I remember 'Follow Da Leader' as an 10 year old at kids parties at the time. I didn't mind the song.

I haven’t put a single #1 as the top pick this year yet, so time to change that.

9

Liberty X

Just A Little

926th#1: the "Popstars" runners up rebooting with a remarkably catchy, intense and sensual song delivered with maturity

8

Rammstein

Ich Will

They'd been active since 1994 but this is the German group's 1st hit: a great track that must have inspired Baby Lasagna

8

Milk Inc

In My Eyes

Highest peaking hit for this Belgian dance group: a great track and another in that lovely emotion laden soaring vocal style

7

Jessica Garlick

Come Back

3rd in Eurovision and one of our best results this century for this "Pop Idol" finalist: a classy old style ballad beautifully sung

7

Green Velvet

La La Land

Only hit for this US DJ: it's very explicitly drug themed but I enjoy the trippy vibe and it's a catchy and interesting track

6

Pink

Don't Let Me Get Me

Her 6th straight Top 10: the song is quite standard and there's better to come but I love the lyrics about being a misfit

6

Heartless Crew

The Heartless Crew Theme

Only Top 40 for this UK garage act similar to So Solid Crew: I think the style will be going out of favour but a fun number

5

KMC Featuring Dhany

I Feel So Fine

Only hit for this Italian dance act: it might work better as an instrumental as I enjoy the production more than the vocal part

5

Enrique Iglesias

Escape

An upbeat song following up his big power ballad: quite standard but more up my street than that and I like the guitar riff

4

Fat Joe Featuring Ashanti

What's Luv?

Biggest hit for this US rapper: it's not bad and very much in the Ja Rule style with gruffly rapped verses and a sung chorus

3

A1

Make It Good

Their only Top 10 miss and last hit: a fairly uninteresting song unfortunately after they had shown so much promise lately

3

Luck And Neat

Irie

Their last hit without the DJ and MC in their name: it has their usual energy but I don't think the song is strong enough

2

The Reelists

Freak Mode

Their only hit aside from a So Solid Crew feature: bizarre as it's a soulful track but with lyrics about flashing one's bottom

2

R. Kelly And Jay-Z

Honey

Jay-Z's rapped parts on this aren't bad but R.Kelly's sung parts are so boring that overall it's not a very appealing track

If you are going by the DJ Philip UK version of the Milk Inc track, in the second half of the track I think it has possibly the biggest buildup in a chart vocal dance track until David Guetta x Nicki Minaj - Turn Me On! 'In My Eyes' is a better song though imo!

Another Belgian act, there were quite a few in the chart of 2002!

Also its only 2:41 so a trance song could still be a hit in todays less than 3 minutes song trend.

The original Milk Inc In My Eyes is interesting too with its flute instrumentation!

Oh and for Green Velvet - La La Land, shoutout to our very own @La La Land

I Feel So Fine is nice the chorus very much reminds of Jam and Spoon's 'Right In The Night'.

Edited by TheSnake

OK, straight into the good: Liberty X is a stylish 9/10, though I did overdose on it eventually, and Jessica's Eurovision from the days when it still seemed like we could knock off a potential winner fairly easily, Come Back was a good 9/10 too. A1, though while not a classic pop track like Caught In The Middle, was a pretty decent sign-off, 8/10.

That leaves some good singles for a 7/10: Enrique, and Fat Joe. A 6/10 as Pink treads water, The Reelists grabbed a forgotten 4/10 and I had the good taste to give R Kelly one week at 75 so a 3/10. The rest show how much my tastes and the Uk chart had diverged: DNC....

Just catching up on the last two sections while song contest hosting has been snatching away some of my musical free time!

'Follow Da Leader' is a pretty pointless listen for me when the superior aforementioned 'I Wanna Be U' exists.

'Rock The Boat' has been one of my biggest Aaliyah growers over the years! It's a great fit for her smooth, sultry voice. As John mentioned, it's tragic that the song is tinged with sadness due to the plane crash directly following the shoot for the accompanying music video. Gone way too soon. 💔

I agree that 'Escape' was a step in the right direction for Enrique following the cheesefest 'Hero', one of his better songs.

I'm also with you on 'I Feel So Fine', the trancey production really stands out (reminds me of 'Touch Me' a bit) but the vocal addition is a bit flat.

My parents' copy of M!ssundaztood is one of the first albums I remember properly getting into. The sentiments of 'Don't Let Me Get Me' are pretty relatable (well, maybe except being compared to Britney Spears x) but there's better to come musically from this era, love the back two singles.

'Just A Little' is one of the earliest songs I can vividly remember hearing on the radio a lot in the car. That's definitely my favourite of this section too wub I assumed it was Liberty X's debut for ages as it feels like the perfect launch pad, so was shocked to learn it was single #3. It's amazing how they turned the 'flopstars' narrative around and delivered a genuine smash. Blending pop with R&B was a smart lane and they look like stars in the video. Really catchy chorus, well suited production and a memorable middle 8 from Kevin too.

“Without Me” isn’t a big Eminem favourite for me, so again I’m looking further down the chart for the top highlights.

9

DJ Shadow

You Can't Go Home Again

Only his 2nd Top 40 and the 1st was in 1997: this is a really beautiful, calming and mesmerising instrumental dance track

8

Korn

Here To Stay

Their biggest hit to date and a reminder of how emotionally powerful this style of music can be when it isn't too shouty

8

The Electric Soft Parade

Empty At The End

The OCC have this as a double A side with "This Given Line": it's their last Top 40 and both great tracks in their usual style

7

Eminem

Without Me

927th #1: the very strong lead single from "The Eminem Show" with the "guess who's back" riff that will become iconic

7

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Spread Your Love

Their 4th single and biggest so far: this has a really strong baseline and swirling guitars and could easily be from the '90s

6

Rhianna

Oh Baby

Only Top 40 for this English singer and it's a really pretty track: shame a Barbadian artist with a similar name will come along

6

Atomic Kitten

It's OK!

A 3rd Too 3 hit since they really became superstars: nothing groundbreaking but an enjoyable song and I like the violin lines

5

Ian Van Dahl

Reason

Their 3rd hit as each one peaks lower than the last: the usual high emotion dance that works well but has a limited shelf life

5

Westlife

Bop Bop Baby

This entering at #5 was a shock after 10 #1s and a #2: it's a decent upbeat track in a similar style to "World Of Our Own"

4

A

Starbucks

Quite a surprise that they followed up the heavy but great "Nothing" with this very poppy number: it's fine but not special

4

Ms Dynamite

It Takes More

1st solo hit for this UK artist: really strong production but the melody isn't that interesting and the lyrics are a little tedious

3

Lauren Waterworth

Baby, Now That I've Found You

Only hit for this "Pop Idol" contestant signed by Pete Waterman: this '60s cover doesn't do much with the song but is sweet

2

The Saw Doctors

This Is Me

Only Top 40 this century for this Irish folk rock band: it's a very happy go lucky track that I don't really think goes anywhere

1

Billy Bragg And The Blokes

Take Down The Union Jack

Last Top 40 as lead for the protest singer and it's horrid:  just a bunch of political tropes strung together over a guitar line

I suppose so, yeah it is high emotion vocal hard dance which there was a lot of in 2002, that sort of dance did come back to the charts in 2012-3 tbh with the likes of Calling (Lose My Mind), Just One Last Time, Clarity, Take Me Home being the best examples etc. Unfortunately it seems unlikely to come back to the charts again soon.

I remember Reason from the time, I didn't like hard dance back then but the vocal I think I liked.

The DJ Shadow track is nice enough I suppose!

Lol at Rhianna

Edited by TheSnake

A - Starbucks is such a little bop to me, I know it has no real quality to it, but I just always found it catchy enough to enjoy, my favourite in that list, along with Eminem. I love Ms. Dynamite in her "A Little Deeper" era but "It Takes More" is far from the highlight, the lyrics aren't the deepest on an album that has some raw emotion and grit to it.

Gosh I know it's terrible but "We're on the ball" gets me in the mood when there is big football tournaments going, it's great fun!

10 minutes ago, TheSnake said:

Lol at Rhianna

Oh my god, I totally didn't click on to this being that.

I LOVE this song, it's actually my alarm clock song on my phone lol lol

It's OK by Atomic Kitten! wub One of those early-00s pop tracks I'll never not feel nostalgic listening to. 2002 was such a magical time for pop music. wub

Dj Shadow troubled not my charts of the time, and sadly Korn never grew in my fields, not even once. Electric Soft Parade padded in to my chart once, but not with this one, so things looking a little sparse so far. So, hooray for Eminem! Without Me top 5 and a fab video for a fine fun 9/10. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club usually got the revs from me, and Spread Your Love sneaked into my top 10 for an 8/10.

Rhianna Mk 1 surprisingly also went top 5 with Oh Baby, so thats a 9/10 without me having heard it in 23 years. I can only assume I was right about it! Atomic Kitten are just asking for an obvious comment, so here I am: "It's OK!" 4/10. Ian Van Dahl as per usual passed me by without noticing, and Westlife were robbed with Bop Bop Baby, genuinely their best record to date and a shock 9/10 from me. Obviously their usual fanbase couldnt recognise a fun pop record when they heard one.

I'm avoiding Starbucks and all the various USA mega-monopolies wherever possible these days. Elbows-up Canada! A? Eh? No, A. It grabbed a 7/10 though. Mine's usually a Hot Chocolate. Ms Dynah-migheetee? It Takes More, but another 7/10 from me. Baby Now That I've Found You is a great 60's pop great, and was given a completely different and wonderful take by Bluegrass act Alison Krauss in the mid 90's. Lauren Waterworth I would have thought was a made-up name until 5 minutes ago. I'm guessing it wasn't a great version.

The Saw Doctors usually buzzed off quickly as far as I was concerned, and This Is Me followed that trend. Billy Bragg, meanwhile, lives locally counting his royalties in a rich area, but thankfully has been mercifully not bothering the charts for 2 decades. He did have a heyday when he made some good records, mind you: 6 months in 1991 and one classic song in the 80's for the much-missed Kirsty MacColl. Mostly his awful tuneless posturing makes Bob Dylan sound like Karen Carpenter, by and large. Doesn't attend the annual Tolpuddle Festival these days.....

Atomic Kitten really took the MOR direction and ran with it post-'Whole Again'! I'm sad that I don't really think much of a group with a feline name but do agree that the violin lines of 'It's OK!' stand out positively. An early childhood memory around this time is my neighbour having a massive Atomic Kitten poster and then turning into a goth a few years later lol

'Spread Your Love' feels so familiar but looks like it's just 'Beat The Devil's Tattoo' and 'River Styx' by them that featured in Peaky Blinders. Sounding great as always anyway... that guitar work very quickly hooked me in too.

I didn't think much of 'Without Me' in the past but it clicked out of nowhere when it was back in the chart last year, good fun and self-aware. Poor Moby though!

DJ Shadow wub nice top pick - I remember Dandy put together a playlist of DJ Shadow/UNKLE songs for me to listen to years ago and it was a wonderful listen.

It’s World Cup season and this particular week definitely bore the brunt of it. I think this might be the lowest scoring batch since I started doing these, though it’s partly saved by a couple of good dance hits.

8

Orbital

Rest And Play EP

Just a 2 track EP with "Frenetic", a lovely track, and a new mix of the wonderful "Chime": all in all a well spent 15 minutes

7

Ferry Corsten

Punk

1st hit for this Dutch DJ under his own name rather than System F, and a really enjoyable driving instrumental trance track

6

Busta Rhymes/P Diddy/Pharrell

Pass The Courvoisier - Part II

1st credited Pharrell appearance on quite an interesting track: the "pass the Courvoisier" chant has a ritualistic feel to it

5

Bell And Spurling

Goldenballs (Mr Beckham To You)

Their 2nd and last hit: strong vocals and really quite a nice song; my favourite of the shower of football tracks here anyway

5

Will Young

Light My Fire

928th #1: this is based on the José Feliciano rather than The Doors version and it's nothing new but Will still sounds great

4

Dario G

Carnaval 2002

I do think the original of this is effective, but this seems to be a lazy remake: I can't detect any interesting new elements

3

Ant And Dec

We're On The Ball

Their last and biggest new hit and rather naff but not bad for a football track: I do enjoy the brass riff and it's quite catchy

2

Reel

You Take Me Away

2nd and last Top 40 for the Irish group: it has some quite nice folky instrumental elements but it's a terribly formulaic song

2

Ozzy Osbourne

Dreamer/Gets Me Through

His last solo Top 40: "Dreamer" is his dreadful attempt at "Imagine"; the other track is better but the vocals are not nice

1

The England Boys

Go England

"Go Ingerland!" to the tune of "Going Underground" doesn't even scan, and the singing is extremely raucous and ropey

1

DJ Otzi

Hey Baby (Unofficial World Cup Remix)

His last hit, and was already a rather obnoxious cover has been made even more grizzly by being turned into a football song

I think 2002 was the year there was an all out peak in unique World Cup themed novelty singles popping up in the chart. The trend definitely had died out by the next World Cup in 2006.

Elvis x JXL is the highlight of the other new entries, I have definitely played that a few times over the years. It's good for power walks I find.

'Punk' is good and like a precursor to 'Rock Your Body Rock'!

Omg so many interesting songs in the next batch.

Week 20
Not much standing out here for me here. I'm in the minority it would seem but I find the Ronan cover rather nice and the same goes for Bellefire. Was something for them to score two back to back #18 peak hits off the bat too. Lost Witness track is sounding okay and 'P.O.D.'s Is pretty good too.

Week 21

'Just A Little', 'Escape' and 'Don't Let Me Get Me' are all strong and 'Come Back' a really well sung ballad from Jessica, to think this would be the last time we'd sniff the top 3 in 20 years.. 'Ich Will' is also quite good, my sister is a major fan of Rammstein so have heard their music aplenty.

Week 22

'Without Me' is a fun Eminem song but of course the strongest one is to come near the end of the year. 'It's OK' is probably in my top 3 AK tracks, a really nice and melodic pop bop. Don't hate 'Bop Bop Baby', quite catchy in fact but also extremely naff too. 'Here To Stay' is a riot. 'Spread Your Love' is quite good too but the DJ Shadow song takes it for best song I hadn't heard of before.

Week 23

'Light My Fire' is a fine enough cover but Will's better stuff is to come. Not a Football fan but can't deny 'We're On The Ball' is a bit of goofy fun. My dad bought the Ozzy track (and the album too iirc) so it was spammed in the car a lot lol. 'Dreamer' is rather plodding though despite the nice production and deep lyrics. 'Gets Me Through' is defo the best track of the two, the bouncing riff is pretty good although his vocals can admittedly be unsettling. 'Punk' is a pretty good instrumental dance track and Oribtal's two songs here are decent too.

  • Author

Hard to order this group as there are plenty of classics and very little

that isn’t enjoyable. At the top I’ve put this glorious double A side from Paul Oakenfold with 2 marvellous and very different tracks, and my very favourite No Doubt song.

9

Paul Oakenfold

Southern Sun/Ready Steady Go

"Ready Steady Go" could easily be a Chemical Brothers track while "Southern Sun" is a wonderful piece of ethereal trance

9

No Doubt

Hella Good

They won't make the Top 10 again despite some great singles: this has wonderful gritty production and retro style melodies

8

Elvis Vs JXL

A Little Less Conversation

929th #1: this had been a very unremarkable Elvis track but the remix really brings it to life and up to date for new listeners

8

Jimmy Eat World

Sweetness

Another marvellous incredibly catchy hit for them: the opening "If you're listening (whoa oh-oh-oh-oh)" has great power

8

Chad Kroeger Featuring Josey Scott

Hero

Only hit for Josey with the Nickelback frontman for the "Spiderman" film: this is a surprisingly excellent and powerful song

7

Sophie Ellis-Bextor

Get Over You/Move This Mountain

"Get Over You" is catchy but "Move This Mountain" is the star track here: it's unique and has a really classy presence to it

7

Kylie Minogue

Love At First Sight

Her 3rd Top 3 of this incredibly successful campaign for her: this is a sweet, uplifting track with a light sparkly feel to it

7

Papa Roach

She Loves Me Not

Their 3rd and last Top 40: this doesn't have the raw energy of "Last Resort" but it's a very good song in a more subtle way

6

Layo And Bushwacka!

Love Story

1st hit for this UK DJ duo that will be back in a different form: this is enjoyable in its own right with the wailing vocals

6

Paffendorf

Be Cool

Only Top 40 for this German DJ group: it's a very effective trance track with a strong melody, without being remarkable

6

Moony

Dove (I'll Be Loving You)

The singer from DB Boulevard's "Point Of View" with her only solo Top 40: she has a wonderful voice and it's a nice track

5

Puddle Of Mudd

Blurry

Their only Top 10 hit and it is a strong, emotive, radio friendly and tuneful rock song but somehow is missing something

5

Badly Drawn Boy

Something To Talk About

Very much ties in with the "About A Boy" film, and nothing spectacular but still a nice wistful track with warm production

5

Peaches

Set It Off

1st hit for this Canadian electro punk singer with a similar style track to "Hella Good", though I find it a little minimalistic

4

Scooter

The Logical Song

Biggest hit for this German techno band covering a 1979 #7 hit: the track does work well but there isn't that much to it

4

Spunge

Jump On Demand

Only Top 40 for this group described as a ska punk band that sound quite like Madness: the vocals are raw but it's not bad

4

Agnelli And Nelson

Everyday (Alex Gold 2002 Mixes)

Last Top 40 for the DJ duo and a remix of a 1999 hit that makes it more explicitly a club track, but doesn't add that much

3

The Libertines

What A Waster

1st hit for them and you can hear the beginnings of how they will sound on their bigger hits but this one is a bit of a mess

3

Starchaser

Love Will Set You Free (Jambe Myth)

Only hit for this DJ act who seems to be trying to emulate Stardust, but the track is a little fomulaic and doesn't quite hit

2

Ludacris

Rollout (My Business)

This has quite similar sounding production to the excellent "What's Your Fantasy" but manages to just be a bit of a racket

The Kylie track is nice enough.

Oh I do know 'Southern Sun' its quite Olive reminiscent.

'Hero' is a good song, Chad and Nickleback did start off rather good musically at least!

I was reminded of Paffendorf - Be Cool as the US President tweeted this week 'BE COOL' in reaction to the effect of his tariffs. The synth riff of Paffendoff track is quite 2012 EDM as I think gooddelta said before about the track.

Dove (I'll be Loving You) I remember from the time; very nice track.

Scooter's version of 'The Logical Song' is great I think but not for everyone!

'Everyday' is a very nice vocal dance track.

Oh no, I love the Starchaser track especially the original non-vocal Jambe Myth version such nice soothing Balearic house production!

'Love Story' is better in the later mashup version.

'Set It Off' is definitely ahead of its time.
