They shoulda followed up with Crazy for another massive no.1, as Sometimes was dire. No one liked it, it's not musically, sonically or lyrically interesting, it's really boring, and coming in at #3 after one of the biggest pop songs of all time shows you it was a mistake. Crazy woulda been a no.1. Both were seen as maaassive underperformances, and were putting a limiter on her career!!! Fortunately she turned it arounf with BTMYH and Oops, getting concurrent no 1s after that.

Not everything in the world can get to #1, and just because something doesn't does not make it a "flop". I don't like 'Sometimes' either for what it's worth, but I can guarantee they were not viewed as being underperformances.

She ended 1999 with the biggest song of the year, two further top 5 hits and an album that had sold a truckload of copies. She was seen as being the premier pop girl and it set her up very nicely for what was to come next.

OMG how can anyone call a #3 & #5 peaks flops, I don't recall either being labelled flops or underperformers at the time as they both continued the momentum & massive success of her debut 'Baby One More Time'. "Sometimes" was a great 2nd single in my opinion & shows a different side to her by releasing a mid-tempo ballad. Anyway anything released after that record breaking smash hit would be compared unfavourably to it & this was a nice change of pace for Britney at the time.

"(You Drive Me) Crazy" - Another firm fave of mine, this was obviously held back for release due to it being remixed for its single release, which was a smart move as while the original album version was good, the 'Stop Remix' pops even more. It's #5 peak was FAR FAR from an underperformance & it was released during a very busy chart week with S Club 7 & Shania Twain ahead of it & its chart peak was a great result given the album had been out for several months by this point & had already sold by the bucketloads.

These results are crazy Over protected not top 10 !!

If I remember rightly, Sometimes didn’t do that well in the US and it came down to whether Drive Me Crazy did well

Crazy was a big hit in the US so the label invested more into her.

Y'all overrate 'Born To Make You Happy' so much :(

I really don't get why it's loved as much as it is. I actually always forget it exists  (I don't even particularly dislike the song but it really shouldn't be top 10 over like at LEAST 5 tracks that came before it)

Born To Make You Happy is a superbly constructed pop-ballad (in my opinion)
Wasn't it Basshunter that denied 'Piece of Me' the #1 spot in the UK?

Yup!

9. Womanizer | 8.708 Highest Scores: 10: (Nina West, Anita Hanjaab, Slayer, Nick F1, TimConArtist, JLJ, Nick Jonas, Mack, Chapman), Lowest Scores: 3: (Jessie Where)

At #9 is Womanizer, released in September 2008 as the lead single from Britney's 6th studio album Circus. Written and produced by The Outsyders, the song was re-recorded after a snippet was leaked onto the internet. The song was intended to Britney back at the top of the charts after a tumultuous year following her highly-publicized personal struggles in 2007. Britney wanted to move away from the darker & more urban themes of her previous album 'Blackout' & wanted her next project to be lighter. Upon release it received critical acclaim from music critics who deemed it a strong comeback single & became a major global success. In the USA it became her first #1 hit since 1999 & broke the record for the highest jump to number one at a time - 96-1, which was later broken by Kelly Clarkson in 2009. Elsewhere it managed to top the charts in several countries such as Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Norway & Sweden, as well as hitting top 5 peaks in almost every country it charted in and receiving several certifications from several countries. The song received a nomination for Best Dance Recording at the 52nd Grammy Awards, becoming her second nomination in the category.

This is the highest ranking song not to get an 11 score, in fact none of the 'Circus' era singles manged any 11 scores which is surprising. While this did put Britney back at the top of the charts, but it came at a price, as from 2008-2021 anything she recorded and released during that time period became the product of a 13-year conservatorship under her father, Jamie Spears, in which she had no control. Pushing all that drama aside this comeback single is a really good pop song and everything a Britney lead single should be in terms of setting the perfect tone for the album. From the opening intro of loud sirens and juddering drum kicks, it pushes Britney to the forefront with her quick fire delivery, making her sound active and engaged with razor sharp confidence. The throbbing synths that runs throughout the relentless dance beats sound refined providing the perfect backdrop for the girl power lyrics thanks to the slick and stylish production. This is a solid Britney track through and through and well deserved its top 10 placement on here.

I totally agree neither were flops by any stretch of the imagination however sadly tons of artists got labelled as flops for those peaks back then, This groove / Let your head go at #3 and Out of your mind at #2 for Victoria Beckham were seen as flops (ridiculous)

'I'm A Slave 4 U' is a great start to the top 10  it's a shame that it didn't chart so well in the U.S. but I feel like its impact far outweighs that position.

I forget how much I enjoy 'Womanizer' until I revisit it! Love the video too. I'll always associate that song with the X Factor performance that the show was hyping up all night

8. Born To Make You Happy | 8.75 Highest Scores: 11: (Nick F1, pippa, Pandamic Tension), 10: (Nina West, spiceboy, Anita Hanjaab, ready for it, Mack), Lowest Scores: 5: (Jade)

At #8 is Born To Make You Happy, released in December 1999 as the 4th and final European single from Britney's debut album Baby One More Time. Written and produced by Swedish duo Kristian Lundin & Andreas Carlsson, and this was the first work by the duo & was mixed at Cheiron Studios by Max Martin. Britney's producers were unhappy with the sexual overtones of the song, and the song underwent at least one re-write before its release. Britney first recorded the vocals for the track in May 1998, which were later re-recorded in September 1999 for the ‘Bonus Remix’ of the song. The 'Bonus Remix' was recorded following the label's idea to remix the song to have more punch & to be more commercial. This idea came from the success of the remix release of "(You Drive Me) Crazy". Within 24 hours of hearing the new remix, Clive Calder decided to keep the original album version for the single release, and to have the "Bonus Remix" as the b-side to the single. Upon release it received mixed to positive reviews from music critics & became a massive success throughout Europe by topping the charts in UK & Ireland and reaching top 5 peaks in 15 other countries including Austria, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden & Switzerland. The song wasn't released as a single in the USA & Australia, instead "From The Bottom of My Broken Heart" was released as the final single in those countries.

Talk about ending a successful debut era with an almighty BANG (well in Europe at the very least). This song was an important bookend to the album's campaign in the UK as it became her 2nd #1 and reignited interest in the album itself, which went onto reach a new peak of #2 & eventually go onto sell over a Million copies. This cute mid-tempo ballad is laden with stunning synths, drum kicks & beautiful melodies gives it a more organic sound than the previous singles, along with Britney's sweet yet earnest vocals helps elevate it far beyond its teen pop foundations. Britney's fantastic vocals and charisma helps sell this song for everything that's its worth right before it heads into that massive key change & still to this day stands as one of her finest ever recordings.
Oops at me giving 'Born To Make You Happy' its lowest score! I've never found it particularly interesting - glad it's out now as I love everything remaining.

LOVE Born to make you happy it is such a classic!

I wouldn't give Womanizer a top 10 place, Til the world ends deserves its place swapping with Womanizer
