Movie songs tend to do well after they have been attached to the movie and a particular scene, not before. That's why I think Dua's single will underperform by her standards: the movie premiere is still almost two months away and there will probably be other songs that are being played in important scenes. I just cannot see DTN having such a staying power that it'll suddenly fly up on the charts in late July.

I think it has more to do with the song being another Sweetest Pie than being another Levitating

thinking about old movies, I cannot link any song to a particular scene in the movie

when is My Heart Will Go On played on Titanic? No clue! When they are on the water and there is only place for her?

some songs are also only in the credits but not on the main movie

I think Celine gets played during the credits but also possibly the song is sprinkled in the movie as a leitmotif. I will say though as I've been watching a lot more films than I used to in the past few years, it's been an interesting point of observation. A lot of the time, you'll get those big soundtrack hits and they just play during the credits, or pretty early on, but then on the flipside, you can get films that liberally put the song in all over the film, like "Sunflower" in "Spider-Verse", "Danger Zone" in "Top Gun", or "The Sound of Silence" in "The Graduate".

Apple:

2 Lil Durk

11 J Hus - Crazy

21 Kylie

46 Taylor - Hits different

49 Taylor - Karma ft Ice Spice

64 Dua - Barbie Song

65 Taylor - Snow More Lana

I don't get the rationale why film songs cannot do well? The biggest hits in history are all from movies (Love is all around, Everything I do, I will always love you...)... they just need (1) to be good and (2) nowadays to get playlist support. Dua doesn't fulfill any of the conditions tyhough...

The film isn’t out for 7 weeks so there’s still time!

Happy by Pharrell (another one of the biggest hits of all time somehow) didn't even chart on its release week, and that was a soundtrack song too.

People were predicting Dua to go to #1 on streaming… she’s not even Top 60 on AM yet *.*

Not heard the song yet TBF, off to give it a listen now.

I will never understand why people predict songs to do well and be a #1 even without hearing the actual song ....like, it makes no sense. Unless they are maybe Adele or Taylor but even then no one is guaranteed a hit based on name power alone.
A lot of Dua's fans were complaining that the song is hard to find on Apple Music so maybe it will have a better start on Spotify

I think i saw people saying it’s only listed under the Barbie soundtrack rather than Dua?

but Dua Lipa is up there with the biggest. We are not talking Ava Max/Zara Larson/Mabel.

Yet Dua hasn't once debuted at #1? I don't think a soundtrack single would be the one to change that, perhaps her next lead is more likely.

Not to say that she was on the level of Ed Sheeran but she has 2 #1 albums with the first of those spending 42 weeks in the top 10, you have ridiculous standards if that doesn't count as 'big album success'. And 8/13 of her top 10 singles were completely solo so 'mostly collab success' is just factually wrong. Her international success certainly was nowhere near her UK success granted but would hardly call this 'no international success'.

Thanks for giving me another chance to guffaw at 'Silly Me'

Hits Different highest debut on Spotify at #3 with 309,752 streams!

Karma remix and Snow on the Beach ft more Lana are at #7 and #8 respectively.

Not too shabby :cheer:

Think Karma might be #1 when combined with the original. Hopefully it holds enough to go Top 10 officially. The remix will fall hard over the course of the week as people will realise how awful it is and never revisit it

wow thats crazy for Taylor, #3, 7 & 8 with minimal playlist support

Taylor is #1,2 & 4 in the US with Karma at #1
