November 22, 20232 yr We don't celebrate thanks giving a bit like how America don't celebrate the 5th of November. I wouldn’t have guessed!
November 22, 20232 yr Ooh I forgot about the Beatles, hopefully they drop out for Tate. She could do let it be, they could never do exes or greedy. 🤣🤣
November 22, 20232 yr Ridiculous that Emeli Sande is not top 40 She is a victim of being popular because the general public liked her but not having a hardcore fanbase. The general public are fickle and if you lose them and haven't got that fanbase to fall back on you are screwed. Though it is probably her own fault for being so bland as a person that doesn't really warrant people getting overly attached to her and becoming big fans.
November 22, 20232 yr The continued success of 'Our Version of Events' was largely due to 'Read All About it' being performed ad nauseum everywhere including the Olympics and then 'Clown' being a big X Factor song plus of course 'Next to Me'. Largely right place large right time. But no real love for her as a person. My favourite tracks of hers were the Naughty Boy collaborations 'Wonder' and 'Lifted' but they sadly were no way as big as 'La La La'
November 22, 20232 yr She was a one album wonder at the end of the day. I’d barely call her a one-album wonder as the follow up did peak at #2. It seems that all her albums under the Virgin label went top 10 and the ones under the Chrysalis label missed the top 10
November 22, 20232 yr The second album only produced one middling hit single (and one other that scraped the low top 100 for a couple of weeks) and had a fraction of the longevity of her debut though.
November 23, 20232 yr She also went away for almost 4 years between the first and second album, which is basically a lifetime in pop. Second album was essentially her equivalent of "Endlessly" in terms of how it performed compared to the debut. Edited November 23, 20232 yr by Jessie Where

It seems that all her albums under the Virgin label went top 10 and the ones under the Chrysalis label missed the top 10 I mean Brer has already said it but that #2 peak is a red herring if we're talking about how impactful it was to her career. If you ask an average member of the public to name an Emeli Sande song I guarantee you it will be from Our Version Of Events. Probably followed by "whatever happened to her?" :kink:

November 23, 20232 yr I think I'm in minority here but good to see Paul Russell top 40 in the singles chart. I really hope Madness are safe as number 1 album this week.
November 23, 20232 yr Wonder how close is Long Live the angels to Platinum  I have it on 288K so must be close to platinum Emeli sande is the typical example of what happens to many UK female singers sadly :/ You can get a million or even 2 million selling debut, next one no one cares
November 23, 20232 yr Cant believe Xmas songs are already invading the top10... its November people! We also have a song called cruel summer in top 10 its almost the end of autumn :P

To have exceptional 10+ year mainstream success it seems it's far better to have a just a sucessful debut. I was thinking through all the biggest pop acts and 90% peaked with their 2nd, 3rd, 4th album. For Emeli Sande to do that would be almost impossible because her first one was too big. The ones who are huge out of the gate and dominate straightaway just decline from then on (and really for them it becomes about just making the decline as slow as possible rather than trying to get more successful). And some of them decline insanely fast. I can only think of a few who go against the trend and it's usually because they have a slow decline + a semi-comeback later in their career which makes it last long.

November 23, 20232 yr Emeli Sandé only has herself to blame for her dwindling fortunes. Her second album came out in November 2016. Her debut album came out in February 2012. That's almost five years—a death wish for a new artist. I'm surprised her record label allowed her to take that long. It was a similar story with Natalie Imbruglia, who took four years to follow up Left of the Middle. It doesn't help that Emeli is a bit bland. There's nothing about her that stands out. Leona Lewis is the same. Personality is important in pop.
