May 31, 20232 yr I think Say Something was experimental in terms of its structure, towards the end of the song. Verse 1 straight into the chorus, then Verse 2 straight into the chorus (there's no pre-choruses). The second chorus is followed by a middle 8*, which then explodes into an extended outro which incorporates the middle 8 and elements of the chorus, which is a burst of euphoria that really takes the song up to another level. I think that in itself makes it veer away from safe, because the structure isn't standard at this point - it could have just gone back to the chorus again. Say Something isn't strongly disco but there's subtle elements of it. I think the use of the funk guitar is the main disco-y element to it. As a whole though I think it's one of the least overtly disco songs on the album, so in a way it was an interesting choice to launch an era with a Disco theme. They could have decided to be more on the nose in their approach. I like its placement on the album though. 'Disco' becomes very frenetic with Monday Blues followed by Supernova, so I feel that Say Something provides a much needed tempo change. * Some people would define this as a bridge

I think in a rate like this up against so many big hits and classics it was always going to struggle from mid table at best for most people.
