June 7Jun 7 Omg did Amazing Digital Circus actually manage it with just a 4 day limited release?? I assume it’s that and Mando?
June 7Jun 7 Went to see MOTU today and the cinema was packed! Nice to see more attendance at cinemas lately.
June 7Jun 7 Scary Movie no.1 global movie with an estimated 5.5m here.105m total which now means Scary Movie Franchise in its opening weekend alone joins the billion dollar club! Only the 7th horror franchise to do so.Obsession finally decreased in the US but only in its 4th week and by just 7%. Edited June 7Jun 7 by Henessy Lake
June 8Jun 8 I can’t believe Scary Movie 6 made less on its opening week than what Backrooms did here Edited June 8Jun 8 by Hadji

(07) Tuner - £433,924 (+20%) Weeks: 2 (£1,092,879)Falling out:The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (9 weeks)Power Ballad (1 week)Passenger (2 weeks)I teased it yesterday but three debuts and strong holdovers mean that we have 7-films passing £1 million for the first time since July 2017 when ‘Dunkirk’ held at #1 with £8,235,532 while ‘Cars 3’ was at #7 on its third week with £1,013,547. This week sees three debuts all at the top with the winner being ‘Scary Movie’ (£4,188,570). This is a great result for a comedy as the genre has struggled on the big screen in recent years. The last comedy to open bigger was ‘Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy’ (£12,298,966, #1) in February last year. The sixth entry in the franchise, this is the biggest debut for the franchise yet, beating ‘Scary Movie 3’ (£3,490,585, #1) from all the way back in 2004. In fact, this opening is above the full gross of ‘Scary Movie V’ which only closed with £2.5 million in 2013. This should end up becoming the biggest movie overall but it will need to reach the £10.5 million of the first ‘Scary Movie’ from 2000. The return of the Wayan Brothers and originally stars Anna Faris and Regina Hall has been a masterstroke. I love the first three films but this one looks atrocious so I’m a bit dismayed at its success. It would have only been #5 without previews but opening early has helped YouTube sensation ‘The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act’ (£2,684,963, £1.8 million without previews) debut at #2. This is the final two episodes of the darkly comic/horror Australian animation series which debuted on YouTube in 2023 before being added to Netflix. It’s about a group of humans who get trapped in a virtual circus. I’d literally never heard of it before this week but you can’t help but be impressed by those numbers. Along with the success of ‘Iron Lung’ earlier in the year and ‘Backrooms’ last week, we’re starting to see YouTube become a major force in Hollywood and Gen Z being tempted to the big screen which can only be a brilliant thing for cinemas. The final new entry really highlights the swing in cinema habits of the new generation and is ‘Masters Of The Universe’ (£2,654,784, £2.1 million without previews) at #3. Coming from director Travis Knight this a rough opening for a film whose budget is somewhere in the $175-200 million range. Based on the popular Mattel 80s toy range, this is the second attempt to make the film a franchise after 1987’s cult classic of the same name. This is the third feature from Knight who has already gained a reputation for making really well-received films that underperform against their budget with his past efforts ‘Kubo And The Two Strings’ making $78 million worldwide against a $60 million budget and ‘Bumblebee’ being the lowest-grossing ‘Transformers’ film at $460 million. I wouldn’t worry about him too much though; he is the son of Nike co-founder Phil Knight and is a billionaire. The toys were famously made by Matel after they rejected the opportunity to make Star Wars toys and we’re left with egg on their face after that became the biggest franchise of all-time. So it’s quite poetic that this is struggling at the same time as ‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian And Grogu’ which loses 48% in week 3 as it drops all the way to #6. I’m now not sure it’s even going to have enough to beat ‘Solo’ and not be the worst-performing live-action Star Wars film. ‘Star Wars’ and He-Man are both being shown up by the two horrors films made on budgets of $1 million and $10 million. ‘Obsession’ climbs again (22%) in week 4 to have its best weekend yet with just under £2 million. With £10 million in the bank already, it is the biggest horror of the year so far and should do enough next week to outgross last year’s ‘Weapons’ (£11.8 million) which felt like an insane performance in itself. ‘’Backrooms’ opened bigger and isn’t quite showing the same legs but when you made that much in week 1, a 47% drop is nothing to be sniffed at and a total over £8.5 million in two weekends is also crazy for a low-budget, independent horror. It’s now A24’s biggest hit in the UK, overtaking the £6 million gross of Best Picture winner ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’. With these legacy 80s blockbusters being embarrassed by small, independent horrors, it really feels like this week is the passing of the torch and we’ve entered a new era of the box office. It’s such an exciting time and it’s going to be fascinating to see how Hollywood, and the massive studios, react. The seventh-and-final film to make £1 million+ was ‘Michael’ in week 7. To only drop 23%, despite the massive competition is brilliant and helps it pass a massive milestone in £50 million. It’s the 54th film to do so in the UK and the £55 million of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is feeling closer and closer. ‘Tuner’ deserves a lot of praise too as its expansion sees it climb 20% in business (+54% without previews), despite the 3-place fall in the chart. It has already passed £1 million in total which is a great result for any small-budget UK film. The final two holders: ‘The Sheep Detectives’ (-23%) and ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ (-38%) both land within £1k of each other. There are four further new entries in the #11-15 section: ‘Peddi’ (#11), ‘Savage House’ (#13), ‘Mollywood’ (#14) and ‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’ (#15). Next week sees the openings of ‘Disclosure Day’, ‘Solo Mio’, ‘Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway’ and ‘The Fall Of Sir Douglas Weatherford’. We also see a re-release of ‘Boogie Nights’, ‘Strictly Ballroom’ and ‘Pink Narcissus’. Can any of them top the charts?~Travis Knight openings:Kubo And The Two Strings (£844,027, #5, 2016)Bumblebee (£5,103,382, #2, 2018)Masters Of The Universe (£2,654,784, #3, 2026)_Summer Box Office Top 5:1. (01) The Devil Wears Prada 2 - £33,330,2242. (02) Star Wars: The Mandalorian And Grogu - £13,987,3873. (04) Obsession - £10,333,5174. (03) The Sheep Detectives - £9,233,9575. (05) Backrooms - £8,651,881Same top 5 as last week but Obsession overtakes The Sheep Detectives with Backrooms not far behind.

I’d heard about it a few years back, but only watched it for the first time at the weekend and watched all the episodes of it on Netflix in one sitting, it’s pretty great viewing. Will wait until it’s on streaming until I see this one though.
June 8Jun 8 That is seriously good for the Amazing Digital Circus, I know it has been a big viral hit but I wasn't sure how much that would translate into UK cinemas as this did strike me as a treat for the fans and is rather niche. You can watch all the episodes free on YouTube and this one comes out on June 19th so I'd recommend it to anyone interested, it helps Glitch fight the good fight for independent animation. It's got a lot of mystery and existentialism and some quite horrifying moments, I was quite surprised to see a lot of children in the screening xIntrigued as to how Disclosure Day will do next week, does seem to be marketed as the first big Spielberg blockbuster in the vein of Close Encounters... and Jurassic Park.
June 8Jun 8 Just about everyone over performed (Scary Movie under and Masters Of The Universe bang on) my predictions!I thought 'Backrooms' would have a bigger drop tbh. 'Obsession' INCREASING for another week and in its 4th weekend... CRAZY! DAMN that hot weather in its 2nd week causing it to dip 4% and not bagging a 3rd consecutive week of increase! Hoping 'Obsession' can overtake 'Backrooms' next weekend.'The Amazing Digital Circus' did INCREDIBLY well! Really stunned by those numbers - I thought the limited release would hinder it a bit!

Thursday at 22:455 days oh damn Amazing Digital Circus KILLED it obviously the show's been a pretty big deal for a few years already (certainly in my bubble at least, the only one that matters~), but still feels kinda wild that it's able to compete on that level with the major studio releases. It's been cool to see indie animated webseries crossing over to theatres lately - like BFDI (obligatory shoutout x) with its limited one-day releases and now Digital Circus smashing on a worldwide scale, more of this pls!
Saturday at 09:044 days I’d literally never heard of the amazing digital circus until maybe a week or so ago (probably because of this thread 😂). Guess it’s not really my kinda thing though which is probably why. But credit where it’s due, it really did smash it!I must be getting old

(08) The Sheep Detectives - £230,729 (-58%) Weeks: 6 (£9,587,151)Falling out:The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act (1 week)Tuner (2 weeks)After the craziness of last weekend, the World Cup has now kicked off and we’ve been brought back down to earth with a slow weekend. The first time in a while which we’ve been down on the equivalent weekend of last year (although only by 1%). The winner is ‘Disclosure Day’ £5,504,987, £3.9 million without previews). Coming from the most celebrated director of all-time, Steven Spielberg, the promotion for this film gave little away aside from the fact that it’s a return to the alien sub-genre and has rewarded him with his fifth strongest opener. With previews, it’s the best opening since ‘The BFG’ ((£5,288,529, #1) in 2016 but it’s three-day gross is also behind ‘Ready Player One’ (£5,113,041, #2, 2018). I’m not sure how this is going to hold because audience reaction has been mixed at best. The only other new entry this week is ‘BTS World tour ‘ARIRANG’ in Busan: Live Viewing’ (£291,042, #7). This is coming off the back of the consecutive releases the band had in April on their long-awaited return where ‘Goyang’ (£336,475, #6) and ‘Japan’ (£203,738, #8) both reached the top 10. It’s fitting that this opened between the two films and then peaked between them too. ‘Obsession’ continues to impress, reaching a new peak of #2 despite a 21% drop in business. It’s done more this weekend than it did on weekend 1 or 2 which shows just how good the word-of-mouth has been. With £13.4 million, it has passed ‘Nosferatu’ (£12.9 million) when it comes to horrors from last year with only ‘Sinners’ (£16.8 million) and ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ (£18.3 million) doing better. After 7-films did it last week, the third-and-final film to gross £1 million+ this weekend is ‘Scary Movie’ that loses top spot after shredding 66% in week 2. With £7.2 million, it’s already up to #3 in the ‘Scary Movie’ franchise and is within striking distance of last year’s ‘The Naked Gun’ (£7.6 million) when it comes to reboots of classic parody franchises. It has a weekend of big drops overall with ‘Backroom’s holding at #4 despite losing 57%. But it has become the 13th film to pass £10 million so far this year, just creeping ahead of ‘The Drama’ to be A24’s big hit of the year. ‘The Sheep Detectives’ just about holds on in the top 10 with a 58% drop and is edging closer to becoming the latest addition to the £10 million+ club. Aside from ‘Obsession’, the only other film to drop less than 50% is ‘Michael’ which loses 46% while ‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian And Grogu’ continues to fade without a trace, losing 64% as it still hasn’t hit £15 million after a month in cinemas. ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ drops 56% in week 7. ‘Masters Of The Universe’ is not showing much strength either. Dropping 67% (59% without previews), it is up to £4.3 million but doesn’t look like it will get much higher. It’s better than ‘Mortal Kombat II’ at least. For anyone interested, ‘The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act’ drops to #11 with a 92% drop and is still just short of £3 million in total. There is one further new entry in the #11-15 section: Main Vaapas Aaunga’ (#14). Monday at 20:591 day Very surprised that “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” was Spielberg’s highest opening for a film in the UK, and that “Lost World” in the 90s was higher than some of his high-profile 2010s films with inflation adjustment. I’m guessing Jurassic Park is probably his biggest adjusted for inflation?
