7TH SEPTEMBER

Recorded specifically for the Live Aid event but not performed on the night, David Bowie & Mick Jagger’s cover of Martha & The Vandellas 1964 single “Dancing In The Streets” debuts straight into the No 1 spot this week this week becoming the first song since, appropriately enough, “Do They Know It’s Christmas” to do so. It was recorded back in June by the pair who had planned to perform it at Live Aid whilst Bowie was in London and Jagger in Philadelphia but due to technical issues it didn’t work out though the promo was shown two times throughout the night. The track generated considerable interest and pre-orders and this week sold 103,428 copies to take the top spot from UB40 & Chrissie Hynde who only got a 3% boost in being No 1 last week to register 80,121 as they tumble to No 1. The original version of “Dancing In The Street” reached No 4 back when it was re-issued in 1969, so this is already by some chalk the best performing version. It co-credits Nile Rogers as a producer continuing his hot streak, and of course gives a posthumous co-writing credit to Marvin Gaye. In succeeding "I Got You Babe" it becomes the first out and out cover to replace another cover since "This Ole House" took over from "Jealous Guy" in 1981, and all in all this is the fourth charity No 1 in nine months. The original version of "I Got You Babe" was knocked off the top back in 1965 by The Rolling Stones "Satisfaction" so this week is a bit of history repeating for Mick Jagger!

The only other new track in the top 10 arrives at the other end, “Holding Out For A Hero” is a typically OTT single by Bonnie Tyler who has found following up “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” a hard task with subsequent releases all failing to dent the top 40. Indeed “Holding Out For A Hero” only made No 96 when it was released last year and even featuring in the film “Footloose” couldn’t help it whilst giving top 10 hits to Kenny Loggins and Deniece Williams, but it now gets a re-issue after finding new radio support and bounds 34-10 (20,604) in just its second week to become her 4th top 10 hit in 9 years. A major reason for its resurgence is the use of the track on the recent BBC series "Cover Up"

No other new tracks but there is plenty of movement with those in the pink including Baltimora who accelerate 5-3 (48,450), Princess holds at No 7 (26,622) and King nudge 9-8 (25,568). Those in the black are Madonna 2-4 (42,415), Kate Bush folds 3-5 (40,375), The Cars reverse 4-6 (34,391) and Dire Straits hit the skids 8-9 (21,726)

not a fan of Dancing in the Street, Mick Jagger I'm kinda the anti-fan

same for Bonnie Tyler

too bad Kate Bush only peaked at #3, deserved #1 over Jagger/Bowie or UB40

Don’t worry Kate would get there in the end 😉

14TH SEPTEMBER

Surprising no-one David Bowie and Mick Jagger remain on top of the heap this week and indeed accelerate to a best yet for the year of 163,557 to easily take the crown and creates the biggest gap between the top 2 this year as a consequence. That runner up is Bonnie Tyler who bolts 10-2 (62,458) after a breathless TOTP performance. It is Bowie’s 5th chart topper and Jagger’s first outside the Rolling Stones, his previous best was the No 14 track last year in unison with the Jacksons on “State Of Shock”. The song’s 266,985 in 2 weeks puts it on course to be one of the year’s biggest selling singles!

Talking of big seller’s Stevie Wonder’s 1984 hit “I Just Called To Say I Love You” spent 6 weeks at No 1 last year and sold an incredible 1.68 million to rest as the third biggest seller of the decade so far, his 20th studio album is due in a fortnight and lead single “Part Time Lover” duly delivers his 17th top 10 single as it soars 20-5 (41,378) in its second week, it also features backing vocals by Luther Vandross for those interested.

Meanwhile Holland’s biggest girl group (?) Mai Tai find themselves with a second top 10 single in the form of “Body & Soul”. The song has taken the long road into the top 10 moving 64-43-41-36-18-11-10 so far, it is, like their previous hit “History”, a single which has already been and gone from the charts in their homeland and flopped on first issue but is now getting some international success as it attracted 25,602 buyers in the last week.

The Cars hold at No 6 (30,362), but the other half of the top 10 are all sliding. UB40 & Chrissie Hynde descend 2-3 (56,100) as their new album debuts disappointingly at No 20, Baltimora ebb 3-4 (50,677), Madonna dips 4-7 (28,509) as it tops the 640,000 mark and it should move past “Like A Virgin” next few weeks to become her best selling single, her next single “Angel” is released this week and she could have two tracks in the top 10 again come next week! Kate Bush also dips 5-8 (27,774) and Princess moves 7-9 (26.928) despite increased sales.

1- DANCING IN THE STREET- Mick Jagger & David Bowie (163,557)

2- HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO- Bonnie Tyler (62,458)

3- I GOT YOU BABE- UB40 & Chrissie Hynde (56,100)

4- TARZAN BOY- Baltimora (50,677)

5- PART TIME LOVER- Stevie Wonder (41,378)

6- DRIVE- The Cars (30,362)

7- INTO THE GROOVE- Madonna (28,509)

8- RUNNING UP THAT HILL- Kate Bush (27,744)

9- SAY I’M YOUR NUMBER ONE- Princess (26,928)

10- BODY AND SOUL- Mai Tai (25,602)

Wow didn’t realise ‘Part Time Lover’ was released as late as 1985, always thought it was in like 1976 or something!
I just realised what Tarzan Boy sounds like. I never knew that’s what it was called! Great song.
Running Up That Hill deserved to get to #1... if nothing else, that single cover needed to be in the top left looking like she was aiming at the competition behind her.

do people really like Part Time lover? sounds almost as bad as I Just Call... to me

hope it doesn't go all the way

21ST SEPTEMBER

“Dancing In The Streets” continues at No 1 for a third week topping up the Band Aid fund nicely as it registered a third week with over 100,000 copies, 105,179 to be exact. You’ll note of course that that means it lost sales week on week and indeed as Bonnie Tyler holds at No 2 she increased sales by 27% to 78,149 which, coupled with the 35% decrease for Bowie & Jagger could mean a very tight week next week if that was replicated!

marillion87.jpg

Marillion are up next with the follow up to “Kayleigh” which went to No 2 in the summer, “Lavender” is another cut from their No 1 album “Misplaced Childhood” which has moved the group into the stadium rock act that it was meant to with major radio support. The group’s recent tour had to be cancelled due to problems with Fish’s throat which also resulted in their famous TOTP appearance last week where Fish wrote the lyrics on paper to clearly show he was miming. It’s done the track no harm as It climbs 13-5 (34,034), incredibly it’s only the band’s second top 10 single. The album responds well moving 16-5 this week the first time in the top 10 since it dropped out in July.

Amii Stewart originally made No 6 with her version of Eddie Floyd’s “Knock On Wood” back in 1979 at the height of disco and followed that with her version of the Doors “Light My Fire” which went one better at No 5 but her fortunes faded with Disco and by the end of 1980 the hits dried up until earlier this year when “Friends” hit No 12 quite unexpectedly and rekindled interest in her. She’s now put her two biggest hits together as a double A-Side and remixed them, this week “Knock On Wood/ Light My Fire” burns 12-7 (28,917), an album of remixes of her early work is promised for Christmas.

Much like Phil Collins, Midge Ure is planning on running a successful solo career aside his group duties, he takes that important step with the song “If I Was” which rockets 29-8 (28,356) and is the first single from his debut solo album “The Gift” due next month. Of course it isn’t his first solo single, he made No 9 back in 1982 with his version of “No Regrets” but this is already his biggest solo hit and credits Mark King of Level 42 on bass. The 12” also contains his version of Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold The World” further linking Ure’s work on the Band Aid/ Live Aid project.

Just as “Into The Groove” drops out of the top 10 Madonna returns with her sixth top 10 of the year- an impressive feat in anyone’s book. “Angel” debuts straight in at No 10 (26,418) and is a fourth release from the “like A Virgin” album which also finally makes No 1 in its 44th week on the chart, that;s the third longest time an album has taken to make the top after Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" (49 wks) and Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" (66 wks) but it the longest taken by a female soloist. It’s also produced by Nile Rogers whose own resurgence continues unabated, but unusually there is no video for the single, Warner Brothers apparently think that another video doing the rounds might be Madonna overload. It’s already been a top 5 single in the US and in becoming her sixth top 10 single here Madonna has now more top 10 singles to her name in the 80s than any other female solo act, she’s also had at least one single in the top 10 every week for the last 15 weeks with no end in sight- the next Madonna single? That’s just three weeks away and will be called “Gambler”- she’s simply unstoppable at the moment.

Between Madonna and Midge Ure, Mai Tai manage to scrounge a place as they rise 10-9 (27,183) and Stevie Wonder completes a rise 5-3 (45,407), Baltimora hold at No 4 but their sales are well down at 34,408 and former No 1 “I Got You Babe” slips 3-6 (31,943).

1- DANCING IN THE STREET- Mick Jagger & David Bowie (105,179)

2- HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO- Bonnie Tyler (78,149)

3- PART TIME LOVER- Stevie Wonder (45,407)

4- TARZAN BOY – Baltimora (34,408)

5- LAVENDER- Marillion (34,034)

6- I GOT YOU BABE- UB40 & Chrissie Hynde (31,943)

7- KNOCK ON WOOD/ LIGHT MY FIRE- Amii Stewart (28,917)

8- IF I WAS- Midge Ure (28,356)

9- BODY AND SOUL- Mai Tai (27,183)

10- ANGEL- Madonna (26,418)

Wow what a trek for Madonna in the album chart! Great that she got to #1 there eventually.

I absolutely love ‘If I Was’

Had no idea that ‘Knock On Wood’ was a top 10 hit in the 80s too!

I would have advised Midge Ure that dancing in his video was not a good idea.

For the first time in a while I don't really love anything in that top 10. Baltimora and Stevie Wonder are the highs for me, Midge Ure and Bonnie not bad and the others aren't really my cup of tea at all. Even Madonna.

I have long liked 'Knock On Wood'. I suppose hi-NRG after its popularity in 1984 and early 1985 strangely wasn't in the charts much in summer/autumn 1985 so that rerelease was welcome.

'If I Was' is a bit of an epic with its soaring chorus. 'Part Time Lover' is catchy and very good.

'Angel' is great too, the instrumental/melody reminds me of Eurythmics 'Here Comes The Rain Again'. Its been largely forgotten in Madonna's discography.

I didn’t realise ‘Dancing in the Street’ had such great sales!

Also love that TOTP performance from Fish!!

Love ‘If I Was’!! ❤️

Never was a big fan of Angel but it's easily the best thing in that (not very good) top 10

that top 3 is a top 3 from hell :/
