I like most of FYC's songs but I don't really like their cover of 'Ever Fallen In Love', I just don't think that style of vocal goes that well with the song.

Never heard 'Irish Rover' much but it sounds good on listening there.

'If You Let Me Stay' has a very good chorus and is a bit of an 80s classic.

Love the songs from Terence Trent D'arby, Janet Jackson and Madonna, all from great 80s albums too

oh love that Terence Trent D'arby song

I remember I was convinced he was gonna be bigger than Prince and MJ :D

actually he could have been if he really have wanted I reckon but alas... his ego won :/

his debut is one of the best albums of the 80s

the Pogues one is also great, good to them finally having a hit

I’d pay a pretty penny for the Irish Rover single, basically played at the end of every night in every pub in Ireland!

If it wasn’t for them hitting the top 10 with Irish Rover in April 87 who knows whether FONY would have been a top 10 hit in December?

“Let It Be” remains at the No 1 position for a third week, but it takes a sales hit of 46% week on week and sold just 57,120 copies last week (the second lowest weekly tally of the year), that makes a total of 328,848 copies sold in just three weeks marking the song as the 6th biggest of the year. Its rate of decline would indicate that the song may trouble to make it a month at the top, but if it is deposed then it’s unlikely to be by Madonna who rises 3-2 but is losing sales with just 52,428 being convinced to buy it this week, it is however Madonna’s 5th No 2 hit, an impressive tally in just under 2 years.

There are therefore two main contenders for the top slot next week, Club Nouveau climb 6-3 (42,653) though it barely registers a sales increase, or Judy Boucher who darts 14-4 (42,364) with “Can’t Be With You Tonight”. Her first single “Dreaming Of A Little Island” became a reggae hit and is used as the official theme of the Jamaican tourist board though it didn’t become a hit, indeed follow up hits also failed to dent the charts but a chance play of her current single on radio was heard by Lizzie Webb of “TV-AM” who then used the song on her show which generated considerable interest in the track and saw its issue here. The singer comes from St Vincent and The Grenadines and is, as far as I can establish, the first popstar to hit the UK top 10 to hail from there.

Sheffield’s Living In A Box are one of the few bands to have a hit with the same title as the group, their debut release has made an instant splash advancing 23-10 (22,253) in its third week on the survey. Lead singer Richard Darbyshire was formerly in Zu Zu Sharks with former Adam & The Ants bassist Gary Tibbs, the group scored a Spanish chart topper with “Love Tumbles Down” though that failed to impress here and the group disbanded shortly after.

Terence Trent D’Arby holds at No 7 (33,592) as Fine Young Cannibals glide 10-9 (22,423), going the wrong way are Janet Jackson 4-5 (49,000), Mel & Kim 2-6 (39,117) and U2 5-8 (28,407). For Mel & Kim they rise to No 2 on the YTD.

1- LET IT BE- Ferry Aid (57,120)

2- LA ISLA BONITA- Madonna (52,428)

3- LEAN ON ME- Club Nouveau (42,653)

4- CAN’T BE WITH YOU TONIGHT- Judy Boucher (42,364)

5- LET’S WAIT AWHILE- Janet Jackson (39,321)

6- RESPECTABLE- Mel & Kim (39,117)

7- IF YOU LET ME STAY- Terence Trent D’Arby (33,592)

8- WITH OR WITHOUT YOU- U2 (28,407)

9- EVER FALLEN IN LOVE- Fine Young Cannibals (22,423)

10- LIVING IN A BOX- Living In A Box (22,253)

Surprised how quickly the sales of Respectable fell away, considering that just two or three weeks ago it was clearing 100K
'Living In A Box's production is brilliant, late 80s production at its best, can tell its produced by the same producer as Colonel Abrams' Trapped.
'The Irish Rover' and 'Living In A Box' *.* (the latter I know via Todd in the Shadows' One Hit Wonderland series on YouTube which I recommend watching x)
Yes he is American (so the series has covered some artists that are definitely odd to think of as one hit wonders from a UK perspective e.g. S Club 7 lol). Living In A Box was a bit of an obscure choice for the series as it wasn't even a particularly big hit in the US actually!
I don’t know if I’m more amazed that S Club 7 actually had a hit in the US or the results of my quick google search that show said hit was Never Had a Dream Come True

'La Isla Bonita' is my second favourite 80s Madonna single only behind 'Like A Prayer'

I always forget how much I enjoy 'Sign O' The Times' until I listen to it, as most of my Prince love goes to the Purple Rain era, but what a tune.

Yeh the production is real mid 80s, I like it. Love the lead singers guitar skills on TOTP there 🤣

love Living in a Box, great single! You gotta love a self-titled hit, guess there's not many of those :o

the Judy Butcher song I recall it being very very very very dull, not sure how it became such a big hit

MADONNA_1987+POSTER-560589.jpg

Recording the second lowest sales tally of the year, Madonna emerged from the scrum to claim her Fourth No 1 single, in doing so she creates chart history as the first female solo act to get to claim the magical 4th chart topper, she’s also the first act to pull three UK No 1 singles from one studio album, and the first woman to co-write four chart toppers. That’s the good news, the fact that “La Isla Bonita” ascends to the No 1 spot with just 49,742 copies isn’t great (it's the lowest tally since Falco 50 weeks ago) impacted by a day lost to a bank holiday which it will face again next week, it was helped however by her concert tickets going on sale and selling out in just hours, and also a TOTP showing of the video which saw the material girl overturn a slight deficit to Judy Boucher who ended up moving 4-2 on a sale of 40,868 (itself surprisingly down at retail week on week). With both songs on TOTP this week the outcome next week is anyone’s call.

Five Star meanwhile are equalling other records set. Michael Jackson pulled five top 10 singles from “Thriller” and now the Essex fivesome do the same with “The Slightest Touch” which is remixed by Shep Pettibone for single release and this week jets 14-8 (27,336) to become the fifth top 10 single from “Silk & Steel” and the sixth release in total. The group have confirmed that it will also be the final release as they are busy working on their third album which is scheduled for this autumn.

Lots of other action this week, Club Nouveau hold at three (40,630) and were unlucky not to overtake Boucher at the death, whilst Ferry Aid drop 1-4 (39,049) a further sales loss of 43% but should clear 400,000 copies before it exits the chart, and Mel & Kim rise 6-5 (33,966) despite a big downturn in sales, their album “FLM” also debuts at No 3. Living In A Box fly 10-6 (29,937) climbing above Terence Trent D’arby who holds a third week at No 7 (27,574), and Janet Jackson and Fine Young Cannibals both slip into reverse 5-9 (26,809) and 9-10 (22,219).

Incredibly impressive to claim a third number one single from an album that has already sold so well, Madonna really was at the very top of her game in 1986/87.
