BuzzJack's favourite top 100 hit for 2023 week 31 and auto-qualifying for the August monthly round is Calvin Harris and Sam Smith - Desire.

BuzzJack's favourite top 100 hit for 2023 week 32 and auto-qualifying for the August monthly round is Doja Cat - Paint The Town Red.

Scottish DJ Calvin Harris joins the list of names to have won two of these polls with his second trance single of the year, 'Desire' with regular collaborator British singer Sam Smith who notches their first win, following in the footsteps of the megahit 'Miracle' from earlier in the year, earning the support of over 6 in 10 voters. No idea how, it's awful. The song made a more muted splash in the UK chart than 'Miracle', landing in the low top 20, but has since risen to the top 10 and challenges for a top 5 peak in the coming week. It had a 6 vote lead in the poll ahead of a pair of other dance hits of varying flavours in joint 2nd, one a comeback hit (minus Becky Hill) from Chase And Status, Bou and their cast of thousands with a jungle/DnB heater and one the solo chart debut of recently in demand vocalist Issey Cross singing over a The Verve sample. Following an influx of late votes, American rapper and cow enthusiast Doja Cat is victorious in her poll with 'Paint The Town Red', the 2nd single from her forthcoming 4th album 'Scarlet', though it's a low scoring winner only getting votes from just over 4 in 10 voters. The song is of course bound to become her first UK #1 this week after a fast viral rise from its low top 20 debut but clearly the greater achievement was it being her first poll win here. There's a tie for 2nd place in this poll as well for another pair of dance songs, with Bebe Rexha and David Guetta's new team up (nowhere near as bad as their last one) coming in alongside everyone's favourite AI Jazzy both 2 votes behind Doja's eventual tally. My apologies to Bebe who was in fact in the lead before Dobbo's bumping of the thread to enquire about my laziness with hosting this, oops.

The Aphex Twin EP managed to secure enough votes to also cross the double figure mark to finish 4th in the week 31 poll (interested to see if it does enough to make the August monthly round...) All 4 of Travis Scott's charting album tracks generated enough support to avoid the ignominy of being mentioned as sub 5 vote getters, although none of them get to double figures either, with the one solo cut being the most popular and the one with Drake the least popular. Go figure. Drake as lead artist does a little better with his freestyle alongside Central Cee getting a surprisingly robust 8 votes. Everything from week 32 just about got to 5 votes - even the absolutely dreadful Whitney Houston cover - but a couple from week 31 fall just short, sadly including Burna Boy's feel-good afrobop 'Big 7' which falls 3 votes short of its titular number (we'll see if his higher charting hits post album release also do better here) but the flop of the week is ArrDee and Bugzy Malone's team-up and attempt at a stream trolling title which I am sure everyone has already forgotten about, it got 2 votes from somewhere.

We're live again and for what I hope will be the only time it's a 3 in 1 poll this week - as with previous multipolls there are extra options to either register a null vote if you want to count as a participant in the poll but don't like any of the songs, or to say you're only interested in engaging with 1 or 2 of the polls.

Week 33 will presumably be walked by Olivia with only maybe 1 or 2 at a push of the other options being credible opposition (let's see how many people are going to openly back Oliver Anthony Music etc.) Week 34 is the kind of week I didn't really think much about when I came up with the idea for this poll series, one of these 3 songs gets to join the list above as a poll winner and auto-qualify as monthly round cannon fodder by a lucky fluke. Week 35 is probably the most interesting one of the three which has motivated me to get the polls going again. The playlist for all 3 weeks combined comes out to 1 hour and 12 minutes (27 minutes and 48 seconds for week 33 (nearly 10 minutes of which are taken up by a singular Fredo song which I'm sure BuzzJack will be thrilled about), a quick 11 minutes and 18 seconds for week 34 and 33 minutes and 48 seconds for week 35).

Vote for as many or as few songs as you want and would be ideal if you can make sure you've heard all the songs before voting if possible!

If I can hold myself to getting back on schedule for September... we'll go for a Sunday evening deadline again :jump: then will also get up the slightly belated August monthly round which will contain songs from the previous thread's 2 polls plus the first 2 of the 3 in this thread.

And here are the results from the July monthly round... (with thanks to the 29 people that voted in that :magic:)

Unfortunately it is the end of the road for these:

10 83 Ryan Gosling - I'm Just Ken

9 121 Stormzy and RAYE - The Weekend

8 133 Ava Max - Choose Your Fighter

7 168 Charli XCX - Speed Drive

6 178 Becky Hill and Chase And Status - Disconnect

5 189 Troye Sivan - Rush

Still in with a chance of making the final for the year is...

4 190 Taylor Swift - I Can See You (3 12s)

Which means our next 3 guaranteed spots in the yearly round go to Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift :cheer: The top 2 were relatively clear and predictable this time - both now UK #1s of course, Olivia Rodrigo's comeback single takes the top spot for the month with a 26 point lead over Billie Eilish's Barbie ballad in 2nd, being the only two songs to cross the 200 point mark - but it was a true fight to the death for the 3rd-5th place slots which were separated by just a single point. All 3 songs were by artists with the initials TS, two by Taylor Swift and one by Troye Sivan. In the end, Taylor's capitalistic greed won out as she took both the direct slot in the yearly final and the chance to win another slot there via the playoff round, as both of her songs got exactly 190 points (12 behind Billie) while Troye fell heartbreakingly short at 189. And the old wins out over the new on the tiebreak as 'Enchanted (Taylor's Version)' topped the rankings for 4 people compared to 3 who did the same for 'I Can See You'. I politely disagree but here's hoping 'I Can See You' is well placed to get through the playoff anyway. Not quite making it to the 3 way tussle but not too far off either, there are also decent showings here for Becky Hill and Charli XCX, while the other 3 are a bit more also-rans, particularly Ryan Gosling who quite predictably comes dead last with the only song to not reach triple figures.

3 190 Taylor Swift - Enchanted (Taylor's Version) (4 12s)

2 202 Billie Eilish - What Was I Made For?

1 228 Olivia Rodrigo - vampire

These were my ratings for the last couple of polls:

Week 31:

1 'Baddadan' 9.5/10

2 'Blackbox Life Recorder 21f / in a room7 f760 [EP]' 9/10 (9/10 for track 1, 8/10 for track 2, 9.5/10 for track 3, 7.5/10 for track 4)

3 'HYAENA' 9/10

4 'Big 7' 9/10

5 'MELTDOWN' 8/10

6 'On The Radar Freestyle' 7.5/10

7 'FE!N' 6.5/10

8 'Bittersweet Goodbye' 5.5/10

9 'Enough Is Enough' 4/10

10 'One Direction' 3.5/10

11 'Desire' 2/10

Voted for the top 6. Chase And Status and friends serving up some retro jungley goodness, I kinda knew I'd stan even before listening to it but it delivered. Likewise with the Aphex Twin EP, the two songs named in the EP title are both excellent, track 2 is a bit more of a fragment but still serving the vibes, track 4 really just an inferior remix of track 1 but still good for what it is, decided to try and rate the EP as a whole but I do think 'in a room7 F760' would be slightly ahead of 'Baddadan' as my overall favourite song of the week. 'MELTDOWN' and 'FE!N' both had great parts but faltered a bit as whole songs (on the former, I really like the Drake verse and Travis' later parts but it has a lull in the middle and the 'hook' is pretty weak and keeps killing its momentum, it's still good overall but could have been great; on the latter, it pretty much derails entirely from when Playboi Carti opens his mouth onwards and I say that as someone who enjoys a good deal of Carti's work). 'HYAENA' really sticks the landing though, an inventive instrumental choice and great flows throughout. 'Big 7' is probably the most I've ever instantly got a Burna Boy song ('Last Last' was more of a grower), just has such an infectious vibe to it, shame it didn't do better. 'On The Radar Freestyle' has enough funny bars to have been just about worthy of a vote even if it probably doesn't have great replay value, Drake does well borrowing Cench's flow here. 'Bittersweet Goodbye' is passable enough but I'd rather just listen to The Verve. Unfortunately not impressed again by Post Malone, some not so great vocals on this one and not really much of a compelling tune to be found either. The ArrDee/Bugzy thing just sounds really dated and corny, not terrible per se but I'm good with just giving it the one listen and forgetting it. I might be alone in hating 'Desire' but I just think the drop is absolutely terrible, I don't mind the verses (they're why it's not an even lower score) but they do just feel like 'Miracle' again but worse, and the chorus kind of irks me a bit due to the 'desire'/'higher' rhyme which is just peak laziness.

Week 32:

1 'TELEKINESIS' 9.5/10

2 'Paint The Town Red' 8/10

3 'Feel It' 7/10

4 'One In A Million' 6/10

5 'Million Dollar Bill' 1/10

Voted for the top 2. 'TELEKINESIS' is comfortably my fave I've heard yet from the Travis album, I was unsure what to expect from it being 6 minutes long but I think it's perfectly paced and all 3 artists did their part of the group project, SZA probably the MVP but Travis and Future are both great on this too. 'Paint The Town Red' is not as good as 'Attention' but I'm liking it, still feels like an artistic progression from 'Planet Her' even if it does bring back a bit of the poppier sensibility in the hook (the second half of the chorus is one hell of an earworm). The Jazzy AI is learning to use better production but still can't quite give my full cosign to this one. I was shocked at how much I didn't hate 'One In A Million', it's not exactly great but considering I don't like 'When Love Takes Over' nor do I like... nearly any of Bebe Rexha's previous charting songs, a 'this is an ok generic dance song' reaction is a bit of a miracle. Vocal melody reminds me a bit of 'Multicolor' by Son Mieux. I was not shocked at how much I hated the Whitney desecration. Please stop. I don't remember Alex Mills' vocals being this horrendous on her previous songs... 1/10 for it being one of my favourite Whitney songs in its original form so I guess yay for it being brought back to the spotlight in some capacity but please just stream the original ~

Went for Fred Again in poll one, Giggs and Hozier in poll 2 and Laufey in poll 3!
Vocal melody reminds me a bit of 'Multicolor' by Son Mieux.
What a shoutout to the future classic! :cheeseblock:

Week 33

Olivia Rodrigo - bad idea right? (#6) - super trashy and terrible chick rock, no thanks

Fred again.. and Obongjayar - adore u (#12) - pleasant and bouncy in equal measure, great vocalist

cassö, RAYE and D-Block Europe - Prada (#32) - I really like the original but this version elevates it even further

Digga D and Potter Payper - Facade (#55) - some terrible lyrics but it has a good flow

Fredo and Eric IV - Quarter Past 3 (#61) - an absolute bore throughout

Oliver Anthony Music - Rich Men North Of Richmond (#64) - really dislike this guy's tone of voice irrespective of the song

Fredo - My Story (#82) - there is literally no reason for a 9 and a half minute Fredo song to ever exist

Voted Fred, casso and Digga.

Week 34

Giggs - Incredible Sauce (feat. Dave) (#77) - giggs always delivers an enticing vocal

Hozier - Damage Gets Done (feat. Brandi Carlile) (#86) - complete mess

Billy Gillies - DNA (Loving You) (feat. Hannah Boleyn) (#97) - this is fab, very beachball in production

Voted Giggs and Billy.

Week 35

Miley Cyrus - Used To Be Young (#12) - proper snoozefest

Burna Boy - Cheat On Me (feat. Dave) (#19) - considering the names this is super disappointing

Selena Gomez - Single Soon (#21) - very bland

Burna Boy - City Boys (#31) - back to his usual mid standards with this one

Dave and Tiakola - Meridian (#41) - much of a messness

Joel Corry, MK and Rita Ora - Crinkin' (#44) - awful, lazy, throw it on the manure pile

Zach Bryan - I Remember Everything (feat. Kacey Musgraves) (#56) - about as shit as it looked on paper

Hannah Laing and HVRR - Party All The Time (#65) - was really looking forward to her follow up but I needn't have bothered

Asake - Lonely At The Top (#90) - this one is a vibe

Bugzy Malone - Mrs Lonely (#99) - some seriously odd sample choices here, and horrendous vocals to boot!

Laufey - From The Start (#100) - this sounds as if beebopadoopee decided to do a jazz song

Horrendous. Asake single-handedly saving the week.

The fact week 34 > week 35 despite having 8 fewer songs to vote for.

Week 33

1. Olivia Rodrigo - bad idea right?

2. Fredo and Eric IV - Quarter Past 3

3. Digga D and Potter Payper - Facade

4. Fredo - My Story

5. Fred again.. and Obongjayar - adore u

6. cassö, RAYE and D-Block Europe - Prada

7. Oliver Anthony Music - Rich Men North Of Richmond

Only voting for Olivia from this week although I could have given Fredo a vote too if I was feeling generous. 'bad idea right' is even better than 'vampire' and already one of my favourite songs of the year, 'Quarter Past 3' just sounds nice although I haven't chosen to listen to it outside of my first listen.

'Facade' is what you'd expect from Digga. I'm guessing Potter must currently be in jail based on the audio quality of his verse. 'My Story' is a massive disappointment. Fredo's original Daily Duppy is probably the greatest one ever recorded and this pales in comparison. I've heard it 5 times and can't remember one bar.

'adore u' is sounding ok now I've got used to the vocals but 'prada' is rubbish. Completely takes any of the personality out of the original. It's just 'Ferrari Horses' sped up and put over a cheap sounding beat.

'Rich Men North of Richmond' is awful. Lyrics are embarrassing and he doesn't even sound good.

Week 34

1. Giggs - Incredible Sauce (feat. Dave)

2. Billy Gillies - DNA (Loving You) (feat. Hannah Boleyn)

3. Hozier - Damage Gets Done (feat. Brandi Carlile)

Voted for Giggs but none are great this week.

'Incredible Sauce' is better than most of Giggs' recent efforts but I think it's time he just retires.

'DNA' is more interesting to me than a lot of the dance music around at the moment but still not my thing.

'Damage Gets Done' sounds ok but it's completely unexciting.

Week 35

1. Selena Gomez - Single Soon

2. Dave and Tiakola - Meridian

3. Bugzy Malone - Mrs Lonely

4. Laufey - From The Start

5. Burna Boy - Cheat On Me (feat. Dave)

6. Burna Boy - City Boys

7. Asake - Lonely At The Top

8. Zach Bryan - I Remember Everything (feat. Kacey Musgraves)

9. Miley Cyrus - Used To Be Young

10. Joel Corry, MK and Rita Ora - Drinkin'

11. Hannah Laing and HVRR - Party All The Time

Voting for my top 4 this week. I always love Selena and 'Single Soon' is no exception. 'Meridian' is another banger from Dave. Tiakola provides some nice melodies too. 'Mrs Lonely' is a bit of a guilty pleasure; not great but pretty fun. 'From The Start' feels to cute be in the same vein as Beabadoobee's recent charting songs but not quite as amazing. Could be a grower.

The Burna Boy tracks are both pretty run-of-the-mill. 'City Boys' sounds like it should have been an album track everyone ignored. Is it just the J Hus intro that has made it catch on? 'Lonely At The Top' is in the same vein too, something that sounds good to have on in the background.

I love Kacey's voice but Zack Bryan drags down 'I Remember Everything' for me. I would enjoy it if it was just Kacey. 'Used To Be Young' feels like it's trying to be one of Billie Eilish's dull ballads that she can still get to be a hit.

'Drinkin' sounds just like countless other non-descript hits of recent years and 'Why?' is my only response to 'Party All The Time'.

Olivia Rodrigo - bad idea right? (#6)

Fred again.. and Obongjayar - adore u (#12)

cassö, RAYE and D-Block Europe - Prada (#32)

Giggs - Incredible Sauce (feat. Dave) (#77)

Billy Gillies - DNA (Loving You) (feat. Hannah Boleyn) (#97)

Selena Gomez - Single Soon (#21)

Burna Boy - Cheat On Me (feat. Dave) (#19)

Burna Boy - City Boys (#31)

Week 33: voted 'bad idea right?' and 'Prada' (a DBE song with over 50% of the vote, is Buzzjack OK :kink: ), although 'adore u' has grown on me a little.

Week 34: voted 'DNA', although Hozier's Tears For Fears tribute wasn't far off a vote too.

Week 35: despite having more songs than the other two weeks combined, this was the closest to a null vote for me with a near clean sweep of artists who have done much better. Zach & Kacey got my vote as I was feeling generous and Laufey's was OK - that's about it.

Week 33: I went for Olivia, Fred X Obongjayer & Fredo (My Story)

Week 34: Giggs X Dave & Hozier X Brandi Carlile

Week 35: Burna X Dave, Dave X Tiakola & Zach X Kacey

Stop me if you've heard this one before :teresa: but I do plan to get the next poll up later this evening so anyone who still wants to participate make sure you do during the day to make sure it gets counted!

My rankings this week:

Week 33:

1 'adore u' 8/10

2 'My Story' 7/10

3 'bad idea right?' 5/10

4 'Quarter Past 3' 5/10

5 'Facade' 2/10

6 'Prada' 1.5/10

7 'Rich Men North Of Richmond' 0.5/10

A pretty rough week here, only voting for Fred and even that is not exactly instantly one of my favourite songs from him although I can see it growing on me further, almost has a bit of a Sigala feel to it but like... before Sigala became unbearably generic. Nice vocals from Obongjayar and I do quite like the Big Freedia-esque chanty parts. 'My Story' certainly doesn't need to be 9 and a half minutes long, I wish it at least had a beat/flow switch at some point to justify it a bit more but they are pretty good even if unchanging thoughout and it has its moments lyrically (although the line 'I might grab the Rolls like I need a poo' is a bit jarringly out of place in an otherwise very serious song!), not one I particularly feel the need to go back to though. The other Fredo song sure does exist doesn't it? I quite like the hook of 'bad idea right?' but that's about it, I find the verses a little cringe to be honest, it just feels like a pretty subpar attempt to emulate Wet Leg, hoping there's better stuff on the album. As for the other three... I don't mind Potter Payper's verse and Digga D's second verse on 'Facade' and the beat is decent but that first verse and the hook are so bad that it tanks the whole song, Digga in prime 'can't go 2 lines without saying something that makes my eyes roll' mode. I don't get why so many people think 'Ferrari Horses' is one of DBE's best songs, it's actually one of their worst imo, and surprise surprise slapping a generic dance beat under it doesn't make it much better, I guess the instrumental could make for an ok song if it didn't have the cringeworthy lyrics over it. It feels like a bit of an amateurish remix as well really, and I'm almost sure the second minute of it is literally just the first minute repeated. The nicest thing I can say is that it does improve on the original by at least leaving out the god awful attempt at falsetto. The Oliver Anthony Music thing is a solid 0/10 for the discourse and the song doesn't even sound good oops, I saved it from a flat 0/10 because I do quite like the folksy aesthetic but those vocals good lord, I feel like I'm being punched in the ears repeatedly. And the less said about the lyrics the better (and I don't even mean just the controversial ones, when he's not saying something stupid he's instead being awkwardly inarticulate).

Week 34:

1 'Incredible Sauce' 9/10

2 'Damage Gets Done' 7.5/10

3 'DNA (Loving You)' 7/10

At least this week makes up in quality what it lacks in quantity! Not a lot to say about these 3 really, love the instrumental on 'Incredible Sauce' and Giggs and Dave both do their thing over it, the instrumental and harmonies on the Hozier song are really nice (I think that one will be a grower like 'Eat Your Young' was) and Billy Gillies song is another pretty good if not hugely distinct trance throwback, I was close to giving a vote to all 3 of these but just voting for the top 2 for now, I could see 'DNA (Loving You)' growing on me more as well though.

Week 35:

1 'I Remember Everything' 9.5/10

2 'From The Start' 7.5/10

3 'City Boys' 6.5/10

4 'Meridian' 6.5/10

5 'Cheat On Me' 6/10

6 'Lonely At The Top' 6/10

7 'Mrs Lonely' 5.5/10

8 'Party All The Time' 5.5/10

9 'Single Soon' 5/10

10 'Drinkin'' 3.5/10

11 'Used To Be Young' 3/10

And then unfortunately back to a week I don't have a lot of love for although it's better than week 33 at least - the Zach/Kacey song is really beautiful though so that's at least providing the standout from this set of polls, really hope that can go on to become a solid hit here. Need to check out the rest of Zach's album as I've enjoyed everything I've heard from him so far including clips of a few other songs from this album, really shocked I am becoming such a fan of a country artist! Laufey also gets a vote just about, it's a very tasteful and pleasant song injecting a nice bit of diversity into the chart and gotta love an Icelandic breakthrough artist x All 3 of the afrobeats (ish) entries of the week are on about the same level of being a bit of a vibe but also instantly forgettable, it's certainly one of Asake's weaker songs for me and unfortunately 'Big 7' looks to be an outlier for me in a Burna Boy era I'm otherwise not stanning (unless you count 'Talibans II' as well). The first minute of 'Meridian' is pretty boring but it gets going when they start rapping, good verses from both of them but doesn't quite save the song to any better than 'pretty good' for me. The Bugzy song is tacky but I think it just about falls on the right side of fun vs. cringe. Hannah Laing's take on 'Party All The Time' is passable enough but like... we already did this with Sharam, we don't need another (not as good) dance remake of it. This Selena Gomez song sure does exist doesn't it? This Joel Corry song sure does exist doesn't it? This Miley Cyrus song sure does exist doesn't it? (and is also kind of eye rolling adult contemporary snoozefest, I hope the lyrics of this song aren't hinting that this is the style of music she's making from now on, you're still allowed to be fun Miley x)

My votes are not matching the results very well in any of these polls x
