I quite like the French house production of 'Chillin' but do find that chorus pretty weak, so not quite re-creating the magic of 'Lady (Hear Me Tonight)'.

 

First listen of 'Happiness' and I was just willing it to turn into 'B.O.T.A. (Baddest of Them All)' the whole time :lol: so agreed that Eliza utilised the sample better.

 

I really liked 'What Took You So Long?' when I was younger but nowadays it doesn't grab me as much, I prefer the more 60s-leaning pivot of her next era.

 

'Let Love Be Your Energy' is quite inoffensive really. I do gravitate towards the more in-your-face moments from this Robbie album campaign on the whole, although do have a soft spot for 'Better Man' as my dad used to play it on guitar all the time when I was growing up.

 

Your thoughts echo mine re. 'All For You', Julian, the intro always hooks me in but then the song progressively loses me more as it goes along. I would class myself as a Janet fan overall, so on that level I'm pleased that she did extend her hit-making abilities into the 21st century, at least for now.

 

'Run For Cover' doesn't quite touch the brilliance of 'Overload' for me but it's another standout, mature moment from One Touch - great stuff. That would be my runner-up for this section, with my top pick matching yours - agreed that 'Crawling' is a powerful moment from them.

'Happiness' is a classic I know it still is occasionally played quite a bit on a local dance music radio station, I think its a good use of the sample and the trance synth bit is good too.

 

I like the Norman Bass track too.

 

'Let Love Be Your Energy' is a good Robbie track.

 

'

“Get Ur Freak On” and “Survivor” are classics but not top favourites of mine, so I’m happy to give the win instead to the hypnotic Orbital track.

 

8 Orbital Funny Break (One Is Enough) This was co-written by the vocalist Naomi Bedford: it's a totally captivating and almost ritualistic sounding, beautiful track

8 Missy Elliott Get Ur Freak On An innovative infectious rap hit that doesn't sound like anything that's gone before, though she'll have even better to come

7 Destiny's Child Survivor 895th #1: another empowerment anthem and great pop song; it's quite relentless though the middle 8 gives it a softer side

7 Airheadz Stanley (Here I Am) Only hit for this duo which did have an uncleared "Stan" sample now replaced: a very nice trance track with tempo changes

6 Snoop Dogg Snoop Dogg This is effectively Part 2 of his debut hit "Who Am I?" and it's not as good as that but enjoyable with plenty of individuality

6 Schiller Das Glockenspiel Only hit for this German electronic act: it's a glockenspiel alright and a strong tinny melody, but without much development

5 The Corrs Give Me A Reason A well composed and enjoyable pop track with more points of interest than "Irresistible", but lacking the "Breathless" magic

4 Madonna What It Feels Like For A Girl This has that similar dreamy production to "The Beach" hits, but aside from that I find it slightly plodding with a flat chorus

3 Ronan Keating Lovin' Each Day This has a similar energy to the very successful "Life Is A Rollercoaster" but it's lacking in melody with comically bad rhymes

2 Brian Harvey Straight Up No Bends 1st of a couple of hits for this East 17 star; sadly it's quite a derivative and monotonous pop RnB song with no light or shade

1 O-Town Liquid Dreams How was a song about ejaculation referencing female artists' physical features deemed suitable, plus it's musically formulaic

Well here's a surprise, I didnt chart either Orbital or Missy E - don't remember Orbital at all, but Get Ur Freak On is a well-remembered classic. I think it got on my nerves a bit with the repetition of the title over and over but it's worth at least a 5/10 from this non-fan. She def had way better to come though.

 

Survivor is a great pop tune, 9/10, and catchy. Snoop Dogg & Airheadz failed to impress me enough to chart them, Schiller glockenspiel-ed without notice, and The Corrs give me a reason to give them a 6/10. Madonna, meanwhile, just about grabs a weak 9/10, but in retrospect it's prob more an 8.

 

Lovin' Each Day is another Gregg "New Radicals" Alexander/Rick Nowels song, like Life Is A Rollercoaster, and it's not as classic as that one, but it's still a catchy romping 9/10 from me. Brian harvey managed to grab a forgotten 7/10 from me, so Ive no idea what it sounds like, but it obv appealed at the time. I was still too naive to realise Liquid Dreams was about that naughtiness so it got a 7/10 from me, but by the end of the summer I would be far less naive as I start going to pubs and then clubs.

 

 

The lyrics of 'Liquid Dreams' make me cringe so not mad to see that dead last in the rankings :kink:

 

'What It Feels Like for a Girl' has lovely production and an important message about double standards, but I don't really return to it much. She came out swinging with 'Music' and 'Don't Tell Me' but I agree that the chorus on this one feels comparatively flat - not just because of the tempo change as she has some stunning slower moments.

 

'Survivor' is great, empowering and the strings match up well to the fierce determination of the lyrics. Beyoncé was definitely on to something when singing "even in my years to come I'm still gon' be here" as she continues to top the chart 23 years later! Great to see Michelle getting a chance to shine on the middle 8 too.

 

'Get Ur Freak On' is iconic *.* what a fun hip-hop record. Like 'Try Again' earlier, this is another Timbaland production that has aged well. Love the bhangra elements!

 

'Funny Break (One Is Enough)' is another one I recognise but didn't know who it was by until today. Need to continue filling in Orbital gaps!

Time to indulge in some great pop - from the distorted “boogie woogie beat” section to the perfectly complementary male and female verses to the joyous chorus to the bridge which takes it up yet another level, “Don’t Stop Moving” is a fabulous record.

 

9 S Club 7 Don't Stop Movin' 896th #1: one of the best songs from this type of pop band of all time and still a joyous and euphoric guaranteed floor filler

8 Fatboy Slim Star 69/Weapon Of Choice "Weapon Of Choice" is a brilliantly crafted track with a classic video: that's a 9 whereas "Star 69" is also very strong but a 7

8 Shed Seven Cry For Help An excellent late hit for this 90s band with some very raw emotion delivered convincingly but in a classy and tuneful track

7 Elbow Red Debut hit for this Manchester band and a really nice one with a dance-like triple time and their usual heart on the sleeve style

7 Depeche Mode Dream On Lead single from their 10th album: I like the whispered start that cascades into a quite simple but twangy and wistful number

6 Spooks Karma Hotel Another strong hip hop track with a sung chorus, the main problem being that it's so similar in style and subject to their debut

5 Papa Roach Between Angels And Insects Another angry angst ridden hit from the nu metal band: effective though lacks the punchiness and catchy hook of "Last Resort"

5 K-Warren Featuring Lee O Coming Home Only hit for this UK garage producer featuring a Streets vocalist: doesn't stand out but it's a very nice track and a good tune

4 Starsailor Good Souls This almost has a ritualistic repetitive quality to it: all in all I find it one of their drearier efforts and I'm glad they'll have better

3 J Majik Featuring Kathy Brown Love Is Not A Game 1st hit for this UK drum and bass DJ featuring the US singer: good beat but I'm not fond of the strident repetitive vocal line

2 Joe I Wanna Know "Stutter" was a memorable song even if not entirely to my taste, whereas this is a very forgettable rather turgid 5 minutes

Agree with your choices of Orbital and Missy for best tracks of the week, and also agree that Survivor takes third. I do enjoy the Madonna track, and would rate it higher than you did, but I can see why you have the view you do of it.

 

 

For the most recent batch... Weapon of Choice is amazing and definitely my favourite of the week, however that S Club 7 track is also great - it's rare that I would buy something by a 'teen band' but I loved Don't Stop Movin' and couldn't resist buying it. Elbow and Depeche Mode also have great tracks in that batch.. and I can't remember the Spooks track but I somehow ended up buying the album so I guess I must have liked it at the time.

 

 

 

There are two great tracks in the next batch for me... intrigued to see if you will agree or not!

The chorus riff in the song 'Weapon of Choice' is iconic and much used on TV shows/adverts.

 

I wonder if Sak Noel was influenced by 'Star 69'.

Yup no argument from me, Don't Stop Moving still sounds great on a dancefloor, S Club's best record, 9/10. Sadly neither Fatboy tracks tickled my taste buds noticeably, oops! Cry For Help? OK. "Help!". I didn't chart it. It had all been downhill since the great Disco Down for Shed Seven, but they still one in 2003 and 2018 each to come.

 

Elbow didn't debut yet for me, I clearly didn;t see (or hear) Red. Depeche did though, hurrah a second one I rated, 8/10 for Dream On. Spooks is one I def remember liking, but how much did I rate Karma Hotel? 8/10 too! Papa Roach was one of those many US teen-appealing rock bands that never appealed to this 40-something. There's Last Resort, which I like, and then everything else, which I don't.

 

K-Warren? Nah. Starsailor though I almost always like, and Good Souls was a 7/10. J Magik, the old Trade's Description Act would've had this one under false advertising, and I Wanna Know was decent enough for a 6/10 from me. Joe was OK by my US-leaning tastes of the time.

 

I agree with dandy* 2 great tracks in the next batch, one of them the only actual video-single I ever bought, thanks to an amazing promo I never get bored of seeing. It's like Groundhog Day where repetition variation becomes endlessly fascinating.

 

So what was I rating in early May 2001 not on the review list? The US charts of course - Everclear's A.M. Radio was fab, appropriately, Moby & Gwen Stefani's Southside, which didnt even get a UK release, criminally. Evan & Jaron, which would get a UK release. Also Kings Of Convenience & Toxic Girl.

We’ve been running at about 95% for hits being on Spotify, and most of the other 5% are justly forgotten. Here though the 2 that aren’t on Spotify are 2 of my top 4. It’s R.E.M. at the top though with their 2nd consecutive great single after “The Great Beyond” last year.

 

9 R.E.M. Imitation Of Life The lead single from their 12th album "Reveal", and quite a poppy but brilliant track with poetic lyrics and a beautiful video

8 Bel Amour Bel Amour Only hit for this French electronic duo in a similar style to "Music Sounds Better With You": an exceplent pumping house track

7 Push Strange World A very good instrumental trance hit for Belgian DJ Mike Dierickx: I enjoy the way the synth sound intensifies as it progresses

7 Jason Downs Featuring Milk White Boy With A Feather Only Top 40 for this US singer and it's a quirky fusion of several styles including folk, rock and rap: messy but very charming

6 Wookie Featuring Lain Back Up (To Me) Their 2nd and final Top 40 and this isn't on the same level as the marvellous and unique "Battle", but a strong garage track

6 Turin Brakes Underdog (Save Me) 1st hit for this indie folk style band: this is a really enjoyable track and lyrically very sweet, but musically it's not outstanding

5 M.O.P. Cold As Ice 1st hit for this US hip hop duo using the Foreigner track's chorus: a clever idea though the shouty rapping is quite of its time

5 Jennifer Lopez Play I really like the funky electronic backing track on this: the song itself I can take or leave, particularly the shouty middle eight

4 Lindsay No Dream Impossible 15th for the UK in Eurovision and her only hit: a somewhat cheesy inspirational style song elevated slightly by the middle rap

4 Stephen Gately Stay Last of his 3 solo hits before going into musical theatre: it's a very unremarkable pop single but with quite a nice little tune

3 The Black Eyed Peas Featuring Macy Gray Request Line Debut Top 40 for the group who will have the biggest seller of 2003: it's unusual and intriguing but not entirely enjoyable

3 K-Ci And JoJo Crazy Their last hit and it's not a bad tune but has an over sung and wailing character to it that you sometimes get with US RnB

2 Alsou Before You Love Me Only hit for this Russian singer who was the Eurovision runner up last year, with a very run of the mill uninteresting pop song

Well my favourite two both placed in your top 3 so I'm happy enough with that - REM and Push are both great singles, probably REM's final true classic for me. Push had a handful of pretty great trance singles that were more on the progressive side of the genre, I still like them all today.

 

Out of the others, I'd forgotten all about Bel Amour but I do recognise it now I've just relistened. I wouldn't rate it quite as highly but it's decent enough. Turin Brakes were always pleasant enough too with Underdog being one of their better efforts

REM only ever had one chart-topper for me and it's Imitation Of Life, what a record, what a video 10/10. Yet not as remembered as their huge 80's and 90's tracks. No justice! Reveal was quite experimental, I rather liked the shift myself. Bel Amour and Push both show I'm not yet really on board with lesser-known cool dance tracks, neither charted. But Jason Downs was my other biggie, a 9/10 for an interesting track ahead of it's time. Multi-genre rap fusions became quite the thing down the line.

 

Wookie: "Waghrrrrrr". I got into Turin Brakes after this single passed me by, saw them live last year and they were smokin' hot, they might not have the massive singalong back catalogue but they can really play so it didnt make too much difference whether they were doing new tracks or old, they were all good. Got the last album. M.O.P. though left me Cold As Ice. I have the Foreigner single though.

 

Play is J-Lo on tick-over, a 7/10 but nothing special. Our Eurovision entry left me unimpressed 2/10, Stephen Gateley's sadly also passed me by, Black-Eyed Peas a very weak 3/10, K-Ci and JoJo meh, an Alsou Eurovision ran, and It's Raining Men a weak 4/10 being generous, it's def not The Weather Girls.

2001 week 18:

 

'Weapon of Choice' is fantastic, one of those songs that I didn't know by name for a while, but recognised the instrumental of as it was so prominently used in media while I was growing up. That would be my runner-up here too with 'Don't Stop Movin' also topping the group :wub: the best single S Club 7 ever put out and one of the strongest pop songs of the year. Ive not heard it in yonks, I guess the nearest comparison might be a bit Beck-ish or Crash test Dummies with rap and less deep-vocal. Turns out he's more of an actor/director since the hit... :o

A couple of great electronic tracks at the top here that feel quite Daft Punk influenced. There’s something particularly magical about “Days go By”: the vocals are quite deadpan and auto tuned and yet manage to be really striking.

 

9 Dirty Vegas Days Go By 1st hit for this UK house band that will win a Grammy: a brilliant gentle electronic track with really expressive autotuned vocals

8 Pepe Deluxe Before You Leave Only hit for this Finnish band used in an advert: excellent track with a unique funky sound and also effective processed vocals

8 Mark B And Blade Ya Don't See The Signs Only hit for this hip hop producer and rapper collaboration: a striking and memorable record with great power and rawness

8 Badly Drawn Boy Pissing In The Wind His 3rd straight 20-something peak and I love this one: a very simple but emotionally powerful ballad which shows his talent

7 The Divine Comedy Bad Ambassador A great but very different follow up to the enchantingly beautiful "Love What You Do" that demands much more vocal prowess

7 Oxide And Neutrino Up Middle Finger Their 3rd Top 10 and for me by far the best: I love the throbbing bubbling production and it has an infectious quick fire chorus

7 Stereo MCs Deep Down And Dirty Only 21st century Top 40 for this UK hip hop and dance fusion group: it's very enjoyable but similar to some of their earlier hits

6 Nelly Featuring City Spud Ride Wit Me His biggest hit so far with a very nice summery and relentlessly energetic RnB tune: it's just lacking the wow factor somewhat

6 Dumonde Never Look Back Only Top 40 for this German trance duo with a mixture of spoken and sung lyrics in both German and English: a strong track

6 King Adora Bionic 2nd and last Top 40 for them: this is also very enjoyable and has a strong melody but "Suffocate" had more emotional impact

5 My Vitriol Grounded 2nd Top 40 in a few months for them and again I preferred the 1st: a nice grungy track but with nothing to make it stand out

5 Fragma You Are Alive Another Top 5 for them with another different vocalist: well made and a good tune but missing the sparkle of "Toca's Miracle"

4 Eve Who's That Girl? 1st hit for this US rapper and a striking track: the rapping and production are great but the chorus is quite raucous and repetitive

4 Bon Jovi One Wild Night This sounds more like a 70s glam rock number than an 00s track: it's very much been done before but a pleasant enough listen

3 Scott And Leon Shine On 2nd and last hit for the garage duo: the track itself is decent but the rather brash and auto tuned vocals are slightly off-putting

3 Maria Rubia Say It Only solo hit for the "Everytime You Need Me" singer: an Alice Deejay type track with beepy sounds and fairly inconsequential

2 Jon B Don't Talk 2nd and last Top 40 for thus US RnB singer: it's not unpleasant but samey and bog standard without any memorable features

2 BBMak Still On Your Side 2nd Top 10 hit for this Geordie slightly rockier than your average pop band: this is very bland and too similar to their other hit

1 A*Teens Upside Down Their 1st original hit after some ABBA covers and their highest peak, but I find it terribly formulaic and lacking any charm

Well Fragma You Are Alive I remember liking from the time, I thought the vocalist sounded like Geri Halliwell. The synths before the last chorus are great especially.

 

Days Go By I remember from the time. It is sensible deep house. The vocal effects sound influenced by Chicane and Bryan Adams - Don't Give Up, a #1 from the previous year.

I was aware that 'Days Go By' was in an advert but not 'Before You Leave', so an all-electronic advert top 2 *.*

 

I adore 'Days Go By' so really pleased that it has topped the group for you <3 an essential sad banger and can see why Snake would compare to 'Don't Give Up'.
