February 23, 20232 yr Surprised to see True Love sneak in, that didn’t feel very big at all. I guess the early 00s hits are at a big disadvantage sales-wise though. Feels really unfair to compare anything released in the last 10 years to anything from that time period. Walk Me Home too, I don’t know anyone who would think of that before Just Like a Pill for example! Edited February 23, 20232 yr by No Sleeep
February 23, 20232 yr That’d be the same with a lot of artists of the time. I’m sure Umbrella isn’t in Rihanna’s top 3 but wasn’t that #1 for ages? I guess that’s just the low sales climate of the time.
February 23, 20232 yr I really love What About Us. There’s just something about it that really connects for me so happy to see it has done so well
February 23, 20232 yr Seems odd that Get The Party Started isn't top 10, for a long time it felt like her signature hit but I guess it really isn't anywhere near that now. Which begs the question, what would people consider now to be her signature hit?
February 23, 20232 yr With this being another recycled article I may well have already said something similar to this about an earlier iteration of the list but this one definitely feels overly distorted to her streaming era hits - 'Who Knew', 'Just Like A Pill', 'Get The Party Started' and especially 'U + Ur Hand' all feel far too low, really seems quite off that 'Walk Me Home' is ahead of all of those, and the latter even being behind the likes of 'Anywhere Away From Here'. At least nice to see 'Get The Party Started' has re-overtaken 'Just Like Fire' since the last update I guess! 'What About Us' at least feels like it was a genuinely big enough hit to have earned a place near the top but it is one of my least favourite songs from her. Much prefer 'Beautiful Trauma' from that era. Agreed that they could/should have published a top 40 for her, it's weird to see someone with such a lengthy catalogue of hits getting the same treatment as S Club 7 who didn't even have 20 singles but hey ho. Interesting to see the 'Try This' era being labelled as 'commercial doldrums', by today's standards a #3 album with singles peaking at #7, #11 and #21 would be pretty good almost regardless of any context. But I guess it was a fairly big downgrade for her at the time (and telling that it is behind 'Beautiful Trauma' on her best selling albums list).
February 23, 20232 yr Which begs the question, what would people consider now to be her signature hit? I'd probably say 'So What' but 'Just Give Me A Reason' is a fair shout too. (JGMAR is pretty far ahead as her most streamed song on Spotify tbf)
February 23, 20232 yr Try This was a commercial comedown from M!ssundaztood-most things would have been. With it being only her third album, it could easily have gone that she would continue on a downward trajectory and she herself wasn’t really feeling that era. I’m Not Dead was a pretty big reversal of fortune for her and even that got off to a pretty slow start off the back of this, particularly in the US.
February 23, 20232 yr I'd probably say 'So What' but 'Just Give Me A Reason' is a fair shout too. (JGMAR is pretty far ahead as her most streamed song on Spotify tbf) I'd agree with those. Radio still hammer so many of her songs, from different periods of her career. These two in particular but also Just Like A Pill, What About Us, Get The Party Started and Who Knew.
February 24, 20232 yr Yeah her early career was actually pretty spiky Can’t Take Me Home (#13, 2000) - 470k M!ssundaztood (#2, 2001) - 1.88m Try This (#3, 2003) - 554k I'm Not Dead (#3, 2006) - 1.43m Funhouse (#1, 2008) - 1.35m Try This’s sales are from February 2019 and it still hasn’t gone 2x platinum so not a great catalogue seller, it definitely stands out as a lull in her discography but she’s never truly flopped here. Can’t Take Me Home did pretty well all things considered but is obviously overshadowed by everything that came after I think I overestimate how big Trouble and God Is a DJ were, probably due to how much they’ve been used in the media (Mean Girls!). Here they did alright but in the US the singles definitely flopped, only Trouble scraped in at #68 which was pretty unimaginable after Missundaztood
February 24, 20232 yr I always felt like Funhouse was a much bigger era than I’m Not Dead so I’m interested to see it at number 3. I guess IND just sold more consistently in smaller amounts.
February 24, 20232 yr Quick everyone stream that impeccable run of singles (and the rest of the album)
February 24, 20232 yr I always felt like Funhouse was a much bigger era than I’m Not Dead so I’m interested to see it at number 3. I guess IND just sold more consistently in smaller amounts. Also worth noting that albums sales were very much at a peak overall in 2006 even if they hadn’t slumped loads by 2008/9. I’m Not Dead and Funhouse we’re both the ninth best selling albums of 2006 and 2008 but the former had much higher sales.
