29. The Fratellis - Chelsea Dagger 262pts

Writer - Jon Fratelli

Top points - jez1982 24, Mack 24, jimwatts 21

This was the highest charting single for the Scottish band. The song has been adopted by many football teams for goal celebrations including Celtic and Juventus. It's also been used in hockey, rugby union and darts.

I think in the next semi I'll support the indie squad more, it's a shame that so many fall just so short.

28. Opus III - It's A Fine Day 268pts

Writer - Edward Barton

Top points - Jade 25, perrobueno 25, Dot's a liar 25

It's A Fine Day was an acapella single by Jane, girlfriend of the writer Edward Barton, released in 1983. This cover from nine years later was sung by Kirsty Hawkshaw and omitted some of the lyrics from the original. It was the only top 40 hit for the English group.

Omg I didn't lose that much, but lost my #1, 2 and 4! I LOVE 'It's a Fine Day', huge shame to see it go.

27. Donna Lewis - I Love You Always Forever 271pts

Writer - Donna Lewis

Top points - Torple 25, Campbell 25, xajnipi 23, Roba 23

This song was inspired by the novel 'Love For Lydia' by H E Bates with the two lines "I love you always forever, near and far closer together", being quoted from the book. In the US, it spent nine weeks at number 2 behind 'Macarena'. The Welsh singer's follow-up single only reached number 39 and she had no further hits.

Keeping everything crossed that Katy On A Mission and Blind Faith are both not at #26...

26. Basement Jaxx - Red Alert 273pts

Writers - Felix Buxton, Simon Radcliffe

Top points - chrissmith276 24, Jade 23, Daan 21

This was Basement Jaxx's third single and the first of their five top 10 hits. The vocals were by Blu James. It misses the final by just one point. The single in 25th place finished with 274 points and Red Alert would have won the tie-break.

So these are the 25 singles to qualify for the final, in chronological order:

Daydream Believer

Babooshka

Rapture

Hungry Like The Wolf

Self Control

How Will I Know

Sowing The Seeds Of Love

Enter Sandman

Around The World

Strong Enough

You Get What You Give

(You Drive Me) Crazy

Waiting For Tonight

Try Again

I'm Like A Bird

Bohemian Like You

My Happy Ending

Who Knew

Fluorescent Adolescent

Sexy! No No No...

Up

Acapella

Katy On A Mission

Blind Faith

Jealousy

Ouch at my top three--Macarthur Park, Chelsea Dagger and the Boy Does Nothing--failing at the final hurdle (-ish). Still, my number four--Babooshka--has gone through! This has been fun!
Carnage. While quite a few of my top votes went out very early, it looked like my remaining faves might make it... until they almost all got wiped out in the 34-26 section. Not too fussed about most of what's left, hope the second semi is more successful!

The Fratellis and The Manics, shame to see another two indie anthems just miss out. The Manics really were huge around then, their big comeback since the disappearance of Richey, and 'Everything Must Go' and its followup 'This Is My Truth...' are two of the best indie albums of the 90s.

'I Love You Always Forever' was cute at the time but I don't really hear it much now. Saying that, hasn't a new remix of it just been released?

Shame 'Red Alert' also missed out, I'd say that's one of the defining dance hits of the decade. Coincidentally it was also today's Heardle 90s answer (which I got with no skips, natch).

Buck Rogers was my biggest loss, some great memories there and an epic song, but I'm quite surprised it did as well as it did. Chelsea Dagger is another really fun indie anthem that even my mum's approval didn't sour :kink: Hooray for most of my other big favourites making it though!

Aww no at 'Red Alert' and 'It's A Fine Day' falling just short D: (the latter was only a fairly recent discovery for me but an instant chill classic). 'Chelsea Dagger' is also a great tune.

Well my top 4 and 8 of my top 10 got through (with the two I lost both being out fairly early!), not too bad.

love love love Opus III-It's a fine day <3

also love Everything Must Go

I voted for hardly any of the final 25, so should be easy to whittle those down for the final.

Disappointing results.

Everything Must Go robbed, one of the best songs by a great band! :( Red Alert was also in my votes, although fairly low. A disappointing end to the results for me, with my entire top seven in this round missing out on the final. A small consolation, however, is that all of the next six below that did go through, so it could have been worse and there are still plenty of good songs to vote for in the final.
Theres something wrong about these results. The most 'recent' song that got through is from 2011. <_<
