Busted's Official Top 10 biggest songs revealed

22 March 2023 | By Carl Smith

Dust off the old school tie and obscenely-baggy jeans and get practicing that iconic air guitar jump, because Busted are back.

Set to celebrate over 20 years in music, Charlie Simpson, James Bourne and Matt Willis have teased an exciting new announcement coming this week. And, while they're remained tight-lipped on exactly what said announcement entails, speculation of a reunion tour is rife.

So, ahead of the big reveal, we thought we'd better update Busted's Official biggest songs in the UK ever; from debut single What I Go to School For to their Thunderbirds theme and everything in between.

But, before we get to the full Top 10, let's take a closer look at the band's three biggest singles to date.

3. Crashed the Wedding

Released: 2003

Official Chart peak: 1

Total UK chart units: 441,000

The group's second UK Number 1 single - and the lead track from second studio album A Present for Everyone - Crashed The Wedding boasts over 26 million streams in the UK to date.

Also, the music video gifted us Matt Willis in a wedding dress. For that, we're forever grateful.

2. What I Go to School For

Released: 2002

Official Chart peak: 3

Total chart units: 493,000

Busted's debut single - the Number 3-peaking What I Go to School For - has racked up over 29 million streams in the UK to date.

Anyone know what Miss Mackenzie's up to these days?

1. Year 3000

Released: 2003

Official Chart peak: 2

Total UK chart units: 1,001,000

Oh, of course. Reigning supreme as Busted's biggest UK single so far, Year 3000's accumulated over 1 million UK chart units to date. It's also the group's most-streamed single by quite a stretch, with in excess of 80 million UK streams to its name.

We'll allow you to fight amongst yourselves as to whose version's superior - the boys' or Jonas Brothers'...

Top 10 in October 2015:

1 YEAR 3000 2 306,000

2 THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO 1 258,000

3 WHAT I GO TO SCHOOL FOR 3 230,000

4 CRASHED THE WEDDING 1

5 YOU SAID NO 1

6 AIR HOSTESS 2

7 SLEEPING WITH THE LIGHT ON 3

8 WHO'S DAVID 1

9 3AM 1

10 SHE WANTS TO BE ME N/A

'You Said No' dropping three places! Overtaken by 'Who's David' which I'm pretty sure was the lowest selling #1 of the 00s, selling just 73k in 2004. 'You Said No' sold 103k in 2003.

I imagine 'With A Little Help From My Friends by Sam & Mark (94k in 2004) is now the lowest selling #1 of the 00s.

Surprised 'Air Hostess' hasn't managed to overtake 'Thunderbirds Are Go' yet, it went Silver in 2018 and would assume it's selling much more on a weekly basis.

Love every song in that top 10  though I wish 3AM was higher up!

Can anyone confirm for definite that 'Who's David' was the lowest selling #1 of the 00s? Such a shame if so, that's always been one of my faves!

I've had a check and 'Wonderful' by Ja Rule (also from 2004) sold a lower amount (65k). U2's 'Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own' sold less than 'Who's David' too (71k in 2005) and then there were the three Elvis re-issues (selling 40k-44k in 2005) but it's debatable as to whether they should be considered.

The implication that anyone could prefer Jonas Brothers' version of 'Year 3000' is offensive

Yas at that creeping over the million mark anyway *.*

Why do Busted only get a top 10 if S Club 7 got a top 20 though. Grumble grumble. x

Add me to the 'shocked Who's David? has overtaken You Said No camp! I'm not complaining, as I always felt Who's David? was incredibly overrated... All their singles are bangers though!

(Definitely think it feels more mature than most of their singles [maybe barring Sleeping With the Light On/3AM], so maybe their fanbase appreciate it more now?)

I imagine 'With A Little Help From My Friends by Sam & Mark (94k in 2004) is now the lowest selling #1 of the 00s.
Do you think McFly's 'Baby's Coming Back / Transylvania' (51k in 2007) has overtaken it?

I’m guessing the double A side now wouldn’t exist in the OCC database and the tracks would be separated, with all the earlier sales going to Baby’s Coming Back? But I don’t know whether BCB would be over 94k with streams.

I'm glad 'Who's David' never held that record then, it didn't deserve to! I'm in that very small minority who think 'Who's David' > 'You Said No', so I'm not complaining it's overtaken :D

I always knew 'You Said No' as 'Crash And Burn' (that's even how its title appears on the album), they only changed the title for the single release because the original title was deemed inappropriate in light of the Columbia Shuttle disaster. I've always thought 'You Said No' made such an odd song title!

I’ve always had a soft spot for Who’s David too although the lyrics are pretty rubbish, especially the last 2 lines of the chorus:

“Somebody saw you sleep around the town…” - you can’t see someone sleeping around, unless they’re doing it publicly. And why would only 1 person see it?

“… and I’ve got proof because the word’s going around” - no gossip is definitely not proof! :P

Yeah I know what you mean, I've always found the lyrics a bit questionable too (and don't even get me started on 'Year 3000' and the whole great-great-great-granddaughter nonsense ) - but then again, lyrics don't always have to make sense, and there's plenty of other examples!

Yeah that's right, 'Baby's Coming Back' will get all the original sales of the double A side as well as any sales for the song itself, whilst the total for 'Transylvania' will start from scratch. Just looking at the Spotify streams, 'Baby's Coming Back' has 294k streams and 'Transylvania' has 6.9m, so I think it's safe to say the total for 'Baby's Coming Back / Transylvania' hasn't increased that much from the 51k it sold in 2007. I wonder if 'Transylvania' was the song that got allocated the sales of the double A side then it would have a total big enough to shake the "lowest selling #1" title.

Yeah. That's because their label made them change the lyrics as it wouldn't be appropriate for the young audience they were marketed at...

I'm pretty sure when I saw them live a few years back they sung the correct lyrics:

"You're just a whore, who sleeps around the town, and I've got proof because the word's going around" (makes much more sense - though word going around still isn't proof 😂)

I see. What a horrid lyric - I prefer the non-sensical version in that case!

I hope so because 'Transylvania' is an absolute tune!
