I don't know and I agree it was a dumb decision. Also I believe they didn't see any significant decrease in the average age of their listener afterwards so it didn't even work. I suspect behind the scenes the authorities or some organisation like Ofcom was criticising them so Radio 1 just wanted to do something so they could say "See, we're taking action".

I was a teenager in the 00's and the Kylie and Madonna hit songs for example were just like any other hit song among my peers, I never saw anybody refuse them because they were around in the 80's. A lot of guys did refuse to listen to pop music in general, but that was a genre issue, not an age issue, they wouldn't be caught dead listening to Kelly Clarkson or Natasha Bedingfield either. So I knew even at the time it wasn't going to make much of a difference.

I think the issue overall back then (and now) is that young people just don’t listen to the radio anymore. So while their average audience grew older, the average radio audience overall was surely aging so it’s not like it’s all because they played Kylie and Madonna (and let’s face it, female artists were the ones who suffered the most from this change). But they’ve really dug their heels in haven’t they?

This the reaction to her not getting a first look play

Please radio 1 don't play her on Friday

I skipped past a lot of this thread, but just came here to say how amazing it is to see Kylie at #6 in 2023! Even if she misses the top 10 come Friday, which I imagine she probably will, a top 20 position is still an incredible achievement for her.
Still possible for Kylie to drop an Extended Mix EP but I think they still getting Padam Padam settled onto playlists before those remixes etc come out.

Kylie fans were annoyed that Padam Padam didn't get played on Radio 1 last night.

Not a good week for Kylie fans on the BBC because this Friday night , BBC4 will be skipping an episode of Top of the Pops from November 1994, hosted by Kylie, because R Kelly appears during the chart rundown.

Radio 1 is extremely sexist and ageist. They seem to deem Elton John and other older men as ok to play, yet Kylie won’t get a look in despite it being a huge hit. as a public sector broadcaster this shouldn’t be tolerated. Women over 40 are not irrelevant!! I’m so pleased for both Kylie and madonna, proving radio 1 wrong!

That's ridiculous. You'd think they could have just edited the chart rundown part to remove R Kelly? Or better still, just play it as it is anyway instead of trying to pretend he didn't exist? I could understand it more if it was a whole performance of him rather than just a mention on the rundown.

I expect it's the situation where the chart from 40-11 scrolls over the R Kelly video, so it can't be easily skipped over without taking out the majority of the chart in this instance. A shame for the other acts who appeared on that episode.

Can I just point out how truly pathetic you are for only ever contributing something to be a troll and for the desire of causing ire for others. It's no way to go through life.

BBC Radio 2 is also public sector and takes care of giving airplay to established artists with decades of career.

but is there really a correlation between age of artist vs age of fans?

are Kylie fans all >55? are Madonna fans >60? I don't think so

and the other way around, are fans of Olivia Rodrigo only 16?

I don't think so

Exactly. It’s such a cop out to go “well, Radio 2 will play them…”. WHY won’t Radio 1 is the question we’re asking when people like Kylie and Madonna have a large number of younger fans and often collaborate with younger artists and writers. It’s just unfair to automatically exclude someone from a station based on age alone.

I don’t think a song like Padam Padam (or Living for Love for that matter) was made with Radio 2’s average audience in mind

This forum would be all pensionists otherwise :D
I was commenting that there is a public station playing these artists, but it's not R1. Also, R1 is not a sign of anything these days, its relevance as a hit-maker is long gone. It's just a BBC station targeted towards younger audience, that's all.

It just seems silly that they’d exclude something which clearly is popular with a younger audience on the assumption that it “shouldn’t” be.

They have explicitly stated before that Kylie “isn’t a Radio 1 artist” - why is there such a thing and how exactly do they define a Radio 1 artist?

They more or less have actually :(

They made a comment once how around the Aphrodite era they perceived her as being passé.
