Belatedly giving Fred a UK top 10 hit this year was this track which was very deservingly so as it is also his highest charting in this year’s rundown. The track with vocals from Nigerian performer Obonjayar was written in tribute to both performers siblings. With its uplifting lyrics, bouncy beat and unexpected middle section it’s certainly one of the more interesting hit songs of the year.

Breaking their streak of getting one massive hit per year, Shouse put out two releases this year with ‘Your Love’ being the second of these. Featuring some robotic vocals which build into a harmonious choir performance it keeps the same vibe of their first two hits which made this an instant success for me although ultimately it fell off fairly quickly as I played out those two over 100 times each already.

Yass for 'Cha Cha Cha' being deservedly the highest Eurovision song but I do approve of 'Queen Of Kings' and 'Tattoo' as well (albeit the latter taking a while to grow on me), Nordics came through this year. Also greatly approving of 'Sprinter' and 'TRUSTFALL' among the mainstream picks in the top 100 so far (certain others not quite as much x) and ofc BLACKSHAPE was a very standout BJSC entry and deserved smash.

I wasn't that fond of the Blackout Crew remix really, the song is better left without any rapping.

I can accept 'Paradox' DNQing but I reckon 'Southern Trees' could've gone top 20 if it managed to scrape past that semi, that was definitely robbed a bit. Though not quite as robbed as another DNQ of mine that'll end up a lot higher in the countdown.

I didn't like the Jorja cover of 'Stay Another Day' whatsoever but I'm also not keen on the original version.

Glad you enjoyed the Eurovision songs here, hopefully we get at least one of that quality in 2024 although I think having as many as three huge standouts like that will only happen once in a generation.

There'll be at least one more mainstream pick to come that'll definitely get the Bré sideeye oop (but it's a bop!)

 

'Cha Cha Cha' and 'Tattoo' are both great so a worthy top 2 in Eurovision.

For me I did find 'Euphoria' good but overrated by many oops but 'Tattoo' has been able to separate itself from the same fate albeit it did keep growing post contest as evident by it hanging around my chart for a while!

 

'Ready To Fly' is quite good. 'So Much In Love' started off fine but grated in the end.

 

'Anti-Hero' is still fab as well. Oh and I missed 'Trustfall' in my previous comments. A great track from P!nk and a nice change of sound for her too. Pleased it was a hit and deserved to be in the official End of Year chart too!

It was quite unprecedented we had two songs as big as Cha Cha and Tattoo in the same contest, both songs really deserved to go down as winners, though at least Cha Cha won the public vote.

It was really great to have P!nk give us at least one more late-stage career pop banger yes.

Breaking through this year we had British duo Switch Disco who first got popular online for doing mash-ups. Unsurprisingly as such this contained a heavy sample of one of the biggest dance song ever, being ‘Children’ of course, with Ella Henderson lengthening her chart career again by jumping on. It was the year’s biggest sleeper hit in my chart ultimately never cracking the top 40, and it’s not even my favourite ‘Children’ re-do of the decade (hi Tinlicker) but the sample sure helped with its replay value.

Having already been a minor hit upon its release last year, ‘Take This’ had a second life in the chart following ASOT London, the one music event I attended this year. Bryan Kearney was one of the trance DJs there with this being used in his set. It’s a very emotional trance record, originally written by husband-wife duo OotD about marital issues that saw them divorce and later re-unite, that was also voted tune of the year 2022 by listeners of Armin’s radio show.

A collaboration here between two acts who were already rather popular with fans of alternative dance music, however this is what was needed to give them a crossover hit for my chart. A very fun bouncy tune here inspired by early 00s bops and lower-case future nostalgia. It managed to place on the R1 playlist but was clearly too interesting for mainstream streaming playlists’ liking so has to settle for being a cult hit.

2022: Another one for Gareth Emery now - it is also the first of two to feature vocals from Annabel, who'd previously guested on the entire of his previous album. It's another track that leans towards dance-pop like the majority of the album but done in Emery's unique way. Initially a slow-burning top 10 hit, the album release belatedly gave it a #2 peak.

This one proved to have a lot more legs than I ever expected, it is fairly unique for one of his songs anyhow which must’ve helped. A lovely song and his 2nd highest appearance this year.

Taken as the closing track from Gareth’s final album ‘Analog’ the song is a celebration of how far he’s come along in his career and a call for the fans to live in the moment. As the most trancey song on the record along with the lyrical impact it was an easy standout upon its release, with elements of classic Emery all throughout. Another track that got assisted by a BJSC appearance now, we have DJ Heartstring - who confusingly enough are a duo based in Berlin. An energetic techno-trance crossover here, the driving beat and demanding vocal really make it stand out in its field. One of the most-loved songs of the year across the UK now, deservedly giving Raye a huge hit and finally her first one as a lead performer. As a very interesting and emotional story telling song with a great vocal performance it quickly grew for me once it started taking off. The rest of the album was solid but nothing else stood out in quite the same way, and for non-EDM UK chart toppers this would be very tough to beat.

2022: Now we get to an electronic act I didn't think we'd ever hear from again. Having put out their "final album" in 2014, Röyksopp casually released their best song yet in 'Never Ever' before disappearing altogether, besides a release dump of old out-takes in 2019. But then like SHM it seemed their supposed retirement was just a lengthy hiatus and a three-part album series ended up happening. Now reuniting with Susanne Sundfør who assisted on their previous biggest-hit, 'Oh, Lover' returned them both to the top three. A fantastic synthpop record here this is anyhow, and one that holds up very well with repeat listens so expect this to end up in next year's chart too.

2022: The top track for Grum now, after having had 'Afterglow' reach the year-end top five in 2020, he does it again with 'Don't Look Down' - both tracks with Natalie Shay on vocals. Likewise this is a big synthy progressive track, and a natural successor to their previous #1 stylistically. Assisted by its 80s synthpop influence, tension build and release and a great vocal performance - this was a track that once it had enough listens to grow on me proper it remained fresh for the rest of the year and beyond - it's now back in my top 10 from the year-end boost. Even if 'Look to the Light' ultimately proved to be stronger this remains a real triumph for Grum and would have made a worthy BJSC entry if 'Light' wasn't put out.

First of two for Calvin Harris. After starting the pop-trance revival with ‘Miracle’ he put out a worthy follow-up in ‘Desire’ which was also his second collab with Sam Smith. Ultimately the first one ‘Promises’ held up better and I hope Calvin switches the sound up a little more for the next release but this is great anyhow - the unexpected drop synth lead is a nice touch.

That triple Röyksopp appearance *.* 'Oh, Lover' in particular is an absolute stunner so I'm pleased to see that in your top 50 :wub: in fact, that and 'Escapism.' is such a strong back-to-back, agreed the storytelling on the latter is so brilliantly done. 'Anti-Hero' was another very good chart topper in recent times, would agree it's right up there in Taylor's discography.

 

Loving the Eurovision impact so far! 'Cha Cha Cha' ended up being my favourite entry this year as the live performances sold the hell out of it, amazing that we got a Finnish language hit in the official chart. Speaking of contests... 'ITIIITIATIIHYLIHYL' and 'Voryva' were both massive BJSC standouts for me too, the former I gave 15 and the latter 18 :wub:

Now for another inspired choice of song to remake this time a 00s French language hit from Kate Ryan which was beefed up this year by Oliver Heldens. Self-describing the genre as 'EuroRave' it has more of a thump to it than the typical release of his (outside of his techno alias). I wasn't overly familiar with the original anyhow but for those who are, most of the elements from it are kept in - it's a welcome update anyhow.

Also great to see 'Happiness' sneak into your top 200. Too may others to mention outside the top 100, but within it my other faves are: 'ITII...' (deserved BJSC smash), 'Ready To Fly' (awesome DnB / hardcore switch-ups), 'Tattoo' (deserved huge ESC winner and lengthy chart hit crossover), 'Make Me Happy' (really thought that could have taken off for Patrick at a similar time to 'Good Love' for Hannah), 'Serotonin Moonbeams' (joyous), 'It Ain't Over' (techno banger), 'Escapism.' (hits hard every time) and both Röyksopp / Susanne collabs (haunting epics)!

That triple Röyksopp appearance *.* 'Oh, Lover' in particular is an absolute stunner so I'm pleased to see that in your top 50 :wub: in fact, that and 'Escapism.' is such a strong back-to-back, agreed the storytelling on the latter is so brilliantly done. 'Anti-Hero' was another very good chart topper in recent times, would agree it's right up there in Taylor's discography.

 

Loving the Eurovision impact so far! 'Cha Cha Cha' ended up being my favourite entry this year as the live performances sold the hell out of it, amazing that we got a Finnish language hit in the official chart. Speaking of contests... 'ITIIITIATIIHYLIHYL' and 'Voryva' were both massive BJSC standouts for me too, the former I gave 15 and the latter 18 :wub:

 

Mitski has got to be one of my favourite commercial breakthroughs of the year alongside Peggy Gou! I'm glad you were a fan despite that kind of stuff not always being your cup of tea ^_^

Well sometimes I just can't deny a really lazy dance remake! This one is a straight cover of the 1979 hit by Eruption, given an additional house groove to modernise it. I wasn't overly familiar with the original version (which sounds pretty much like a Boney M song) so that helped it stay fresh for a while. The hook here is amazingly catchy anyhow, it's peak disco.
