Love “Crystal” - it was their first new single for over 6 years so I think that helped it debut in the Top 10. It was the second track they played when I saw them at Latitude in 2016. *.*

In the music video for “Crystal” the band are played by a younger ficticious band called 'The Killers', and that's where the US band got their name, and the inspiration for the music video for “Somebody Told Me”.

I remember The Alarm doing something similar in 2004- but they actually changed their name to The Poppy Fields and then got a younger band to pretend to be them, managed to get a Top 30 hit out of it (which I guess will be reviewed here at some later date) as a way of making a point about the ageism in the music industry.

Getting into great stuff here, Crystal is a 10/10 from me, possibly my all-time fave New Order track (or True Faith), and I saw them in 2006, and was amused to see a sea of men with grey or balding heads, so much so the band commented on it! Turn Off The Lights was a strong 8/10 as per my rate at the time, and jamiroquai a 9/10, one of their best tracks. Eve's Let Me Blow Your Mind was fab too, an easy 9/10 and great to see Gwen unexpectedly moving into pop.

Hide U is a good 6/10 but it took subsequent (smaller) hits to sell me on Kosheen - each was better than the last I thought, and they were the first drum n bass act to top my charts, I think. Bliss was my 2nd Muse top 20, so that'll be an 8/10 then, and Five topped my charts with the fabulous dancepop of Let's Dance, easily a pop classic of the year 10/10.

The manchild, Groove Armada, Tymes 4, De Nada (you're welcome too) & Slusnick tracks impressed me not, I guess, as although I had just been into my first gay bar (The Smugglers in Southampton) it was a quiet Saturday afternoon, a quick coke, and out inside 15 minutes, not an evening dancefloor extravaganza. I was very shy... Sophie, though, was popdancetastic 9/10, and I was old enough to chart the original Cher disco track circa 1979. Made For Lovin' You, though, sorry a mere 3/10 from moi, Anastacia was always a bit hit and miss in my affections.

Shade Sheist was pleasant enough for me, 7/10, and ditto to Embrace's Wonder. Little Trees rings a bell, but more of an annoying kiddie film bell, and Dante Thomas, as was my wont, tickled my r 'n' b taste buds enough for a 7/10. Supersister still, meanwhile, did nothing for me.

Hide U is a bit monotone and repetitive for me, I prefer some of Kosheen's other songs.

Slusnik Luna - Sun is my favourite of the last batch, the big buildup and vocal effects I like in it!

Edited by TheSnake

Aw lot of these that somehow only have 7-10 minute versions available did actually have radio edits available back then that got played on the radio and featured on the single.

A solid bunch here - the only one to top my chart was Love You Anyway by De Nada, which I still think is a really lovely garage track with lovely chord progressions that I feel deserved better than No.15. It also needs to be added to Spotify along with their other top 40 hit.

Take Me Home is my second favourite, I thought that was a very solid solo debut from Sophie. I wasn't really sure what to expect from her solo career (would it be dance, or more indie like theaudience) and I hadn't heard the Cher version beforehand so it was new to me and I thought it was packed with hooks, but she did have better to come.

Crystal is a strong track, and so are Turn Off The Light, Little L (a very slick groove, I still think you can hear Jamiroquai influence in a lot of Dua Lipa's music), and Let Me Blow Ya Mind (was very fresh at the time to hear Gwen on a track like this!).

I agree with the consensus on Kosheen, a decent hit but I preferred pretty much everything that followed in the two years after. This remains their biggest though anyway.

Like so many pop bands of the time, Five seemed to go out with a huge hit as their penultimate single, then one lesser hit and then it was all over. Let's Dance was everywhere and the video was funny at the time (maybe not so much in retrospect considering Sean's mental health is why he didn't appear). I did think it would become more of a classic single, but I don't really ever hear it anywhere now.

Manchild I don't remember and it did nothing for me just listening to it now, Sun I remember thinking was alright at the time. Again, I wasn't overkeen on the Anastacia song, she was more miss than hit for me until her second album.

I liked the sample/bassline in Where I Wanna Be, but that's about it. Miss California was weirdly one of the biggest hits of the year in Germany (and I'm pretty sure No.1 there), so it's strange it really just didn't translate here at all, as neither act was German so I don't know why they would otherwise take to it so much more. It's quite a catchy track.

Shopping is naff, and had little of the charm of Coffee, so I do understand that score. I'm surprised they managed a second top 40 at all, as Coffee felt like a real one-off novelty that wouldn't carry over to a second single. Bodyrock was very average really.

I quite like Superstylin', weird that it outpeaked all of their great 1999 singles but it was a strong production in its own right.

I find Help I'm A Fish quite charming. I didn't buy it, it felt a bit juvenile for me at the time, I was clearly way too cool for school. Yet all these years on I still listen to it every now and then, it's impossibly catchy. A hit in other countries for another Danish girl group called Creamy, who had their cover of Neverending Story cancelled here, so they lost out twice on a UK hit!

A hit in other countries for another Danish girl group called Creamy, who had their cover of Neverending Story cancelled here, so they lost out twice on a UK hit!

So in the early 00s there was both Creamy and Milky and also Milk and Sugar!

EDIT: also Milk Inc too.

As well as rapper Milk, who featured on the Jason Downs hit earlier in 2001.

All in all a rather lacklustre group here; thank goodness for The Charlatans.

8 The Charlatans Love Is The Key The lead single from their 7th album and their final Top 20 hit: a cracking track with a pounding rhythmic urgency to it

7 Weekend Players 21st Century Only Top 40 for this duo including Andy from Groove Armada: I find the production transfixing and it's a soothing track

7 Freefall Featuring Jan Johnston Skydive (I Feel Wonderful) Not to be confused with "Skydive", a different song which missed the Top 40, this is a euphoric and well sung trance track

6 Lowgold Beauty Dies Young {2001} Only Top 40 for this UK band, scraping in after several misses, and a good track with a strong wall of guitars type of sound

5 Lifehouse Hanging By A Moment Debut single for this US band and much bigger over there: it's a decent and soulful soft rock song but nothing too exciting

5 Foxy Brown Oh Yeah Only hit this century for the US rapper which includes an 80s sample: this has a nice ragga feel but is quite raw sounding

5 American Hi-Fi Flavor Of The Weak Only hit for this US band which reminds me of "You Said No" by Busted: it's a pleasant but unremarkable track in any case

4 Blue Too Close 907th #1: the strength of "All Rise" set up the success of this, and there's a soulfulness to it but the melody is fairly dull

4 Emma Bunton Take My Breath Away This was the winner of a vote by her fans on what should be the 2nd single: it's sweet and pleasant but not very interesting

3 112 Peaches And Cream Last hit for them: this isn't particularly bad but it's very standard pop RnB of the time and doesn't have much effect on me

3 3LW Playas Gon' Play Their 2nd and final Top 40: this is another beige pop RnB style track that sounds very early '00s and doesn't showcase them

2 Uncle Kracker Follow Me Only hit for this US singer: a clever tune but not a sophisticated or well aged piece of music and the lyrics are slightly creepy

2 Louise Stuck In The Middle I tend to give short shrift to covers like this that really are just trying to sound as much like the original song as possible

2 DJ Luck And MC Neat Featuring Ari Gold I'm All About You Last of their 5 Top 20 hits and it seems like they've run out of ideas as this is terribly bland and missing the garage edginess

I remember the Uncle Kracker song a lot from the time. Didn't think the lyrics were creepy before but now you've mentioned it, the 'I'll be the one to tuck you in at night' maybe.

Some iconic tracks in the next batch. You could maybe have reviewed that N-Trance - Set You Free 2001 remix (the Rob Searle remix) - I am guessing you prefer the original then!

. You could maybe have reviewed that N-Trance - Set You Free 2001 remix (the Rob Searle remix) - I am guessing you prefer the original then!

It’s not about whether I prefer it or not as my rules are objective. If a Top 40 hit re-charts I only review the first appearance, even if the second is a different mix. It gets too messy otherwise as sometimes you get a very slightly different mix that’s almost indistinguishable like with “Dancing In The Moonlight” or Matt Darey’s “Beautoful”. Sometimes it’s hard to tell what mix even was the official A side single. Also later on remixes and originals will be combined into the same chart entry anyway so it feels more consistent to only review each song once.

I will make an exception if the second chart appearance is an entirely different song, as will happen with “Ain’t It Funny”.

Love Is The Key is a good 7/10 but not quite up there with Then, Only One I Know, Tellin Stories and the Charlatans later track Loving You Is Easy. Dance/ish tracks that missed my chart include Weekend Players, Freefall, and non-dance Lowgold and DJ Pressing-their-Luck & MC not-so-neat. As per usual, big US radio hits had more impact than UK radio hits (cos, working in the UK, not hearing the radio, and holiday in US so in car all the time or in motel room with it on) so Lifehouse was a 9/10, Uncle Cracker a 6/10 was never that fussed about that one.

Oh Yeah 3/10, American Hi-Fi 4/10, Blue's though a fairly good 8/10, though it's too close to being a 7/10 in retrospect. Ditto Emma Bunton really. Decent pop both but not memorable. Louise's though, a 9/10, a really good cover of a classic that I didn't love back in 1973 - I liked it, but wasn't a huge fan of it till long after Baker Street. To anyone not knowing the original (there must have been some!) it's pretty good.

Follow Me is absolutely creepy.a song about telling a girl she can leave her current partner for him. What’s more baffling is people use this as their wedding song.

2001 weeks 34+35

The lyrics of 'Shopping' were... an experience

'Hide U' is not getting enough love  it's my favourite of the batch, I find the John Creamer & Stephane K mix particularly gorgeous <3

'Superstylin' and 'Let Me Blow Ya Mind' would round out my top 3 - the former is a banger and the latter an interesting pivot for Gwen indeed.

I thought "Follow Me" by Uncle Kracker was about drugs "all I know is when I'm with you I make you free and swim through your veins like a fish in the sea", sounds like someone getting hooked on drugs to me.

What people may not have known about Uncle Kracker was that he was Kid Rock's DJ and the rest of his album was a similar sound to Kid Rock, so if someone unaware bought the album on this song alone they'd of been in for a shock.

We’ve ended up with my biggest group yet of 22 including 2 double As, thanks to my rule of combining any weeks with less than 10 with a neighbouring week. A mostly really good and varied bunch: “Starlight” is an old favourite but “Souljacker Part 1” was a new and brilliant discovery for me.

9 Eels Souljacker Part 1 Their last Top 40: in contrast with the last, "Mr E's Beautiful Blues", this is a wonderfully gritty and infectious rock number

9 The Supermen Lovers Featuring Mani Hoffman Starlight The Supermen Lovers is a French solo act here with his only hit, teaming up with Mani to produce a great unique house track

8 The Chemical Brothers It Began In Afrika "Afrika-ka-ka-ka": this is the lead from their 4th album and a great track with an African beat and other interesting themes

8 Fatboy Slim A Song For Shelter/Ya Mama A very strong double A side: "Ya Mama" is a typical Norman style track but the other has an arresting stream of consciousness

8 Barthezz On The Move 1st of 2 hits for this Dutch DJ: an excellent trance track with a stonking tune and energy that does create a feeling of motion

7 Dido Hunter The 3rd smaller hit from "No Angel": I've always loved this track and how she puts the relatable story across so effectively

7 Manic Street Preachers Let Robeson Sing A tribute to Black American activist Paul Robeson and the 4th single from "Know Your Enemy": a sweet and very tuneful track

7 Ed Case And Sweetie Irie Who 2nd and last hit for the garage DJ who remixed "Clint Eastwood": a raw track with raucous vocals but catchy and effective

6 Staind It's Been Awhile Their debut hit from the #1 album "Break The Cycle": it's a good and emotionally charged song without being extraordinary

6 Redman Featuring Adam F Smash Sumthin' Samples the "Romeo And Juliet” theme: quite an aggressive track and I wouldn't want to meet them in a dark alley, but good

6 Darude Out Of Control (Back For More) 3rd and last hit for him and unlike the others this is sung throughout: it's a powerful and intense melody but nothing unique

5 Nelly And St Lunatics Batter Up A contrast beteeen the very radio friendly "Ride Wit Me" and this much more hard edged dose of RnB, but I quite like this

5 allSTARS* Things That Go Bump In The Night/Is There Something I Should Know? The Duran Duran cover is quite bland and a 3 but the 1st side is a good 7: a really inspired and fun Halloween themed track

5 Samantha Mumba Baby Come On Over Another successful hit for her that's very catchy and well produced and where she sounds great, but it's also terribly basic

4 Maxwell D Serious Only hit for this UK garage performer: this has a reggae flavour to it and it's slightly headache inducing but has a good beat

4 Marilyn Manson The Nobodies A lyrically very heavy going song about the Columbine shooting from the attackers' point of view: musically it's not bad

4 Bob The Builder Mambo No 5 908th #1: 2nd and last hit for Bob and not as enjoyable as the 1st but quite a clever reimagination of the Lou Bega song

3 Artful Dodger Featuring Melanie Blatt Twenty Four Seven The 1st solo appearance for Mel teaming up with the hitmaking duo: a run of the mill garage track and their weakest so far

3 Macy Gray Featuring Erykah Badu Sweet Baby The lead single from her 2nd album: the performance has her usual endearing quality but the song itself is sadly quite dull

2 Lil' Kim Featuring Phil Collins In The Air Tonite A rather curious cover of the Phil Collins song: her own parts of the track aren't bad but it takes all the drama out of Phil's

2 DJ Otzi Hey Baby 909th #1: a huge long running hit for this Austrian performer with a rather obnoxious version of the 60s Bruce Chanel hit

1 Spiritualized Stop Your Crying Highest peaking hit for this UK rock band: I find this incredibly boring and repetitive yet it's obviously trying to be anthemic

'Starlight' is very good and endearing with the video, I assumed the Superman Lovers were a duo or group.

'It Began In Africa' is a good follow on to the Safri Duo trend.

'Out of Control' is another great Darude single, yes its more poppy than the other two but I really like it.

'On The Move' is probably my favourite tune of the bunch, very energetic and a bit hyper.

Edited by TheSnake

I'm always going to like any Eels record, and that is true for 2024, 2001 or the 90's, and Souljacker is a strong 7/10, not quite up there with their quirky stuff but the change of sound works well. Starlight is a 10/10 and dance anthem from my clubbing days, yes we have arrived at a regular Southampton night out track, and still sounds infectiously fun. As a Superman lover (at least Silver Age Superman), the name didnt hurt either. I don't recall the Afrika-ka-ka track and The Chemical brothers were never guaranteed making my charts, depended on the track, and this one didn't. Fatboy Slim ditto. Barthezz no idea.

Hunter gave a Dido a decent 7/10, Let Robeson Sing merely a 4/10 for the Manics, though I did love Paul Robeson's Ol' Man River, who wouldn't, and if you havent heard it, google the movie clip (Showboat). Potential oldest recording ever for BJSC at 1936, hmmmm..... Ed Case? Who? Staind, 7/10, don't remember it though! That also applies to Redman, 7/10. There are 3 Darude chart entries in my A-Z. All of them for Sandstorm. Batter Up, let's give it a 6/10 for Nelly.

allstars mean nothing to me, sorry, but Baby Come On Over grabs an 8/10 and the second-best track so far, so not a classic batch overall. Mambo No. 5 is worth a 3/10 which is better than Marilyn Mansun, Maxwell D. The remainder I rate a bit higher though, Artful Dodger with Melanie Blatt is worth a 7/10 I reckon, Sweet Baby a 6/10, ditto L'il Kim, and it is a great song even if it's not up to the original. DJ Otzi massacred a 60's classic, turning it from pop to pap, and is awarded a 2/10 and should be grateful for that. I like the choice of word "obnoxious"! Spiritualized, though, worked for me, and gets the runners-up award and a low-ish 9/10 for this from a largely underwhelming batch. 1 classic, 1 very good, 1 good and a bunch of decents.

Week 33

Ain't It Funny > Destiny > Superstring > One Minute Man > I Don't Know > Hidden Place > Precious Heart > 21 Seconds > Knives Out > Ante Up > The Real Life

Weeks 34 and 35

Take Me Home > Turn Off The Light > Help I'm A Fish (biased to this one as I bought it at the time, cute and catchy bop )> Bliss > Let's Dance > Let Me Blow Ya Mind > Wonder (find this rather lovely and the best of the ones from them that has appeared so far) > Luna Sun (ooh this is a fab discovery) > Crystal (this was a good discovery from them as only know the one or two well known tracks of theirs) > Little L (probably the one or two songs I've enjoyed from them along with Deeper Underground) > Hide U > Superstylin > Love You Anyway > Bodyrock > Made For Lovin' You > California > Nothing Without Me > Where I Wanna Be > Shopping (naff personified)

Week 36

Flavor Of The Weak (rock anthem) > Stuck In The Middle (the original is of course great but I really like this one too, heard this one years before too lol) > Too Close > Love Is The Key (oh I do recognise this as it goes on, great beat to it and good song overall) > 21st Century (Wardy just sent this act to BJSC and I'd recommend 'Into The Sun' since you liked this, it just missed out at 42.. but this is good too) > Follow Me > Skydive (I Feel Wonderful) > Beauty Dies Young > Oh Yeah > Hanging By A Moment > Take My Breath Away > Playas Gon' Play > I'm All About You > Peaches And Cream

Anyone who doesn’t know “F.E.A.R.” should give it a listen as it’s stunningly beautiful. I don’t think The Stone Roses ever did anything so reflective and poetic.

9 Ian Brown F.E.A.R. Lead from his 3rd album and a stunning, enchanting track with echoing vocals, cryptic lyrics and gorgeous backing strings

8 Kylie Minogue Can't Get You Out Of My Head 910th #1:an very simple but incredibly clever and effective song about obsession that loops around like it's stuck in a rut

8 Starsailor Alcoholic Their highest peaking and best single: they can be pedestrian but this works beautifully with the floaty chorus and piano

7 Cosmic Rough Riders The Pain Inside This doesn't blow me away quite like "Revolution", but it's a very lovely folk rock style track with beautiful rich harmonies

7 DJ Tiesto Urban Train 1st Top 40 for this Dutch DJ who will have a long career: a lovely twinkly track with Kirsty Hawkshaw's ethereal vocals

6 Faithless Muhammad Ali A minor hit but I really admire how different it is from "We Come 1": a trip hop stream of consciousness and soulful chorus

6 Ludacris Featuring Nate Dogg Area Codes This is fun and I like it when he recites all the random codes, but doesn't have the manic energy of "What's Your Fantasy"

6 The Future Sound Of London Papua New Guinea 2001 A remix by DJ Satoshi Tomiie: the original is sublime and I much prefer it overall, but this has an interesting throbbing beat

5 Kings Of Tomorrow Featuring Julie McKnight Finally {2001 Re-Release} Only Top 40 for this DJ duo: this is decent but unremarkable and will be turned into something magical in a couple of years

5 Alien Ant Farm Smooth Criminal 1st Top 40 for this US rock band: the cover does work well and the vocals sound good, but there isn't any real originality

4 Travis Side This follow up to "Sing" is pleasant enough but whereas that had the pulsing banjos this has little to make it really interesting

4 Victoria Beckham Not Such An Innocent Girl Her 1st fully solo hit and much was made of the battle with Kylie who outsold her by a factor of 10; this is very ordinary

3 Shaggy Luv Me Luv Me Orignallt recorded with Janet Jackson, both the chorus and production of this sample old hits so there isn't much creativity
