March 30, 20241 yr So many great songs in this final, with the Prince one being yet another. LOVE that Birdhouse in Your Soul made the final and did very respectably in it as well.

March 30, 20241 yr Two big favourites in the top 20 so far, Birdhouse in Your Soul is gloriously eccentric, and a likely contender for best song ever written from the perspective of an inanimate object. It's a shame it took Prince's death for Purple Rain to repeak, but it is deserved, a gorgeous epic
March 30, 20241 yr Getting into the realm of wall-to-wall classics by this point. Weird to think that (unless I missed it earlier) the likes of Little Boots (much as I like the song and voted it highly) is ahead of all of these!
March 30, 20241 yr And there goes my 50 :( though I am pleased 'The Power Of Goodbye' ended up this high up. Some days I consider it my all time favourite Madonna song but other days it's 'Live To Tell' or 'La Isla Bonita' or 'Frozen' or 'Like A Prayer'... it's firmly in the top 5 anyway, it's an absolutely flawless song in every respect  'Purple Rain' and the U2 song are both fine but overrated as classics IMO... I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to either of them. Both artists have got much better songs in their canons.
March 30, 20241 yr Didn't end voting in this but 'The Power of Goodbye' is incredible and my 2nd fave from ROL era!
March 31, 20241 yr U2's was their first chart-topper for me, inspirational yet very downbeat, gospel-tinged listing of everything achieved in life - but that still not being enough. It's both religious and about love, is my take, but it's never overtly clear. The album is one of the greats. Prince's Purple rain is even more one of the greatest albums ever, and in the context of the album, Purple Rain is fine, it adds weight to a varied and vibrant set of tracks, percussive brilliance. Never seen the film, not bothered at all, but Prince was a huge fave in the 80's. Except for this meandering dirge, which I have OD'd on many times over since 1984. Every single track on the album is better than it and the real classic is When Doves Cry, now that's what I call awesome.... Madonna also a chart-topper for me, where Frozen and Ray Of Light just missed out :o Another great album that one.

The saxophone solo was played by Clarence Clemons who had been part of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band since 1972. The video marked his last appearance before he died. QeWBS0JBNzQ

It's the final part of the four song suite that makes up the 'Concerto For A Rainy Day' on side 3 of the 'Out Of The Blue' album which explains the "please turn me over" instruction at the end of the song. aQUlA8Hcv4s
March 31, 20241 yr That's one of Lady Gaga's best singles imo so it's a shame she, rather uncharacteristically, doesn't make the top 10 for once There's one song still to come that I'm absolutely amazed is still in
March 31, 20241 yr Author 12. The guest vocalist was Kate Pierson from the B-52's. YYOKMUTTDdA
March 31, 20241 yr That interplay between Kate Pierson and Michael Stipe on Shiny Happy People is just utterly fabulous! I can’t believe ELO missed the Top 10! :nono:
March 31, 20241 yr I thought Mr Blue Sky could be a challenger to win this, injustice that it's not even in the top 10 :(
March 31, 20241 yr 'Shiny Happy People' is such a fun song, super pleased it finished so high - I was expecting it out before the top 30! Hopefully R.E.M. can finish even higher next year. Two songs which dropped out yesterday also made my top 10 - U2 could also do very well in a #7s rate, Prince not so likely.
March 31, 20241 yr I bought Shiny Happy People at the time. I can see why Michael Stipe would dislike singing it after it became a hit but it's great fun - I didn't realise until way afterwards that it was Kate Pierson but she definitely adds a lot to the song.
