I mean her only real threat to no. 1 is Ellie Goulding who's last album only sold 14K first week and had top 40 hits behind it. This time she has no charting singles from the album. Maybe i'm too hopeful but i'd love her to do it.

I agree, Would definitely love to see her get a #1 album aswell.

I'll be astonished if Raye is NOT no.1 in the albums chart - so much momentum behind her at the moment.
I can't imagine an Ellie Goulding album in 2023 being particularly big in pure sales either, so if that's her main competition she has a good shot.

So pleased to see Raye finally claiming the No1 spot and SZA looking to claim No2. Both brilliant tunes and it’s a great success story for Raye, much deserved.

Also amazing to see Gaga claiming another top 20, I was worried the Christmas deadweight would prevent the song having a decent peak so glad it’s managed to climb up that far. Crazy that it’s going to peak higher than MTN and Y&I especially given it’s only now been made a single, nearly 12 years after the album release.

Thank god for RAYE, or the No.1 sales would have been particularly dire.

I hope Sam stays top five in the albums although I thought his sales would be higher. You'd have thought millions of viewers + a fantastic performance + a new deluxe release would have at least increased his sales by 50%.

Still, four weeks in the top ten is three more than I thought it would get.

Performance wasn't great. Mel C saved it!!! Vocals were a tad waspy and ropey. Not surprised it didn't boost ha so much.

Looking at Ticketmaster, there are still tickets available for all his shows currently - although most are at “limited availability”.

According to Ticketmaster most of Peter Kay's tour dates have limited availability but good luck actually getting any tickets unless you're on your own andd don't mind sitting at the very back.

I'm not really convinced that RAYE is that likely to challenge for the #1 album - yes 'Escapism.' is a huge hit and generating some goodwill regarding her label situation etc. (although even that I'm not sure if it's been noticed by the wider public or just confined to particular online communities), but that won't necessarily translate into people caring to stream/buy a whole album. Of course no reference point to compare it to as she hasn't released an album before though so it's kind of anyone's guess. I could realistically see it doing anything from only shifting a few thousand to being #1 pretty comfortably. At the moment though I'd lean towards thinking Ellie would probably beat her.

I really don't like that P!nk song at all but part of me is rooting for it to go top 40 just to keep extending her impressively lengthy chart discography even deeper into the streaming era (and with a solo song this time).

That’s true, although even at the back of the London Apollo (where Sam is) you still have a decent view!

Didn't know Shania was releasing that day too - yeah I imagine she'll still be able to bring in some decent numbers.

Agree, I think she’d still have a decent enough sized fan base.

I think you're over-estimating Raye in albums and underestimating Ellie.

Ellie doesn't have playlist support anymore of any kind, radio or streaming, so of course she's a flop in singles

but I'd say she still has the hardcore fanbase to buy albums and even multi-buy vinyl variants.

Raye has 1 song going viral on tiktok, which usually doesn't translate in any interest beyond that song in particular (sadly)

COME ON RAYEEEE YOU WILL SLAY AND PROVE THESE HATERZ WRONG X

Please for all that is (UN)HOLY do not let Sam Smith get #1 for 1 week let alone 2 weeks!

A few artists had their own shows singing their own music over Christmas and didn't get a lot of gain album sales-wise. Sam sang lots of enthuasistic karaoke, wanted the audience to have a good time and wasn't faking his enjoyment. His goal was to entertain people and that is what he did. The songs that he performed did get sales and streams boost but most people won't know he has got an album  It's not surprising when a lot of people hadn't heard his Eurovision song until 9:57pm on 14/05/2022

By the way Ratings UK reported AR SAM entertained 5.53 million people on NYE (38.4%) which increased to 6.71 (50.9%) after the fireworks.

Jools entertained 2.64 million.

To compare with 2021 Olly Alexander was ~4 million iirc.

It was a far higher profile show than many of the other artists had over Christmas, and his covers were brilliant and felt much bigger than karaoke.

My point though was more indicative of the market change in general, which I'm still surprised at the collapse of. In the past a huge TV performance like that pulling in millions of viewers would lead people to seek out an album in the shops (even if one wasn't expressly mentioned by the artist - like The Corrs' Talk On Corners after their Royal Albert Hall gig was screened), and a major sales boost usually followed. It's great that he got a sales and streams boost for some of his tracks, it's just a surprise to me that more weren't motivated to check if he had an album - as he did sing four songs from it during the show.

Many people hadn't heard of him eight months ago, but any BBC viewer surely has by now with the amount he's been promoted this year across various shows.

But times and buying habits have changed, I just continue to be surprised by how much. No artist ever seems to get much of an album boost anymore after a big TV performance, which I continue to find odd, as it's such great promotion. He's absolutely fantastic, the album is a brilliant debut, so while he's done impressively, he deserves even more, especially on streaming.

I'm happy for the man but "WHO IS SAM RYDER?" and "HE ONLY KNOWS HOW TO SING THAT SPACE MAN SONG" remain common tehehehehe
