It depends how you look at it: 911, HMH and Bloody Mary (top ten pop hit in the US!) were snubbed. 911 wasn't pushed as a single that much in the UK though.

 

But they have long history in snubbing Lady Gaga which makes her a good example here, because some of her hit songs are quite traditional and don't cater the target audience R1 at all. Songs like Million Reasons, ARUTW and HMH were ballads and R1 refuses to touch those even with the longest stick.

They haven't playlisted any of her soundtrack singles, and I think that's exactly the reason - they're soundtrack singles (worth remembering they didn't support the more commercial I Ain't Worried from the same film as Hold My Hand either, they seem more resistant to soundtrack singles in general). Million Reasons was probably a sign of them starting to drop support for her, before she obviously clawed back a lot of favour from the general public via A Star Is Born and Radio 1 hopped back on with Chromatica (I don't think 911 got a single push at all here, same also for Bloody Mary possibly?). I definitely expect Radio 1 to be on board for the first single from Gaga's next studio album!

It depends on the sound, but I would guess so! She visited their morning show when promoting House of Gucci and all... So they are not against her, just certain type of songs by her, and understandably so.

Dua was a climber and they didn't play her either WTF

I wish I could say I'm shocked but I've known what R1 is from previous behaviour. We should get Kylie to #1 and then see them try to find an excuse not to play it.

They did play it on both of the last 2 chart shows, they're not that averse to playing it.

Radio 1 just seem to have completely lost touch with their audience. It’s such an old-fashioned way of thinking, Kylie is top 50 on Spotify and top 10 on Apple Music do they think it’s exclusively 40+ year olds streaming her? I don’t know, it’s very weird to me.

I do get that Radio 1 is not driven by the charts, but the way they sometimes cling on for dear life to bland songs that have come nowhere near the charts - like Jess Glynne - makes me laugh. It’s not even charting on iTunes despite plenty of radio play, why do they want to keep a clearly unpopular song on their playlist over Kylie/Loreen who are aimed at a similar audience but whose songs have proven interest?

 

Surely the ultimate aim is to attract and maintain an audience? And I can guarantee their intended audience don’t care how old Kylie is in 2023 if they like the song. Ageism - particularly towards female artists - massively needs to be stamped out at Radio 1.

If Foo Fighters went top 10 with a new single I bet they'd get played and not skipped lol.

I’ve always wondered if Radio 1 doesn’t playlist acts like Kylie because the audience isn’t interested or whether their audience isn’t interested because Radio 1 doesn’t playlist thee acts. Like you say, Kylie has obviously gained interest with younger audiences from the way it has taken off on streaming and I’m sure a lot of their audience are old enough to remember how many 00s bops Kylie had, so it’s not like she is totally irrelevant to their consciousness. A catchy pop song is a catchy pop song, regardless of age.

It wasn't playlisted, but it did get played on the Top 40 show more often than not, even after it left the Top 10.

 

Regarding First Look, I really wouldn't read too much into what does and doesn't get played there - they've regularly skipped climbers and new entries for no apparent reason, even when those songs are on their playlist.

Kylie isn't actually blacklisted by Radio 1. They played Slow and Can't Get You Out Of My Head last month. They just said they won't playlist her new songs, she's not completely banned from the station. I wouldn't be surprised if Padam Padam gets random plays at some point.

I think it was a dumb idea, I think the genre of the music is more important, they seem to fine to play adult contemporary songs if they're sung by a 21 year-old which seemed odd to me, and I think decreasing the amount of talking would help as well.

Yeah First Look generally seems a little bit amateurish (apparently they didn’t even mention Dave and Central Cee as a contender today LOL), so I don’t think I’d read a huge amount into their selections.

That seems like such a non-issue. And it doesn’t totally explain it, Britney was 29 when they gave up on her, I doubt many over-30s were playing Till the World Ends back then when they snubbed it. I don't know and I agree it was a dumb decision. Also I believe they didn't see any significant decrease in the average age of their listener afterwards so it didn't even work. I suspect behind the scenes the authorities or some organisation like Ofcom was criticising them so Radio 1 just wanted to do something so they could say "See, we're taking action".

 

I was a teenager in the 00's and the Kylie and Madonna hit songs for example were just like any other hit song among my peers, I never saw anybody refuse them because they were around in the 80's. A lot of guys did refuse to listen to pop music in general, but that was a genre issue, not an age issue, they wouldn't be caught dead listening to Kelly Clarkson or Natasha Bedingfield either. So I knew even at the time it wasn't going to make much of a difference.

Looks like i missed a lot this evening :lol: I'm surprised that R1 ignored Padam Padam, I wonder if they'll skip it on Friday, especially given it might be out of the top 10 by then. Also obviously not a surprise to see Dave/Central Cee at #1, they've got it on lock and should be a high first week sale too. finally a new #1 lol
