If Polyhex is correct the last Walk On By cover to chart was the Gabrielle one, which is so recent it came out about a month before I was born  the Beyoncé sample is more recent of course but that was a two-week low top 40 hit six years ago. It's a far less common cover/sample choice now than it once was and I actually think it complements the Doja song nicely. It's not quite the same as Children being sampled in two hits in such close proximity, which was an earlier comparison that was made.

Certainly in modern times (let’s say the past 25 years) it hasn’t been overdone.

Dionne Warwick [1964 - original] (#6, Billboard Hot 100)

Isaac Hayes [1969 - cover] (#30, Billboard Hot 100)

Gloria Gaynor [1975 - cover] (#98, Billboard Hot 100)

The Stranglers [1978 - cover]

Average White Band [1979 - cover] (#92, Billboard Hot 100)

Sybil [1990 - cover] (#74, Billboard Hot 100)

Gabrielle [1997 - cover]

Seal [2005 - cover]

Beyoncé [2016 - sample, based on 1969 version] (2Pac also sampled this version on a 1995 album track, and there’s a handful of other rap artists who sampled it, but either not hits or just album tracks).

From a US perspective Walk on By hasn’t been a major hit since the 1960s, and in the UK it’s Gabrielle in 1997 (Seal’s 2005 didn’t do well anywhere bar Belgium Flanders and Belgium Wallonia).

Paint the Town Red appears to be the first notable example of a sample directly of Dionne’s original version.

I'm saying you did the exact same thing, you made the assertion that "'Walk On By' has been covered quite a lot", but didn't provide a single example. My point was that it's a lot easier to say that, than provide an example, because doing so would just show that there hasn't really been a cover/sample of note to render this one as egregious.

My assertion that 'Walk On By' has been covered quite a lot wasn't the main point of my post though, it was just a passing observation - I don't think it's necessary to provide examples every time you make a statement lol. People are welcome to look up examples if they want to challenge my statement. But if you want examples, well Jay has very kindly provided the above list, that's a fair few covers of the song which have charted and that's basically what I was referring to - there have been many more examples of the song being covered than sampled (I also didn't say anything about it being covered in modern times). I still assert that it hasn't been "sampled to death"!

Depends how Miley does next week

Hmmm, I wonder if this week is out of the question. Feel like she may run Dua close if she carries on the way she has this week with her streams. Although probably too late on now.

It'll be interesting - I can see Miley and (I know call me delusional) Tate due to how massive her song is on TikTok challenging in the next couple of weeks.
Doja's still a fair bit behind Dua on Apple so the Spotify lead won't mean very much yet, so I think it's too late for this week but she'll be in a very good spot for next week!
Drake’s album is also confirmed as this Friday, but given the lead single was Search & Rescue, I wouldn’t bet on it producing a #1
According to info I can find, #23 (its position in Ireland this week) is a new peak there, which would explain the reset

I was meaning in the UK it peaked at 21 original but it would have to do a little more to outpeak that here if it did get a reset,

23 in Ireland is a repeak though

How about on Amazon? How far ahead is Dua there? I keep trying to find the real time link to top songs but can't seem to locate it! lol

Tate as in McRae?

I just read Zane Lowe about saying that Drake has a new album on Friday (the 25th)

and according to him, there is an "industry shaking feature"

my money is on Billie Eilish but knowing what a moron Zane is it might be 21 Savage :D

Is Ed really industry shaking? I'm not even saying that as hater lol, he's always on features.

My immediate thought is Beyonce, which genuinely would be "industry shaking" I guess.

Rihanna finally giving us something lmao?

(well she has worked with Drake several times before ;) )
