July 2, 20241 yr I like that Rich has the same sympathy as me for Alisha's Attic :D Having their first 5 singles all peak between 12 and 14 is both unfortunate but also surely really difficult to achieve
July 3, 20241 yr Author I know not everyone shares my enthusiasm for “Mr Writer”. It’s obviously not a high energy track but I think there’s something really stately about it and I enjoy the instrumentation and the story. All in all it’s another slightly lacklustre group, but the next one is looking rather fabulous. 8 Stereophonics Mr Writer A song about a journalist who gave them negative reviews: I think it's a unique track that builds up to a passionate final chorus 7 Blackout {2001} Mr DJ Only Top 40 for this act: it's really quite a marvellous little garage tune that deserves to be on Spotify and better remembered 7 LeAnn Rimes I Need You A shame this missed the Top 10 as it's a classy power ballad very well performed and a worthy follow up to her chart topper 6 Craig David Rendezvous His smallest hit yet but the 5th Top 10 from "Born To Do It": quite understated but has a lovely smooth RnB character to it 6 Savage Garden The Best Thing The last hit before they split and I think this one is very enjoyable: it's catchy, energetic and heartfelt with a nice retro feel 5 The Offspring Want You Bad Quite a different style to the quirky "Original Prankster" and a more straightforward rock track: good tune but all on one level 4 Rhythmkillaz Wack Ass MF Only hit for them: the main hook sounds like the sound failing on a video call, but the Chocolate Puma inspired track is good 4 R. Kelly The Storm Is Over Now This doesn't excite me and is still something of a dirge, but equally it is quite a well done piece of uplifting gospel style fare 3 Mark Ryder Joy Only hit for this UK DJ that samples the "Tainted Love" keyboard riff: I find the sample rather jarring but the track's not bad 3 Tweenies Best Friends Forever This isn't a guilty pleasure for me like "Number 1": I still don't think it's bad at all for its genre but it needs slightly more oomph 2 Simon Free At Last Only hit for this mysterious mononymous DJ based around the famous Martin Luther King speech: I can't really get into this 2 Damage Still Be Lovin' You A terribly saccharine and dreary ballad here: shame that they've gone down the slushy soul route as their RnB had promise IwOMnIuAGOY 2001 Week 14: #666 07/04/2001 Crazy Town Butterfly 3 {3}-4-7-11-14-14-16-18-24-30-34-45-61->13 #667 07/04/2001 M&S Presents The Girl Next Door Salsoul Nugget (If U Wanna) 6 {6}-10-18-25-26-36-44-51-61-66-69-73-69->13 #668 07/04/2001 Chante Moore Straight Up 11 {11}-17-20-33-44-69-74R(3)->7 #669 07/04/2001 Britney Spears Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know 12 {12}-21-26-30-42-57-68-71->8 #670 07/04/2001 The Avalanches Since I Left You 16 {16}-24-41-53-59-73-52->7 #671 07/04/2001 Bee Gees This Is Where I Came In 18 {18}-26-40-51-64->5 #672 07/04/2001 Ocean Colour Scene Up On The Down Side 19 {19}-35-56->3 #673 07/04/2001 Architechs Show Me The Money 20 {20}-33-48-67-65R(16)->5 #674 07/04/2001 Hi-Gate Gonna Work It Out 25 {25}-47-75->3 #675 07/04/2001 Vincent De Moor Fly Away 30 {30}-46-72->3 #676 07/04/2001 Neil Finn Wherever You Are 32 {32}-66->2 #677 07/04/2001 Lonyo Garage Girls 39 {39}-58->2
July 4, 20241 yr Yes sorry Julian, I'm one of those Mr Writer not-fans, always found it dreary 3/10. Blackout, I must have had one, no memory. LeAnn Rimes (but only when she's singing) a fairly uneventful 5/10 from me, and Craig David a much-better 8/10 mark, though Rendezvous I couldnt hum any bit of it right now, unless I refresh my memory. The Best Thing really wasn't, a fairly common 5/10 for this period of Savage Garden. Want You Bad a 7/10, still enjoying The Offspring then, while Whack Ass MF got a slap from me. R Kelly, I do like a bit of gospel but by this stage even that couldnt grab Our Kelly more than a 5/10. Mark Ryder didn't bring me Joy, unlike Tainted Love, which did. The Tweenies continued to irritate grown-ups greatly, Simon was late on using the MLK speech on disc - Abba borrowed the title in 1979 and Timmy Thomas used it in a spine-tingling remix of Why Can't We Live Together in 1990. Just brilliant and completely unavailable anywhere due to copyright issues. Happily I have the original CD so must be one of the few people in the world that can still hear it. Damage by this time were really getting to be joyless. One great debut single and then nothing of worth.
July 4, 20241 yr Far from a vintage bunch here but my favourite in this group...wait for it...is Tweenies. The vocals are, as expected not good, but the lyrical sentiment is charming for children, and there's actually a very nice melody in the bridge and at the end of the chorus. Very early S Club Juniors, maybe their songs were partly inspired by Tweenies. Mr DJ was certainly an unlocked memory, I definitely haven't heard or thought about that since 2001, I suppose because it's not online to stream, was never on any major compilations and hasn't become a DJ classic of any sort, ironically. Good track indeed. I think my third favourite is Want You Bad, which was another bargain bin special I got from Asda in early 2001, but I like the track a lot. Intriguing that it has 230m streams on Spotify, nearly three times as many as Original Prankster. I guess this would have done much better if it had been a lead single. I Need You is decent enough, LeAnn sounds great on it, as is Rendezvous but maybe one single too many from that album - the quality was waning now. The Storm Is Over Now used to be on every reality show 'overcoming adversity' montage going but obviously isn't anymore, and The Best Thing was a particularly average single for Savage Garden (albeit another I got in Asda's bargain bin, ha). Mr Writer I find a tedious, droning listen myself but lyrically I like it, interesting concept - especially for a lead single. Really don't like any of the others. Wack Ass MF is annoying, Joy is not a great use of the sample, Free At Last doesn't work, and Still Be Lovin' You was a real bore. I liked the single after it though but we'll get to that soon enough. Edited July 4, 20241 yr by gooddelta
July 5, 20241 yr Author I really like most of this batch so separating them out was tough. It’s a fitting tribute to Shifty Shellshock who passed only last week that “Butterfly” comes top: I can’t think of many rapped nu metal tracks that I know more, and the Neil Finn track was a wonderful discovery. I know I’m supposed to like “Since I Left You” more, but while I do admire it I’ve always found the repeated vocal line slightly grating. 9 Crazy Town Butterfly Sampling an old Chili Peppers song and a US #1, a wonderful rap rock song with a heartwarming sincerity and infectious flow 9 Neil Finn Wherever You Are Last Top 40 for the former Crowded House frontman: it's a beautiful, romantic and slightly haunting track with great lyrics 8 Vincent De Moor Fly Away Only Top 40 for this Italian DJ: a very exciting track with strong vocals sections and a particularly electrifying instrumental 8 Bee Gees This Is Where I Came In Their only hit this century and for me an underrated gem: I love the aggressive strumming and the punchy passionate vocals 7 Ocean Colour Scene Up On The Down Side The opening track from their 5th album which didn't do well critically or commercially, but this is a lovely reflective track 7 M&S Presents The Girl Next Door Salsoul Nugget (If U Wanna) Only hit for this production duo with a house track that's quite similar to "Groovejet" but a great tune with strong vocals 6 The Avalanches Since I Left You 1st of a couple of hits for this acclaimed Australian electronic group: I love the instrumental touches but not the main hook 6 Hi-Gate Gonna Work It Out Last hit for this project and they've all been strong: this is maybe a little too similar to the others but still delightfully frenetic 5 Chante Moore Straight Up Only Top 40 for this US singer with an enjoyable and pretty catchy pop RnB song, but there's nothing that stands out about it 5 Britney Spears Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know The 4th single from the "Oops!…" album: I enjoy the Eastern flavoured instrumental and it's a nice but unremarkable ballad 4 Architechs Show Me The Money They won't have any more hits: this is similar to "Body Groove" but quite sugary and lacking the punch; still fairly enjoyable 3 Lonyo Garage Girls His only follow up to "Summer Of Love": it's a reasonably catchy number but the repeated "garage girls" is slightly grating 6FEDrU85FLE ddsZbrwI3u0 2001 Weeks 15 and 16: #678 14/04/2001 Emma Bunton What Took You So Long? 1 {1}-1-8-11-16-20-27-32-39-46-54-60->12 #679 14/04/2001 Lil' Bow Wow Bow Wow (That's My Name) 6 {6}-12-18-29-44-55-58-59-61->9 #680 14/04/2001 Modjo Chillin' 12 {12}-29-42-54-68-69-62-57->8 #681 14/04/2001 Ash Burn Baby Burn 13 {13}-32-38-51-66-67->6 #682 14/04/2001 Feeder Seven Days In The Sun 14 {14}-31-40-52-66R(2)-57->6 14/04/2001 Elvis Presley Suspicious Minds {2001} 15 {15}-21-39-60->4 #683 14/04/2001 Sound De-Zign Happiness 19 {19}-24-29-33-48->5 #684 21/04/2001 Janet Jackson All For You 3 {3}-10-13-15-21-26-33-41-52-57-64->11 #685 21/04/2001 Gabrielle Out Of Reach 4 {4}-6-4-5-7-6-11-13-21-25-27-34-40-54-60-67->16 #686 21/04/2001 Robbie Williams Let Love Be Your Energy 10 {10}-22-31-46-62-53-55-46-62-74R(5)-73->11 #687 21/04/2001 Sugababes Run For Cover 13 {13}-23-28-43-53-63-65->7 #688 21/04/2001 Faith Hill The Way You Love Me 15 {15}-24-25-40-49->5 #689 21/04/2001 Linkin Park Crawling 16 {16}-20-23-34-39-42-62-74->8 #690 21/04/2001 Norman Bass How U Like Bass 17 {17}-28-39-51->4 #691 21/04/2001 Toploader Only For A While 19 {19}-41-57-75->4 #692 21/04/2001 QB Finest Featuring Nas And The Bravehearts Oochie Wally 30 {30}-44-65->3 #693 21/04/2001 Jan Johnston Flesh 36 {36}-55->2
July 5, 20241 yr Crazy Town's Butterfly is one of the best singles of the year a strong 9/10, and RIP Shifty. Neil Finn I usually rated, long been a fan way back from the days of the fab Split Enz 1980 onwards, but this single was a 4/10 at the time. Vincent is my middle name and hypothetical popstar name, so envy must have forced me not to chart Fly Away. Bee Gees This Is Where I Came In was yet another career musical genre shift and was fabulous, 9/10. It was also their last single, as Maurice died soon after in hospital during an operation, and just when they were looking like reinventing themselves more in an acoustic singer-songwriter direction. Robin & Barry couldnt carry on without Mo following the shock. OCS still had one great single to come in 2010, but they were hit and miss for me in the noughties. This was a miss. Salsoul Nugget was my sort of dance tune, a firm 8/10, Since I left You was dreamy and gorgeous and an even-better 9/10, a strong still-well-know track. Hi-Gate Low-rate. Chante went Straight Up to my top 20, 8/10. Britney's was a 7/10 and that was being a bit generous, but her greatest moments were still 3 years away. Architects had passed their welcome, and yes a grating follow-up to the rather good Summer Of Love track.
July 5, 20241 yr The Avalanches' song has definitely stood the test of time, such a lush soundscape and another I bought at the time. Butterfly is the other obvious classic here, so sad about Shifty. My other favourite of the group is the Bee Gees song, I agree that it's underrated, I listened to this a lot at the time. Interestingly, on the same album was Sacred Trust, which was later covered by One True Voice (and Girls Aloud!). I remember a big fuss was made at the time on Popstars about the boys' song being a Bee Gees song, as if it was a key to huge success, but that track is a lot more naff than This Is Where I Came In. I find it weird that Garage Girls has twice the number of streams on Spotify that Summer Of Love has, I guess it's more enduringly popular with DJs but I don't see why. I don't rate it at all, and Summer of Love is much better. Show Me The Money was another average garage track for me. I used to like Salsoul Nugget at the time, I did think it would be quite a lot bigger at the time (a No.1 contender even) but that didn't happen. Quite liking Fly Away, decent trance that I only vaguely recall. Gonna Work It Out is produced well but doesn't really go anywhere, feels like the same section on loop throughout. Wasn't massively into Straight Up, the Neil Finn song doesn't do a lot for me sadly having just listened to it now, and Britney's was just ok, a bit meandering for me and although it was a shock at the time that it missed the top ten, maybe in hindsight it doesn't feel so surprising.
July 5, 20241 yr Week 13: only a few solid tracks here, like some others but the last two or three I can leave. The Offspring - Want You Bad – love the fast driven pace on this and probably rank it as my fave by them too. Stereophonics - Mr Writer – probably don't quite as love it now but still find it a rather underrated song of the Phonics. Video was great too. Tweenies - Best Friends Forever LeAnn Rimes - I Need You Simon Free - At Last Savage Garden - The Best Thing Blackout {2001} - Mr DJ Craig David - Rendezvous Damage - Still Be Lovin' You Rhythmkillaz - Wack Ass MF Mark Ryder - Joy Week 14: Crazy Town - Butterfly M&S Presents The Girl Next Door - Salsoul Nugget (If U Wanna) The Avalanches - Since I Left You – Discovered both of Avalanches via that dance thing Dan ran last year and were both great. This one has some cool stuff going on, Bee Gees - This Is Where I Came In – solid effort from them which I probably had heard once but couldn't remember. Ocean Colour Scene - Up On The Down Side – this was an enjoyable listen, not really taken notice of them usually but this was good. July 6, 20241 yr 'Up On The Downside' made it into my top 10 of 2001 - there isn't anything particularly original about it, but there never was with Ocean Colour Scene, it just happened to be their best tune I think. 'Since I Left You' was another highlight, the vocal line is cute - I ended up buying the single but preferred the shorter edit that radio played at the time.
July 7, 20241 yr Author I think “Crawling” was the 1st song that made me properly realise that nu metal wasn’t all about noise and could really convey emotion in quite a special way. And I know it’s nothing to write home about musically but I’ve always loved “Out Of Reach” and found it quite a moving ballad. 9 Linkin Park Crawling This is heavy rock at its best, when it manages to be emotionally compelling with light and shade: what a powerful track 9 Gabrielle Out Of Reach Used for "Bridget Jones's Diary" and my favourite ballad of hers: I love the bassline and the straightforward heartfelt lyrics 8 Sugababes Run For Cover A beautiful track right from the piano and violin intro, with some incredibly mature emotive singing from these teenagers 8 Ash Burn Baby Burn A change of pace from "Shining Light" but also excellent; I love the twinkly riff and it romps along with a really warm energy 7 Jan Johnston Flesh She's sung on many dance records but this is her only solo and very minor Top 40: this is a gorgeous ethereal trance track 7 Feeder Seven Days In The Sun Like Ash following up a gentler anthemic hit with a more traditional rock song: this has a lovely wistful summery feel to it 7 Lil' Bow Wow Bow Wow (That's My Name) Only hit for this 14 year old with the help of Snoop Dogg: rarely enjoy child hits but this is a very catchy rap number indeed 6 Janet Jackson All For You Another big hit and strong track for her: the "girls at the party" riff is fabulous and striking but the chorus is much weaker 6 Robbie Williams Let Love Be Your Energy A rockier 3rd Too 10 from "Sing When Your Winning" the intensity subtly builds up and it's good though not top tier Robbie 5 Emma Bunton What Took You So Long? 894th #1 and her 1st fully solo hit: it's a well crafted understated pop song and a nice listen without being anything special 5 Norman Bass How U Like Bass Only hit for this producer, another in the hard trance Warp Brothers style, with an enjoyable and punchy instrumental riff 5 QB Finest Featuring Nas And The Bravehearts Oochie Wally Only hit for this collaboration beteeen Nas and other rappers: rather raucous but a very infectious chorus at the same time 4 Sound De-Zign Happiness Samples Lisa Lisa And Cult Jam as did a certain recent hit; a nice dance track but nowhere near as good as what it samples 4 Modjo Chillin' The last we'll hear from them, unsurprisingly as this is OK but a less strong "Lady": the chorus in that is so much more punchy 3 Faith Hill The Way You Love Me A less country more straight pop song from her complete with autotune: listenable but quite ordinary and lacking character 2 Toploader Only For A While Amazingly "Dancing In The Moonlight" was still charting at this point, and was deleted to make way for this very flaccid track Gd9OhYroLN0 uxfAIVfmRa8 2001 Week 17: #694 28/04/2001 Destiny's Child Survivor 1 {1}-2-7-9-12-20-23-35-42-50-56-64-71->13 #695 28/04/2001 Ronan Keating Lovin' Each Day 2 {2}-3-8-11-16-27-34-43-56-63-60-62-63-68->14 #696 28/04/2001 O-Town Liquid Dreams 3 {3}-7-11-17-22-30-35-54-55-72->10 #697 28/04/2001 Missy Elliott Get Ur Freak On 4 {4}-5-9-12-13-19-29-37-46-55-68->11 #698 28/04/2001 Madonna What It Feels Like For A Girl 7 {7}-19-30-33-37-47-53-65-68-66R(3)-66->11 #699 28/04/2001 Snoop Dogg Snoop Dogg 13 {13}-22-37-43-59->5 #700 28/04/2001 Schiller Das Glockenspiel 17 {17}-27-50->3 #701 28/04/2001 Orbital Funny Break (One Is Enough) 21 {21}-35-47->3 #702 28/04/2001 Brian Harvey Straight Up No Bends 26 {26}-50->2 #703 28/04/2001 The Corrs Give Me A Reason 27 {27}-45->2 #704 28/04/2001 Airheadz Stanley (Here I Am) 36 {36}-58->2
July 7, 20241 yr Avalanches my pick for week 14, Salsoul Nugget would be second choice. Sugababes my fave in the latest batch, Run For Cover is their best single from their debut in my opinion
July 8, 20241 yr Weeks 15 and 16: Linkin Park - Crawling Ash - Burn Baby Burn Gabrielle - Out Of Reach - agreed top tier Gabrielle this was. Emma Bunton - What Took You So Long? Feeder - Seven Days In The Sun Janet Jackson - All For You Robbie Williams - Let Love Be Your Energy Sugababes - Run For Cover Jan Johnston - Flesh – great trance discovery. Lil' Bow Wow - Bow Wow (That's My Name) QB Finest Featuring Nas And The Bravehearts - Oochie Wally – short song but it's a groovy track. Faith Hill - The Way You Love Me – thought a dancey version would make a Faith Hill song sound good but it's very plain. Toploader - Only For A While Norman Bass - How U Like Bass Sound De-Zign - Happiness – starts off okay but yeah irritating and meh. Modjo - Chillin'
July 8, 20241 yr 2001 week 14: I agree that 'Garage Girls' is a huge step down from 'Summer of Love' - they rinsed the former on Kisstory and it became quite grating for me. The Architechs song does feel like 'Body Groove' mark II but with less charm, so not the best garage representation in this section oops! The Oops!... I Did It Again campaign was a real mixed bag for me. I love the title track and 'Stronger', 'Lucky' is alright and then 'Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know' was a damp squib to round off the era with unfortunately, have always found it plodding. Oh my, I recognise 'Since I Left You' but had no idea what the artist/title was until today :o that production is gorgeous. I do like 'Butterfly' as well but 'Salsoul Nugget (If U Wanna)' is my favourite of this batch  it's no wonder I'm such a fan with the 'Groovejet' comparison. It's not quite as good as that but still such a warm, uplifting funky house song.
July 8, 20241 yr Crawlin' was a good 7/10, Linkin Park improving as they go on. Out Of Reach didnt grab me much though, didnt see the film either, 4/10 oops. Run Fpr Cover was OK, a strong 6/10. Burn baby Burn a slightly better low 7/10, but Ash nowhere near as good as the Hudson-Ford 1974 hit of the same name. Feeder a stronger 7 than Ash, liked that one, L'il Bow Wow I actually charted. One week at 73, so a 3/10 then. And on to the really good pop stuff: Janet Jackson's All For You, huge in the USA and a 9/10 from me. One of Robbie's lesser chart-toppers for me, but he can still have a 10/10 at a whisker as 9 is for 2's to 10's peaks! Robbie is never bad. Never. Emma's UK chart-topper did the trick for me too, and a stronger 10/10 than Robbie's. Oddly, I much preferred Chillin' to Lady :o An actual 9/10 for a top 10 placing, though I havent heard it since it dropped out the charts! The Faith Hill hit was remixed fir the UK market, the US version from the previous year was a great 8/10, the UK desperate attempt to make pop country sound more chart-friendly here really wasnt as good but the song still managed to rise above it. I was long not a fan of remixing American hits to fit the latest trendy dance sounds in the UK, they just end up sounding cheaper and opportunistic financial decisions. Flaccid Toploader  Yeah, 5/10, and the practice of deleting big hits (and often bunging it on the B side of the next single) was a definite "no" from me.
July 8, 20241 yr Some really strong songs in this group. I think my favourite is Chillin'. To me this is such an uplifting and joyful slice of French house that I also prefer to Lady myself. My sister and I used to sing this one all the time and it deserved a top ten peak. Out Of Reach is a really stellar ballad, nice that Gabrielle released another classic straight after her big commercial return with Rise. The momentum was with her and she capitalised perfectly, a great soundtrack song. And Run For Cover is another brilliant single from that debut album from Sugababes, great harmonies and a captivating middle eight that switches direction in a similar way to Aqua's Turn Back Time. Crawling is great from Linkin Park, a real classic, and Burn Baby Burn was a very solid 1-2 punch from Ash after Shining Light. I wasn't quite as enamoured by Seven Days In The Sun, it's ok but no Buck Rogers. After What I Am, What Took You So Long? proved that Emma was the most capable Spice Girl at radio ready MOR pop, there's nothing to dislike about this song, it has a Corrs vibe to it that she sells well. And All For You was a great single for Janet, just incredibly catchy and a great sample use. Flesh seems nice, I don't really recall it from the time, The Way You Love Me was also just ok, I guess this was an attempt to try and get a Shania style hit with a remix but I prefer Faith doing straight down the line country. Let Love Be Your Energy was definitely one of Robbie's weaker songs from the period, I wasn't a fan of Bow Wow, QB Finest or Norman Bass (annoying vocal on this - especially the Boom Boom, Boom Boom Boom Boom bit). Happiness is a very limp use of that sample, Eliza did a much better job. And yes, that Toploader song is poor.
July 8, 20241 yr 'Crawling' is awesome, my favourite of the four Top 40 singles from Hybrid Theory - it nearly made my top 10 of 2001 until I realised Roots Manuva - Witness (1 Hope) had actually charted (it made #45 and my cutoff was the Top 75) and pushed it out. I actually quite like Sound De-Zign - Happiness, not one I really go back to but it has a nice progression to it. I was already familiar with the sample from Shena's version of 'Let The Beat Hit 'Em' from 1997.
