18TH JULY

The top 2 refuse to budge this week with the Pet Shop Boys grabbing a third week on top and only seeing their lead cut marginally by Bruce Willis to 30,000 as they sold 76,347 copies to Willis’ 46,257, both are now in noticeable decline though which sets up an interesting battle for next week given what’s occurring at No 3 this week.

Yes she’s back with a new film hitting the cinema in September called “Who’s That Girl?”, a tour which sees her arrive in the UK for the first time (to tour anyway) in August and now a new single “Who’s That Girl?” which debuts at No 3 (44,846) for Madonna. It’s her fourth single in a row to debut straight into the top 10, her 7th to do the feat in total and Madonna’s 15th Top 10 single which of course means that she now has more top 10 singles in the 80s than any other act, and has sold more singles than anyone else in the decade bar the mighty Shakin’ Stevens who advances 26-13 this week and could pull one back again as soon as next week. The soundtrack is out in a fortnight and contains tracks not only by Madonna but also from Scritti Politti and Club Nouveau. In debuting at No 3 she now holds another record- that of highest debut by a female soloist in chart history!

On the rise again 17-11 this week, Mel and Kim’s album is now home to a third top 10 single, the single and title track from “F.L.M” (which stands for fun love & money incidentally) is their fastest starter debuting at No 16 last week and shooting to No 6 this week with 34,340 sales. It comes with a puppet video as the girls are apparently suffering a little fatigue from their flat out schedule.

Here’s most definitely a case of playing the long game, Black is, in reality, 26 year old singer Colin Vearncombe who has been attempted to break through for 6 years and can claim previous highlights of supporting the Thompson Twins on tour. He’s been through a couple of labels but his signing to A & M has finally generated a major hit in the form of “Sweetest Smile” which is his second song to chart and moves 12-8 (32,861).

Written by the team behind “True Colours” and “Like A Virgin” (Billy Steinberg & Tom Kelly) “Alone” was written for the band I-Ten and later surfaced on the soundtrack to US series “Dreams” but neither version brushed the UK charts. Much like Black, Heart had just one minor hit to their credit (“These Dreams” No 62) before the release of their version of “Alone” which jets in 15-9 (30,056) and is currently at No 1 stateside having knocked Whitney Houston from the top. The group first found fame with a folkier output in the mid 70s before slipping into decline and re-launching themselves as a rock band which gave them more US hits and has ultimately seen that success cross the Atlantic.

Terence Trent D’Arby holds at No 4 (43,809) thanks to TOTP but his attention will shift to his album out this week, Atlantic Starr progress 7-5 (38,607) at the cost of A-ha who surprisingly fall back 5-6 (34,833), and finally the Firm drop 3-10 (23,885) as the joke wears thin.

1- IT’S A SIN- Pet Shop Boys (76,347)

2- UNDER THE BOARDWALK- Bruce Willis (46,257)

6- THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS- A-Ha (34,833)

7- F.L.M- Mel & Kim (34,340)

8- SWEETEST SMILE- Black (32,861)

Another classic power ballad in 'Alone'. I went off it from overhearing it but I haven't listened to it recently so I really like it again. Although I prefer 'These Dreams' by Heart.

Lol at the big single cover hearts for Atlantic Starr, that from a distance might have confused people into thinking it was Heart.

'F.L.M' is good, the production is still very much house influenced like their previous tracks.

'Who's That Girl' is another very good Madonna single, similar holiday vibe to 'La Isla Bonita'.

I see ‘It’s a Sin’ entered the top 10 on the 25th June but was performed on ‘Wogan’ on the 1/6, how long was the promo before the release for it? I always thought songs were oaos in this era!

The title in the video is incorrect. I think it's meant to be July 1st

Oh my 1987 is the best year ever, ok maybe I'm biased cos it's when I started following music but these 4 newbies are all fantastic and just bought them all, Madonna and Heart as 7", FLM as 12" and then I bought the Black album when it came out

Heart is my #1 rock ballad in the history of music so welcome addition to the top 10. I was absolutely obsessed with the band Heart back then, but have to admit the parent album Bad Animals was not great besides Alone and There's The Girl... but then I re-discovered their previous album, cannot recall the title, but that was incredible and much better and had These Dreams, Never, What About Love...

Who's that Girl is a cute simple by Madonna, she was unbeatable back then in 87, but for me it's a bit like La Isla Bonita's little sister, a bit too similar with the Spanish elements but not as good

I kinda remember liking FLM a lot but recently heard it a few times and don't love it that much, I actually thought it had charted lower, it's good but not as great as the first 2 hits from them

Sweetest Smile is an incredible single and one of the best of the year, Colin/Black totally deserved a hit and the parent album was fantastic. I was thinking the other day of great 80s sophisticated pop bands and was thinking Sade, Swing Out Sister, Johnny Hates Jazz but totally forgot about Black, but they were at the top of the genre.

Not a fan of Who’s That Girl, feels like a weak single but given how huge Madonna is at this time I can see why it’s an instant top 3 hit.
Nothing's gonna make Samantha Fox

Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now is really the first 'classic SAW sounding' track, it really sounds like their stuff in 1988-9.

Can't help but agree on 'Who's That Girl', it's a really pointless non-entity single in her discography for me. Shame it's a #1 when so many much much better ones missed out.

It wasn’t an easy ride for her but Madonna claims her fifth chart topper this week with “Who’s That Girl” which follows in the same Hispanic vein as her last single (and No 1) “La Isla Bonita”, it pulled clear of The Pet Shop Boys, eventually, selling 75,922 to “It’s A Sin”’s 64,872. The latter song has sold 345,678 copies to date and is on course to become their biggest seller in a matter of weeks.

In cinema’s next month “La Bamba” is the biopic of the late Richie Valens and features the title song from the flick by the little known group Los Lobos (Spanish for “The Wolves”). The group did hit No 57 a few years ago with “Don’t Worry Baby” from their first album proper, but they’ve been more or less gigging across the USA to not much acclaim, but now their version of Valens’ “La Bamba” is doing business at the tills where lesser versions have failed, rising 32-5 (38,794) in just its second week- watch out Madonna. The song was never a UK hit for Valens though a UK version did make No 21 in 1964 for the Crickets (the song, it should be noted, is a 19th Century folk tune in its origin), Los Lobos climb despite not being on TOTP, they were booked to perform but were unable to travel after a visa mix-up.

If you’ve heard the current Boogie Box High cover of the Bee Gees “Jive Talkin” then you might recognise the vocals, though that’s all unconfirmed and non official. Boogie Box High are one Andros Georgiou who is the cousin of George Michael and recorded his version with former Haircut 100 member Nick Heyward and Style Council Mick Talbot before giving it to the mysterious vocalist. Michael is of course currently with Epic and so wouldn’t be moonlighting on other records….would he. The Bee Gees made No 5 back in 1975 and this looks like it could do better shooting 14-10 (26,911).

Atlantic Starr power 5-3 (41,871) but will need something major to go any higher, it’s enough to overpower poor Bruce Willis who dips 2-4 (41,514), Heart advance 9-6 (37,604) to slip past Mel & Kim who are left stranded at No 7 (35,513). Terence Trent D’Arby dives 4-8 (35,411) as his album dutifully arrives at No 1, and Black can’t maintain their rise and fall 8-9 (28,305).

5- LA BAMBA- Los Lobos (38,794)

6- ALONE- Heart (37,604)

7- F.L.M- Mel & Kim (35,513)

8- WISHING WELL- Terence Trent D’Arby (35,411)

9- SWEETEST SMILE- Black (28,305)

10- JIVE TALKIN- Boogie Box High (26,911)

Did not know the Heart version of 'Alone' wasn't the original - not a song I care much for in any form though.

Another good number one, surprised by the lukewarm reaction on here for 'Who's That Girl' as I think its a great upbeat pop song.

Jive Talking is the first of two interesting covers of disco songs in 1987. I don't like it much though I prefer the original Bee Gees' version, although the Bee Gees had many better songs.

I don't mind Who's That Girl - it's just not up there with her best singles from the 80s, probably doesn't help that it follows on from the superior La Isla Bonita but is quite similar to it

oh forgot La Bamba was coming! so the Spanish domination continues!

Still know all the lyrics of La Bamba by heart <3

Not really a fan of La Bamba, its been overplayed in media as a 'novelty holiday song' in the UK at least.
