Singer Brenda Lee was one of the first country artists to cross over to pop audiences, and she was the highest-charting female artist of the 1960s. At nine years old, Lee joined the cast of the TV show Ozark Jubilee after impressing host Red Foley with her rendition of “Jambalaya.” Her first hit, “One Step At A Time,” released when she was 12, peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard Country chart and No. 43 on the Hot 100. Lee’s most famous single, 1958’s “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree,” initially only sold 5,000 copies, but by 1978 it had sold 5 million and continues to be one of the most-played holiday songs. From 1958 to 1962, she had 10 consecutive Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100—a record for a female solo artist that she held for more than 20 years. The 1960 hit “I’m Sorry” earned Lee her first of four Grammy nominations, and and she was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. At the height of the fever dream that was Elton John’s life in the ’70s, the singer-songwriter had the optician Dennis Roberts design a pair of giant, sculptural glasses studded with 57 battery-powered lights in the shape of the name Elton—to the tune of about $5,000. The excess was always apparent: the rhinestones, the costumery, the old Hollywood glamour retrofitted for a new, gender-bending world. But beneath the feathers, John’s music—written with the lyricist Bernie Taupin—was direct and unpretentious, the kind of rock ’n’ roll storytelling that met you where you were. Born Reginald Dwight in Pinner, England, in 1947, John took to the piano young, studying on a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music while obsessively listening to Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. They were so physical, John marvelled—they didn’t just play the piano, they beat it. He started playing in pubs at 15 and, around 20, met Taupin through a want ad in a music magazine.

I think this maybe comes down to one particular Spotify playlist that only has pre-1980 songs on it, guessing it was more prominently pushed to people this year? (But then Kelly Clarkson got new peaks as well so it's not only the oldies doing better than ever)
