It definitely lacked the energy that's in the studio version, it was really lacking stage presence but hopefully it comes across better 2m night.

I watched SF2 last night and I have to say Mae Muller sounded s**te and the performance was lacklustre. HOW did this song/artist EVER get chosen? She's not a natural performer.

I hope she does well, but honestly, I was embarrassed; compared to other similar-sounding songs, this one lacked backing vocals, energy, and polish. After Sam last year, this feels like a huge step back.

Now we have all the qualifiers this is unfortunately almost locked in for bottom 5 unless something drastic happens to improve it.
With the amount of female pop bops that have stalled low top 20 or even bottom few, I am really hesitant to expect this to be much higher than like 19th and to be honest that feels optimistic! We’ve got a great song, but the vocals aren’t great, the performance is decent but doesn’t pop as much as it could, it is a weaker year than some I think but I just don’t think that’s enough. Mae is such a fun person so I’m rooting for her and she has a lot of goodwill from the fans, but there’s 100 million people across the world watching and I just don’t see that the average person sitting in like Moldova or Italy going for this in their droves. I’m thinking bottom 5 too sadly.

Listening to all the songs in the final this certainly doesn’t deserve a bottom 5 placing that many are predicting :nocheer:

I agree though Will Europe love it enough to pick up the phone, I’m sure there will be some goodwill votes as the host country on behalf of Ukraine but obviously I wouldn’t want to rely on host country votes to get her up the leaderboard.

That clip they showed did seem very weak. The energy just wasn’t there and the da dadadada dai bit didn’t feel elevated enough. Hopefully the full performance is better (will watch later), but that has lowered my expectations for how we will do.

I was shocked that she sings the dadada bit live. She should be using the chorus to catch her breath and do choreo!

I think up until the last few days I had expected Mae to PERFORM the song. You can have poor vocals if you put on a good show, or vice versa, but Mae does neither. The song is definitely good enough, but without either of those on her side it's not looking great.

Comments I've been hearing about the rehearsal clip last night...

OK Song. Bad staging. Bad performance.

This fills me with no hope. 😔 I like the staging, but the vocals are amongst the worst (not as *bad* as some, but just not standing out). Fully agree that she needs some backing vocalists (or pre-recorded ad-libs) to lift it. The song is a banger, but it doesn't seem to be punching on stage (where it absolutely should!)

Hard to predict, but I'm not optimistic at it making it out of the Bottom 5 anymore. 😔

Nicki French was at the Euroclub last night and mentioned that it will be 23 years to the day since she performed on Saturday. She said I hope Mae doesn’t come 16th like me, but I was thinking actually that wouldn’t be so terrible. Especially if you see it as 16th out of 37. :)

Also think that her live vocal of this bit sounds a bit... Snotty? Like she's got a cold... If that makes any sense? And I'm not sure why.

Her performance was I'm sorry to say giving Dua Lipa pre dance classes. The outfit ages her. The staging is Electro Velvet without the charm.

I think its a real shame as she is capable of better if she had a better arrangement.

I've said this since the first time she performed the song live and I'll keep saying it: she needs backing vocalists to pick up the slack at times. It's not like this is a song where it's all about her ~vocals~ either; it's meant to be a fun pop song performance so it's not something that I necessarily see as a bad thing / "cheating" either.

This song grows on me all the time and I can totally get on with singing along to it in the car... I thought the staging at the start was really good... but her vocals aren't it and it needs the backing vocals to help her along.

It would be rubbish for it to be broadcast from the UK and for us to do really badly.

I don’t mind the staging. It’s absolutely the vocals that are the problem. She just isn’t a good vocalist. I predict 23rd in the final.

Really disappointed that this is the reaction now. I agree btw. Just disappointed with the BBC for not fixing these issues, it would be fine with some backing vocals added in. She’s fine on the verses but the chorus sounds so flat.

We’ll only be getting points out of appreciation for hosting for Ukraine I feel.

This is exactly how I feel actually. I love the song, so much. It's such a shame that noone involved has decided to add something into the mix to elevate the chorus on stage.

I can already imagine people saying last year was just a fluke... When, in reality, it was down to the combination of effort and a great performance, we will have a 50% success rate with the contests we've actually put effort into, and no country gets it all right every time. People just refuse to listen/believe that (pre-2022) ZERO effort went into finding good songs/promoting them/staging them.

I've just read that the UK are on last, so doesn't that kind of keep us fresh in people's minds enough to score a few extra votes?

Didn't work for Molly, sadly.
