of blues masters like Lead Belly. He trained his voice to sound as bold and booming as the latter, and honed his writing chops while travelling—an activity he’d been fascinated with since falling in love with Paddington Bear as a kid. Biography

 

Oasis were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1991. Developed from an earlier group, the Rain, the band originally consisted of Liam Gallagher (lead vocals, tambourine), Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs (guitar), Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan (bass guitar) and Tony McCarroll (drums). Upon returning to Manchester, Liam's older brother, Noel Gallagher (lead guitar, vocals) joined as a fifth member, which formed the band's core and settled line-up. During the course of their existence, they had various line-up changes, though the Gallagher brothers remained as the staple members until the group's demise.

 

Oasis signed to independent record label Creation Records in 1993 and released their record-setting debut album Definitely Maybe (1994). The following year the band recorded (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995) with drummer Alan White, in the midst of a chart rivalry with Britpop peers Blur. (What's the Story) Morning Glory? became one of the best-selling albums of all time, selling over 22 million copies worldwide, and the Gallagher brothers were featured regularly in tabloid newspapers for their sibling disputes and wild lifestyles. In 1996, Oasis performed two nights at Knebworth for an audience of 125,000 each night, which were at the time the largest outdoor concerts in UK history. 2.5 million people applied for tickets, which remains the highest demand for a show in British history. In 1997, Oasis released their third album, Be Here Now (1997); although it was the fastest-selling album in UK chart history, and went on to sell 8 million copies, its popularity tapered off quickly.

 

McGuigan and Arthurs left Oasis in 1999 as the band released Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000). They were replaced by former Heavy Stereo guitarist/frontman Gem Archer and former Ride guitarist/frontman Andy Bell. Their fifth studio album Heathen Chemistry was released in 2002. In 2004, White left, leaving them as a four-piece, with the addition of the Who drummer Zak Starkey as an unofficial recording and touring fifth member. They found renewed success and popularity with Don't Believe the Truth (2005). Following the recording of the band's seventh album Dig Out Your Soul in May 2008, Starkey departed from the band. Chris Sharrock was recruited as a touring member, and Oasis did their last tour as a collective band. During the tour the Gallagher brothers' deteriorating relationship led to Noel Gallagher announcing his departure in August 2009, after a backstage altercation with Liam. The rest of the band, led by Liam, decided to continue, under the name Beady Eye, until their breakup in 2014. Noel formed a solo project, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. Following the breakup of Beady Eye, Liam began a solo career, Bell reunited with former band Ride, while Archer and Sharrock became members of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

 

Oasis have had eight UK number-one singles and eight UK number-one albums. They have won 17 NME Awards, nine Q Awards, four MTV Europe Music Awards and six Brit Awards, including one in 2007 for Outstanding Contribution to Music and one for the Best Album of the Last 30 Years–for (What's the Story) Morning Glory?–as voted by BBC Radio 2 listeners; (What's the Story) Morning Glory? is also the fifth best-selling album in UK chart history, and was the UK's biggest-selling album of the 1990s. They have been nominated for two Grammy Awards. As of 2009, Oasis have sold over 75 million records worldwide. The band were listed in the Guinness World Records book in 2010 for "Longest Top 10 UK Chart Run by a Group" after an unprecedented run of 22 top 10 hits in the UK. “We are on a wave/Take over the place,” Bru-C raps on his 2019 single “You & I”, and while he’s ostensibly speaking to a new love, he could very well have been talking about himself and his producer Simula. After his scene-stealing appearance on Skepsis’ “Hold It Down” made him a leading voice in the UK’s jacked-up bassline scene, “You & I” pushed the Nottingham MC (born Josh Bruce in 1991) further overground, by hitching his deep, authoritative voice to a fleet-footed drum ‘n’ bass track that became his first breakthrough hit (and also helped him establish his own clubwear line, Krudd).
