August 6, 20231 yr I’m struggling to remember what the next no1 is in 1985! The next number 1 is one of my favourites of the decade and the one after is one of the worst number 1s ever…….
August 6, 20231 yr yes at Material Girl <3 the best in that top 10, the Madonna-mania was full on already think the Bryan Adams album from 84/85 that had Run to You also had Summer of 69 and Heaven but the UK didn't care much :/ poor Bryan :o
August 6, 20231 yr That's part of the fun of the thread...... :D Exactly 😁 I’m thinking with the sales currently it’ll be a high entry
August 6, 20231 yr The next number 1 is one of my favourites of the decade and the one after is one of the worst number 1s ever……. I def remember the worst one your talking about!
August 7, 20231 yr Author 16TH MARCH Its sales are already on the slide to 85,918 but Dead Or Alive hold at the top slot, their grip looks slight given the happenings directly below the track this week. The band are clearly enjoying their time in the limelight however with a string of outrageous interviews by Pete Burns who gives good headlines in the temporary absence of Boy George. PGNiXGX2nLU The trouble on the horizon comes from Earth Wind & Fire’s frontman Philip Bailey and Phil Collins who have teamed up to give us “Easy Lover” which jets in 20-2 (63,342). In doing so it becomes Bailey’s first taste of solo success in the UK charts but Collins’s 7th top 20 single, it is primarily an advert for Bailey’s third album “Chinese Wall” which is out in a fortnight, Collins of course spends a third week at No 1 on the album charts this week as his “No Jacket Required” dominates but it doesn’t contain this hit. 2351s26CvR4 Over the course of the last 2 years we’ve had several big 70s act reviving career’s thought behind them in terms of top 10 singles, Alvin Stardust, Gary Glitter, and Slade most notably, now add David Cassidy to that list. He’s just finished his first album in 7 years, and has been absent from the UK charts for almost 10 years, but he’s teamed up with Alan Tarney who is more famous for his work for Leo Sayer and Cliff Richard to come up with “Last Kiss”. Add in backing vocals from a certain George Michael and you get a top 10 hit, the track bounds 11-6 (44,727). YnSXb3DUo88 It’s a good time to be a Jackson with Michael Jackson undoubtedly the biggest star on the planet at the moment, brother Jermaine is back to shine as well, his only previous top 20 single was 1980’s “Let’s Get Serious” which went to No 8. “Do What You Do” comes with a B-Side called “Tell Me I’m Not Dreaming” which is duet with his more famous brother and can only help sales as it climbs 18-7 (32,402) to become his biggest hit to date! rr7Zod2gSfk Written for their 1980 album “Voices” Hall & Oates clearly didn’t believe that “Everytime You Go Away” was single worthy but thankfully Paul Young did as his version sprints 26-9 (30,277) to become his sixth straight top 10 single on the trot. Young’s second album “The Secret Of Association” is out in a fortnight and now already contains a trio of top 10 singles, you can’t get much better promotion for it really, his last album “No Parlez” is of course a million seller with sales of almost 1,3 million already. wbbFVL0nc8I Madonna was on for the No 2 spot for most of the week but was pipped by the Phillips at the death having to settle for a 5-3 (62,577) move, just ahead of Stephen “Tin Tin” Duffy” who holds at No 4 (61,710). The Commodores drift 3-5 (45,237)and Paige & Dickson slide 2-9 (31,824) but they should sell their 700,000th copy sometime this week, and Prince falls 7-10 (27,557) in a pretty good week for sales all around. 1- YOU SPIN ME ROUND (LIKE A RECORD)- Dead Or Alive (85,918) 2- EASY LOVER- Phil Bailey & Phil Collins (63,342) 3- MATERIAL GIRL- Madonna (62,577) 4- KISS ME- Stephen “Tin Tin” Duffy (61,710) 5- NIGHTSHIFT- The Commodores (45,237) 6- LAST KISS- David Cassidy (44,727) 7- DO WHAT YOU DO- Jermaine Jackson (32,402) 8- I KNOW HIM SO WELL- Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson (31,824) 9- EVERYTIME YOU GO AWAY- Paul Young (30,277) 10- LET’S GO CRAZY/ TAKE ME WITH U- Prince (27,557)
August 7, 20231 yr Dead Or Alive *.* maybe my favourite SAW-related release. 'Let's Go Crazy' and 'Material Girl' are good'uns too
August 7, 20231 yr I Know Him So Well should have been the final ABBA single in a perfect world (before the reunion ofc)
August 7, 20231 yr 'Easy Lover' is great - a great mix of genres like disco, soul and stadium rock. 'Everytime You Go Away' has concert/party leaving song vibes - I can just imagine the lights going on and everyone leaving to that song! Around this time Sharpe and Numan peaked at #17 with 'Change Your Mind' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pu-mbcwKds8 - that production almost could be 2010s deep house like Disciples.
August 8, 20231 yr oh Madonna so close to #2 :o sadness :/ really liked that Paul Young song but only knew it years later when he released his GH bit weird for Phil cos the lead single from No Jacket, Sussudio, kinda underperformed and peaked at #12 and then goes to have this big hit with Easy Lover that is not on the album
August 9, 20231 yr Sussudio isn't very good in my opinion compared to Easy Lover, but it's iconic that Phil made up a new word.
August 9, 20231 yr Author 23RD MARCH All change at the top of the charts this week as the two Phil’s duly take over from Dead Or Alive with little doubt from the off who would win, “Easy Lover” accelerated to a sale of 85,442 to give Bailey something he never got with Earth Wind & Fire, a UK No 1 single. Their biggest hit was of course “Let’s Groove” four years ago which made No 3, yet for Collins it’s his second chart topper following on the heels of “You Can’t Hurry Love” in early 1983, Collins also remains at No 1 on the album front for his fourth week JkRKT6T0QLg Her last single “Invisible” surprised many by only making No 21, but Alison Moyet proves it is just a blip as she returns with conviction this week on her cover of Billie Holiday’s “That Ole Devil Called Love”. It doesn’t feature on her debut solo album “Alf” which has spent its entire life span of 19 weeks in the top 10 since its release back in November topping the charts for a week in January. That helps to explain the current single’s No 11 debut last week and that it flies 11-2 (61,795) this week to become her biggest solo hit and equal the peak she attained as part of Yazoo back in 1982. Once again you have to feel slightly sorry for Madonna who looked good for the runner up spot all week until TOTP sent Moyet’s sales into overdrive and resulted in Madonna being held at No 3 again on an improved sale of 56,661, yet she was also nearly caught by a fast improving Paul Young who soared 9-4 (56,406) and Stephen “Tin Tin” Duffy who both had TOTP exposure though the latter fell 4-5 (51,187). 8qvGD-Rnax4 Our other new song in the big 10 comes from Go West who now see their debut single become a big deal not least thanks to a promo directed by Godley & Crème. “We Close Our Eyes” has been progressing nicely over the last few weeks and now arrives 16-9 (32,249), you only have to wait a fortnight for the band’s self- titled debut album. LSSOPdjMdnA Dead Or Alive tumble 1-6 as their sales collapsed to 50,269 copies in doing so and bring total sales to 363,321 and may struggle to make half a million all told which is a surprise for a track which made No 1 and has so far registered 19 weeks on the chart. Jermaine Jackson holds at No 7 (43,044) as David Cassidy dips 6-8 (40,273) and Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson continue to drift away 8-10 (30,991)as it sales over the 700,000 mark. On a final note this week sees the release of the fourth single by Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Moyet and the two Phil’s should be worried! 1- EASY LOVER- Phil Bailey & Phil Collins (85,442) 2- THAT OLE DEVIL CALLED LOVE- Alison Moyet (61,795) 3- MATERIAL GIRL- Madonna (56,661) 4- EVERYTIME YOU GO AWAY- Paul Young (56,406) 5- KISS ME- Stephen “Tin Tin” Duffy (51,187) 6- YOU SPIN ME ROUND (LIKE A RECORD)- Dead Or Alive (50,269) 7- DO WHAT YOU DO- Jermaine Jackson (43,044) 8- LAST KISS- David Cassidy (40,273) 9- WE CLOSE OUR EYES- Go West (32,249) 10- I KNOW HIM SO WELL- Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson (30,991)
