BuzzJack's favourite top 100 hit for 2023 week 44 and auto-qualifying for the November monthly round is The Beatles - Now And Then.

BuzzJack's favourite top 100 hit for 2023 week 45 and auto-qualifying for the November monthly round is Olivia Rodrigo - Can't Catch Me Now.

Week 44's poll is a win for an obscure little British band from back in the day called The Beatles - I had thought the fact this debuted a week early due to 10 hours of download sales might cost it a poll win but I couldn't have been more wrong as not only did it win, it actually got fewer votes than the winner in the other poll! The track, which serves as the group's final official single, finally released decades after the original attempts to polish the original Lennon demo it's based on were abandoned and would become their 18th UK #1 in its first full week, got the support of over 60% of voters here to take a pretty comfortable win, 8 votes ahead of the most supported of Taylor Swift's 3 debuts. Taylor's songs land in the poll results in the same order as their official chart positions with the top 2 both reaching the double digit vote mark in 2nd and 4th, 'Now That We Don't Talk' being pipped to 3rd place by 1 vote by Chase And Status and Clementine Douglas. Taylor was thus denied becoming the first artist to notch 4 poll wins - but from week 45 that honour instead goes to fellow American female soloist Olivia Rodrigo who got a vote from nearly 75% of participants for her soundtrack cut from the new Hunger Games prequel film (which has so far earned a top 15 peak but may hopefully go top 10 in the new year) to easily follow the 3 charting singles from 'GUTS' to poll victory. 'Can't Catch Me Now' got more than twice as many votes as its nearest competition, the only other song to break double figures from this week which throws us back to 2011 as a TikTok trend has seen Childish Gambino's 'Heartbeat' finally become a low top 100 hit.

Only two songs from week 44 fall short of the 5 vote mark, with it being another L for UK rap for Unknown T and Digga D picking up just 2 votes in last place while Elley Duhé and Whethan land just ahead with 4 votes. I kind of love that one of Taylor's songs got fewer votes than 'This Is Halloween' (I voted for both of them but still). There are more also-rans in week 45, before my votes The Kid LAROI has been set to be in last place with only 1 vote which would be extremely undeserved imo, he instead gets joint last place on 2 votes as just as many people saw fit to dignify Lil Mabu's even more cringeworthy second hit. Ok then. Also deserving better was indie country artist Dylan Gossett who finished just ahead with 3 votes (again being tied with Lil Mabu before my votes -_-) and Teddy Swims also fell short with 4 votes.

3 in 1 poll this week but it's effectively only a 2 in 1 because week 48 only has the one new entry - that poll is just for fun, Ryder and Skepta will take a most likely very undeserved spot as a December auto-qualifier regardless but it's still up for the vote so people can either approve it or protest with a null vote.

For the two polls with actual competition (the other two November charts), we run into the slight issue of Amazon exclusive Christmas songs which are therefore obviously not included in the Spotify playlist below - I think if there are any YouTube uploads of these they'll likely get taken down very quickly so I won't bother linking to them here but luckily they were both played on the chart show so I can link to them via iPlayer timestamps :magic: (I'm not sure I'll be able to do the same for Meghan Trainor in the more recent chart but we'll deal with that next week).

edit: Jorja now has an official YouTube link available which I've linked instead.

edit 2: and now so does Sam so no iPlayer jank needed any more!

Out of what I have been able to include, week 46 has 14 tracks totalling 45 minutes and 39 seconds (I only included the Hozier version of 'Northern Attitude' as it was the clear driver of the song's charting but the original solo version did contribute as well, while the Mazza L20 song has a bunch of different remixes but I've only included the Aitch/Potter Payper remix which made an appearance in the Apple Music chart and the original which remains the most streamed on Spotify overall) and week 47 has 5 tracks totalling 16 minutes flat. And then week 48 is just the one song at 2 minutes and 39 seconds.

Olivia Rodrigo has the opportunity to get a 5th poll win, although for once she probably isn't the favourite this time thanks to a certain Ms. Lipa.

For Amazon exclusive Christmas songs:

Vote for as many or as few songs as you want and would be ideal if you can make sure you've heard all the songs before voting if possible!

Will aim to get the next poll up on Monday night / Tuesday morning and that'll be another 2 in 1 poll to bring us back up to date at last :jump:

Week 46

Jack Harlow - Lovin On Me (#1) - a TUNE

Dua Lipa - Houdini (#2) - last minute in particular of this is exceptional

Noah Kahan and Hozier - Northern Attitude (#16) - the first song of his i've liked! even Hozier's parts are good

Mazza L20 - Murdaside (Remix w/ Aitch and Potter Payper / original feat. Pistol Po) (#18) - is this a HAZEY alter ego? it's a good one all the same

PinkPantheress - Nice to meet you (feat. Central Cee) (#20) - some really slick production on this, her best song in a while

Chase And Status - Selecta (feat. Stefflon Don) (#27) - inspired sample and another c&s banger

Chris Brown - Angel Numbers / Ten Toes (#41) - a very ambitious project from Breezy but i think he pulls it off!

Stray Kids - LALALALA (#44) - an annoying mess

David Guetta and Kim Petras - When We Were Young (The Logical Song) (#51) - this isn't actually terrible but i wouldn't put it on

Chris Brown - Nightmares (feat. Byron Messia) (#73) - another decent one but it's lacking a punch

Olivia Rodrigo - all-american bitch (#78) - this is much better rockier effort from her and better than the embarrassing second and third singles

Sam Ryder - You're Christmas To Me (#88) - a boundless beacon of joy and energy

Noah Kahan - You're Gonna Go Far (#92) - back to the doldrums for you sir

The Weeknd, JENNIE and Lily-Rose Depp - One Of The Girls (#100) - slow and sluggish never wins the race

What a week! Best week of the year. Voted Jack, Dua, Noah, Mazza, PP, C&S, Chris, O-Rod and Sam.

Week 47

Tate McRae - exes (#12) - pretty mediocre and all on one level

Drake - You Broke My Heart (#26) - it's not a highlight but it's still top shelf

Eliza Rose and Calvin Harris - Body Moving (#48) - boring production and weird af vocals

J.I.D - Surround Sound (feat. 21 Savage and Baby Tate) (#64) - what a nothingy song, and why is jid trying to sound like q-tip

Jorja Smith - Stay Another Day (#75) - um no, and it's not a christmas song

Sabrina Carpenter - Feather (#87) - painfully vanilla

Just Drizzy from this sorry batch.

Week 48

Ryder and Skepta - #skeptacore pt.3 (#88) - it's not lyrically great and there's nothing to the production

Sorry buddy you ain't gettin' my vote. Null time!

46: went for Jack, Noah x2 and Sam.

47: Eliza, JID and Sabrina (the variety hehe).

48: went for “don’t like this” - actually I didn’t dislike it but it wasn’t at the level at which I’d choose it in a busier week.

Looks like Jorja Smith read my complaint about her song not being on YouTube as she now dropped a music video :magic:

Still no official upload of the Sam Ryder track though (aside from a live performance) so keeping the iPlayer link for that but now linked the Jorja video in the OP x

Week 46: Dua Lipa, Noah Kahan & Hozier, PinkPantheress & Central Cee, Chase & Status X Stefflon Don & The Weeknd X Lily Rose Depp X JENNIE

Week 47: Tate McRae, Drake & JID X 21 Savage X Baby Tate

13. Chris Brown - Nightmares (feat. Byron Messia)

14. Stray Kids - LALALALA

Votiing for my top 4 this week.

'Houdini' might not be to the levels of the singles from 'Future Nostalgia' but it's still an exciting comeback from Dua. 'All-American Bitch' is definitely one of the highlights from the 'Guts' album tracks. I'm so happy that 'One Of The Girls' has given Jennie a second top 100 hit. 'Murdaside' is the biggest winner from the delay to these polls and I wouldn't have voted for it then. Maybe it's just 'HAZEY' that sounds awful in terms of scouse rap as 'Still Brickin' and 'Mazza L20' have both sounded pretty good in their charting hits.

'Nice to meet you' has grown on me a but it's just PinkPantheress & Central Cee on auto-pilot. 'Ten Toes' has some life from 'AN/TT' but it sounds like a filler album track. 'Lovin On Me' is ok but too repetitive 'about ya boy' in very line in the verse is irritating.

'You're Gonna Go Far' is the pick of the Noah tracks but feels like it's missing a big chorus to allow it to really connect. I was expecting to dislike 'When We Were Young' but I didn't. Kim’s vocals on the verses are great.

'Selecta' is very nothingy, 'You're Christmas To Me' sounds just as cheap as all of the Amazon Christmas exclusives, 'Nightmares' is short but feels like it goes on forever and I really dislike the vocals on 'LALALALA'.

Week 47

1. J.I.D - Surround Sound (feat. 21 Savage and Baby Tate)

2. Tate McRae - exes

3. Sabrina Carpenter - Feather

4. Drake - You Broke My Heart

5. Eliza Rose and Calvin Harris - Body Moving

6. Jorja Smith - Stay Another Day

What a week! The top 3 are all among my favourite charting songs of the year. 'Surround Sound' was one of the best songs of 2022, Sabrina is one of my favourite pop-stars and 'Feather' was easily the best from her deluxe tracks she released for her album this year and 'exes' is another huge bop from Tate.

'You Broke My Heart' is slightly more energetic than the average Drake album track of recent times. 'Body Moving' appeals to me more than 'BOTA' but still not the sort of thing I'd listen to.

I usually adore Jorja Smith's voice but she sounds so bad on 'Stay Another Day'. I really don't get what's happened there.

~

I don't think the instrumental really works with Skepta's rapping on '#skeptacore pt.3' but it's not bad enough for me not to give it a vote seeming that it's the only track here.

Ah we have an official video for Sam now too so edited that link into the OP as well!

(Now let's hope Meghan Trainor does the same in the next few days :P)

Week 46: voted Dua, Noah x2 and Jason Status. A few others came close - I liked Olivia's song when the album came out but I think other tracks have held up better, and being the flagship of the annual Alexa-play-Christmas-music assault hasn't helped Sam's song in my affections but it's a decent effort.

Week 47: Eliza just about got my vote (anything to lift the curse).

Week 48: null - wow at this beating the actual song by more than 3:1, it would surely end up with a lower vote percentage than some of the non-qualifiers in a normal month, although the competition will be a bit odd with it being December.

Week 46

01. Dua Lipa - Houdini (#2)

02. Olivia Rodrigo - all-american bitch (#78)

03. Sam Ryder - You're Christmas To Me (#88)

04. Noah Kahan and Hozier - Northern Attitude (#16)
