oh wow at Tom Odell, really don't understand it but alas

how come he does nearly 200K with zero playlist support, was like track #35 or something on NMF

and sure he might have pushed on socials, but he always does and he releases tracks all the time but nothing catches

so really surprised this looks like it's gonna be even bigger than Another Love :o

That's the power of virality. Another example this week is the new David Kushner song, which hasn't made the top 200, just like Elk Grove earlier this year. The song released between them, significantly teased on socials in advance of release, debuted at #1 on Spotify. As much as I think labels spend too much time hoping for a viral hit these days, it's obvious why there's so much focus on TikTok and teasers, because it really does pay off when it connects.

 

Could easily just "do a Hozier" and be a 2 or 3 week top 40 hit, but that's already more than I ever expected for it - his last (new) top 100 hit was Magnetised, seven years ago, from his second album. Black Friday is (possibly) the first single from his *sixth* album...! So exciting to see Tom back in the chart with new music.

The Take That song is excellent, sounds like it could be on Darren Hayes ‘Tension and the spark’. Sadly it’s well down the list on NMF. Again once again, unless you are Kylie, Beyoncé etc. you have no chance!

not surprised at Doja Cat's underperformance. Don't think she has a crazy fanbase. Whenever she releases new songs, nothing ever happens initially... then after a while some go viral on tiktok if people do a dance to it or use it on a filter or something... but it's always after a while and cos of tiktok, naturally she never does well on day 1 or week 1, so no surprises at the underperformance...

 

Well she might of done had she not told them off a few weeks ago!

The top 2 new entries on Spotify both being releases I wasn't even aware were happening ddd. Good for Tom Odell finally managing to get another new hit though!

 

Pretty much what I was expecting for Doja's album, better than its complete no-show on Apple but still not a huge impact. On US Spotify it's also only barely doing better than the Lil Tecca album *_* (which is more a shockingly good performance for Tecca than a shockingly bad one for Doja, although kind of a little bit of both)

 

Yay for 'I Remember Everything' getting a new peak again today, was starting to worry it might have begun to stall. I see nothing from the new Zach EP managing to chart here though.

Looks like 'Agora Hills' could give Doja another decent sized hit from this era at least (notably it's climbed from #16 to #10 in its second day in the US, partially by overtaking most of Zach Bryan's EP tracks that debuted ahead but still) and can never rule out something else going viral some time down the line.
