No huge standouts here but nice to be able to give JJ72 a win with their last Top 40.

8

JJ72

Formulae

Already their last Top 40 but I love this: such a powerful vocal in the middle and a gorgeous quiet part towards the end

7

The Wildhearts

Vanilla Radio

Their 1st hit for a while but they began in 1989: this is a very enjoyable relentless rock number perfect for moshing

7

Jakatta Featuring Seal

My Vision

Last big hit for either of these artists and a great combination: Seal's smooth vocalsĀ  complement the chilled house style

7

Thick D

Insatiable

Only hit for US DJ Eric Miller: this is a very strong retro sounding track and I particularly enjoy the electric guitar solo

6

No Doubt

Underneath It All

A very different style from their last couple of singles with a gentle ballad, but it's very nice and a sweet performance

6

Feeder

Come Back Around

This is musically quite gentle but it's the 1st single since their drummer's death and the lyrics to this are very poignant

6

The Libertines

Up The Bracket

Their peaks will improve with all their first 5 hits: I found their debut rather messy and this is much more like their sound

5

Holly Valance

Down Boy

As a 1st fully original hit this isn't bad from her: IĀ  like the ebb and flow of the production far more than the song itself

5

LeAnn Rimes

Life Goes On

This was a lead single so its #11 peak will have been a disappointment: it's a very pretty flowing song but unremarkable

4

John Otway

Bunsen Burner

A novelty song based on "Disco Inferno" full of puns and innuendo: it's great fun though doesn't bear that many listens

4

Energy 52

Cafe Del Mar {2002}

A different version reached #12 in 1998: listening to them both side by side I prefer that and can't see what this brings

3

Ian Van Dahl

Try

This is quite a nice tune but it's so obviously an entirely recycled formula at this stage that the enjoyment is diminishing

3

Irv Gotti Presents The INC Featuring Ja Rule, Asha

Down 4 U

This is the only hit directly credited to this US producer who died recently: despite the featured stars it's quite boring

2

Stamford Amp

Anything For You

This band came about as a result of the children's "Saturday Show" on TV: their only Top 40 and a pretty cheesy song

I remember 'Bunsen Burner' from other pupils quoting it in chemistry classes when we used bunsen burners when I was at school. The video reminds me of Thomas Dolby.

I remember Jakatta and Seal's 'My Vision' a lot on the radio at the time; nice track.

Ian van Dahl's 'Try' is better than 'Reason' I think.

Edited by TheSnake

Nice to see JJ72 get a medal slot, I always liked them but they came and went and that was it, all over. Formulae gets a 7/10 from me. Vanilla Punch is a decent 6/10, The Wildhearts were fun at their best. My Vision is very good track, nice to see Seal still in the charts, 9/10. Thick D I have entirely forgotten but I rated Insatiable 7/10 too. Ditto No Doubt too, I liked Underneath It All and Gwen Stefani is still putting out fab ballads, her recent All Your Fault is up there with the best of No Doubt.

Feeder I'm in agreement too, 6/10, but we diverge over The Libertines, always a bit too shambolic for my tastes, DNC. Holly Valance stretching out her 5 minutes of fame with a 5/10, Life Goes On was an underwhelming LeAnn return indeed - 4/10 from me. Bunsen Burner I remember getting excited over, having John Otway back in the charts was totally unexpected. It was good too! 8/10!

Cafe Del Mar is in my charts right now - for Pete Tong. As this DNC, it's safe to assume it's not as good as Pete's version, that's a strong 7/10. Ian Van Dahl's Try, for once, I liked - maybe I gave in to the formula at this stage, but it grabbed a 6/10. Irv Gotti I also liked and another 7/10, which leaves Stamford Amp. I was 44 and knew nothing of the track, the show or it making the charts! Not even my then-10-year-old nephew ever mentioned anything to do with it. He would have been outside playing! I must mention it later today to him he can play the video for his 6-year old....šŸ˜„

I love the Thick D track, I liked the LeAnn one at the time but not quite sure I feel the same today, Feeder's is up there with their best and I also love the Holly one despite... well, you know.

'My Vision' is utterly fab, and I remember with 'Try' there was a different remix I used to hear when they played it on Radio 1 that's better than the slightly bland/formulaic main one. I believe it was this one:

Right better start catching up!

Week 39:

The aggressive, disturbing lyrics of 'Cleanin' Out My Closet' are a difficult listen so I don't blame you for putting that one last. Eminem has some great darker moments in his catalogue ('Stan' particularly stands out to me) but agree that this one is a miss.

Ooh Busted have arrived! My dad bought their debut album and I used to rinse that CD in my room a lot before school. In 2002 I had two female neighbours who were both a bit older than me and they used to squabble over who could claim Charlie from Busted as their 'boyfriend'. I don't think I was too bothered about whoever they parasocially assigned me from the group as a 5-year-old, lol. Back to the music and 'What I Go To School For' is the weakest link of the singles run for me, agreed it's not too interesting musically and the lyrics are not for me either. But they definitely have better to come!

Today I learned that Oxide & Neutrino sampled Kraftwerk's 'The Man Machine'?! Obviously classic production but I think I need to immediately scrub some of those lyrics from my brain, especially the "slapper" and "Napa" rhyme lol

I posted this quite recently in the #7s rate thread but I discovered that Aqualung song via 'I've Been Secretly Falling Apart' by Owsey, Jernalism & Resotone, a beautiful song that heavily samples it; this gave Chez a bronze in BJSC a decade ago wub sadly that version has never been on Spotify, which lead me to the original more, which is also wonderful.

'Just Like A Pill' is my top pick of this section as well and my favourite P!nk song overall šŸ˜ I remember discovering it while at a sleepover, we played SingStar and I was immediately hooked on the electric feel of this song. I soon realised that my parents owned the M!ssundaztood album and it became an early highlight of my music listening. It's surprising that 'Just Like A Pill' was as late as single #3 in the campaign but better late than never, an excellent second U.K. #1 for her *.* love the vulnerability and inner strength on display throughout. That determined chorus packs such a punch!

Week 40 catch-up:

I'm a huge Beatles fan of course but I've always struggled to get into 'The Long and Winding Road', mostly not sold on the Spector production. Unsurprisingly, the Will and Gareth version does not do much to convert me! Agreed that the Gareth take on 'Suspicious Minds' is preferable.

'Little By Little' is ageing brilliantly. It is another from this era that is eclipsing 'The Hindu Times' for me now, on top of 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out'. I think I gravitated towards 'The Hindu Times' so instantly because I'm a sucker for that psychedelic sitar sound, but the emotional pull of the other two is hooking me in more long term, as much as I still enjoy that.

Let Go was the first ever studio album that I bought wub I'm only realising now that my initial music taste was very pop-rock heavy - with Avril, Busted and P!nk's 2002 albums all being the earliest examples of full projects that piqued my interest. I'm glad that Avril and her production team The Matrix found a way to hone her pop-punk intentions successfully, after initial label disapproval of her guitar sound, as this two-faced anthem is a strong debut.

I am aware of 'Silver Screen Shower Scene' as Rollo sent the Thin White Duke mix of it to BJSC way back in 2017, where it criminally DNQed! Love the electroclash production and Miss Kittin's vocals, who also appears as a feature on Golden Boy's 'Rippin Kittin' in 2002, but that sadly only gets to #67!

Week 41

'Down Boy' is good enough but it's not one I was ever really massive on. 'Bunsen Burner' is quirky to say the least. 'My Vision' is lush and Seal sounds great on vocals and also find the LeAnn Rimes track to be fairly decent as well.

'Come Back Around' is a nice track and tribute to their drummer and another top song from No Doubt. 3/3 this era for me. 'Formulae' is a interesting little discovery and 'Vanilla Radio' is sounding enjoyable indeed.

Lots to enjoy in this bumper group. Very occasionally a pop song captures something utterly magical and ā€œThe Ketchup Songā€ does that, though it’s topped by my favourite Coral song. But there’s also Foos and Manics at their best and a very intriguing Lemon Jelly track that took a few listens to click for me.

9

The Coral

Dreaming Of You

This is where they really found their sound I think: it has an infectious rhythm and the vocals have a raw hopeless energy

9

Las Ketchup

The Ketchup Song (Asereje)

936th #1: the only his for this Spanish group and a stupendously catchy song with a delightful nonsense Spanish chorus

8

Foo Fighters

All My Life

One of their biggest and most commercial hits: the almost whispered verses and explosive chorus work brilliantly well

8

Lemon Jelly

Space Walk

1st hit for this UK electronic duo: a beautifully experimental and other worldly with NASA space mission voice snippets

8

Manic Street Preachers

There By The Grace Of God

The Rich guitar sound here reminds me of Depeche Mode: the lyrics are great and the chorus is emotionally powerful

7

Richard Ashcroft

Check The Meaning

The lead from his 2nd solo album and one of my favourites of his: it feels like he's basking in the rich orchestral texture

7

The Vines

Outtathaway

Their biggest hit to date and it's great: this could almost be early Beatles with its retro feel and slightly scratchy vocals

7

Trinity-X

Forever

Only hit for this UK DJ act: a very enjoyable trance track and the auto-tuned, slightly tortured female vocals work well

6

PPK

Reload

Their 2nd and last hit: the style is very similar to "ResuRection" but it's still good, and I like the slightly foreboding strings

6

Badly Drawn Boy

You Were Right

His only Top 10: the storytelling is beautiful and makes it, but musically it's a little like a washing machine going round

6

S Club Juniors

New Direction

Their most interesting track for me with elements of Erasure and Kylie "Can't Get You…": I almost forget their age here

5

Doves

Caught By The River

This has a very nice serene feel,Ā  but it passes me by quite easily: it doesn't have the punchy quality of their last 2 hits

5

Big Brovaz

Nu Flow

1st hit for this UK RnB group: this is a catchy poppy tune with bouncy production and works well though I don't love it

4

Nelly Featuring Kelly Rowland

Dilemma

937th #1: I admire it when someone reads the market perfectly and nails a worldwide smash but it's such a basic chorus

4

LL Cool J

Luv U Better

He's already on his 9th album; this samples Notorious BIG and is unremarkable but has quite a pleasant chilled out feel

3

Samantha Mumba

I'm Right Here

Her 6th straight big hit and now she vanishes from the charts forever: another catchy one but it's lacking in substance

3

Faith Hill

Cry

Her last hit here: she certainly gives the performance plenty of welly but it's quite a beige and charmless power ballad

2

Nakatomi

Children Of The Night {2002}

Only hit for this Dutch happy hardcore act, originally from 1996, and it's really naff to my ears but fun to see it here

2

Syleena Johnson

Tonight I'm Gonna Let Go

Only solo hit for this US RnB singer who'll appear on a much bigger Kanye hit: quite dull and bog standard for its genre

2

Nick Carter

Help Me

Only solo hit for this Backstreet Boys member: it's quite limp pop and feels like something they might have rejected

Dreaming Of You was my first top 10 for The Coral, with 3 bigger ones in following years, I'd rate it a strong 8/10, so more or less agree, but I lean more towards the sheer cheesy joy of Ketchup Song, still sounds great played loud in a bar or club on a rowdy alcohol-fuelled holiday. 9/10. Ditto Foo Fighters first top 10 for me and another 8/10. Space Walk sounds like I would go for it - yet DNC!

Manic Street Preachers more of a middling track for me, 6/10, but Richard Ashcroft is a great one, Verve-tastic monster number one for me, 10/10. I'm in agreement with The Vines, 7/10, but Trinity-X a more modest 5/10, and PPK an even more modest 4/10. Badly Drawn Boy often passed me by, and did so here here, and I'm shocked to find out New Direction was an actual good record for the S Club Juniors - an easy 8/10 from me. It's what's in the grooves counts....😮

Doves mildly pleasant 4/10, and I'm with the 5/10 for Nu Flow, having expected it would have been lower. Nelly & Kelly's Dilemma grabbed a 9/10 at the time, having heard it now and again over the years I'm knocking it down to 8/10. LL Cool J scrapes a 3/10, but Samantha Mumba delivered her best record for me with I'm Right Here - it grabbed the number one spot and a 9/10 rating. The rest all DNC so would all feature presumably a similarly low-end slot!

That top 2 is perfect, easily the standouts of this group.

Dreaming of you is a perfect upbeat slice of this genre, fun, short and snappy.

Ketchup song is just pure cheese and joy, very infectious and has always been my guilty pleasure. Remember going out to buy the single cheer

My favourites since I last commented: 'Little By Little' - I prefer this one to SCYHO which I liked at first but found it dragged a bit after a while - 'Someday' - all the singles from The Strokes' debut were great, including sub-Top 40 'The Modern Age' - and 'Dreaming Of You' - a fine revival of the 60s Merseybeat sound. Lots of good stuff coming in the next batch, including another of my top 10 of the year...

My mum loved Big Brovaz - Nu Flow at the time and I think its a great track, much of the lyrics though are just them boasting about themselves and their record sales!

Las Ketchup was iconic because of the dance I don't know if its been mostly forgotten now.

Dilemma with Nelly and Kelly also iconic at the time.

Trinity X is a good eurodance track.

I detest 'Dilemma', I think use of the word "boo" is probably a big part of it. It makes me heave.

15 hours ago, TheSnake said:

Las Ketchup was iconic because of the dance I don't know if its been mostly forgotten now.

I'd hardly say so? It's still well-known and one of those songs people immediately recognise if it comes on.

I know the follow up is probably better regarded hit I’ve always loved ā€œLike I Love Youā€. It drew Jacko comparisons at the time but I find it very authentic. There’s some other great stuff entering towards the bottom of the chart but none of it quite beats JT.

9

Justin Timberlake

Like I Love You

His 1st solo hit and a wonderfully punchy, well composed statement of intent with excellent vocal range and charisma

8

DJ Shadow

Six Days

His last Top 40 sampling the anguished vocal from Colonel Bagshot's "Six Day War": another very atmospheric track

8

Paul Masterson Presents Sushi

The Earthshaker

Only hit for this DJ and a very hypnotic and effectiveĀ  8 minute dance track that builds up over a repeated spoken line

8

The Polyphonic Spree

Hanging Around

1st hit for this US band known for combining orchestral and choral styles with rock: this is a joyous and charming track

7

Who Da Funk Featuring Jessica Eve

Shiny Disco Balls

1st hit for this DJ act with a really intriguing dance track with a spoken hook that builds up to a shout: it is very catchy

7

U2

Electrical Storm

One of my favourite U2 tracks from this time, with lovely lyrics linking emotions to the weather and natural beauty

6

Hell Is For Heroes

Night Vision

1st Top 40 after a couple of misses for this UK band with an emotive heavy rock track that's good but quite intense

6

Blue

One Love

The lead from their 2nd album missing #1 in a competitive week: nothing new but a strong song in their usual style

6

Groove Armada

Purple Haze

Sampling a Status Quo song, a reggae style track with a ritualistic hook that's slightly repetitive but well produced

5

Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Zephyr Song

By far the lowest score I've given a Chilies hit: it's still good but feels a little flat and lacking their usual panache for me

5

Idlewild

Live In A Hiding Place

The follow up to the excellent "American English" this is nice but feels too much like a slightly lesser version of that

4

The Streets

Don't Mug Yourself

Very different in style from their other singles so far and feels like the precursor to "Fit But You Know It": jolly but silly

4

Turin Brakes

Long Distance

This was the lead from their 2nd album: the follow up will be much bigger and this feels like it's lacking a proper tune

3

The Calling

Adrienne

Their 2nd single: unlike the 1st which is certainly well remembered, this is so nondescript that there's not much to say

2

Rosie Ribbons

Blink

1st hit for this "Pop Idol" 6th place contestant with a very uninspiring andĀ  slice of typical early '00s style RnB pop

Like I Love You is a great debut track, I liked the untypical song structure and beats, and sort of carries on from the later NSync hits which added in funk/rnb into the mix. 9/10. DJ Shadow had me rushing to my A to Z: to no avail DNC. Paul Masterson ditto. Polyphonic Spree I very much liked though, Hanging Around, a quirky top 10 8/10 from me. Electrical Storm was a U2 goodie, 9/10, I still rated a lot of their singles in the early 2000's.

One Love is decent Blue and a strong 8/10. Purple Haze is a Groove Armada track I missed out on, but I like the description of it so playing it now: well, that's an oddity! Toastin/rap reggae-rock, deserves a 5/10 for being different. Never would have guessed the Quo sample. Zephyr Song was during peak Red Hot Chili Peppers for me, I think I got a copy of the album off a workmate fan of them. 9/10 though I think I over-rated it a bit. More of an 8 really.

I always liked Turin Brakes stuff, especially the slower tracks, 7/10 for Long Distance. Went to see them at a gig a couple of years back at the Bournemouth Firestation on a mate's recommendation, they were really kicking it, bought the previous album , downloaded the new song, and we got tickets for November. Their songs often take a while to click but they have class and musicianship on their side. The Calling, snap, 3/10. Blink got a 4/10, so marginally better.

'Electrical Storm' was the track to make my top 10 of 2002 from that batch - U2 could still come up with some gems in the early 2000s and William Orbit's production gives it that awake-at-4am feel before it bursts out in the second chorus. 'Like I Love You' was a great solo debut with one of the best Neptunes productions, and I like 'The Zephyr Song' a lot - I do get that it might feel overshadowed by some of their other singles, but the Chili Peppers rarely put a foot wrong around this time. I was less bothered by the Idlewild one so concur with the middling score there. Lots of guitar based stuff that week though, and hardly any the following week, funny how the release schedules ended up like that.

  • Author

A rather poor week here though I do like the 2 new entries in the Top 3 in different ways. The Pearl Jam track was written after a tragedy at one of their gigs in 2000, and is a lovely poignant composition.

8

Pearl Jam

I Am Mine

Their last hit to date: a really lovely warm track with strong lyrics about self reassurance and a gentle dance like feel

7

DJ Sammy And Yanou Featuring Do

Heaven

938th #1 and 1st hit for this Spanish DJ: dance covers often take the sparkle out of a track but this one adds sparkle

7

Madonna

Die Another Day

The theme to the Bond film: surprisingly experimental and electronic with heavy auto-tune, but a well produced track

6

McAlmont And Butler

Bring It Back

Their last hit with the usual rich production and smooth soulful vocals: brings a smile to the face but isn't remarkable

5

Romeo Featuring Christina Milian

It's All Gravy

His 2nd and last hit, and after the dreadful 1st this is surprisingly enjoyable, with a strong chorus and piano backing

4

Amerie Featuring Ludacris

Why Don't We Fall In Love

1st hit for this US RnB singer: not very compelling compared to what she'll have to come but I really like the vocals

4

Shaggy

Hey Sexy Lady

His last big hit: I quite like the Latin feel, the trumpets and the intense beat, but overall there isn't a whole lot to it

3

Jan Wayne

Because The Night

1st hit for this German producer: I'll stick with the gorgeous original but this does at least retain some of its charm

3

Craig David

What's Your Flava?

His 2nd album lead and a let down as it only matched the peak of his previous 5th single: it's style over substance

2

Whitney Houston

Whatchulookinat

Her last hit for 7 years, produced by Bobby Brown and aimed at her critics, but the song doesn't have much of a tune

2

Mad'house

Holiday

Exactly the same formula as the "Like A Prayer" cover with the tinny beat; unsurprisingly we won't see them again

1

Soda Club Featuring Hannah Alethea

Take My Breath Away

Another dance cover of an '80s classic: you don't even need to hear it to know that it will sound naff and emotionless

1

Tom Jones

Tom Jones International

His last solo Top 40 with a nursery rhyme style chorus and lines like "5, 6, better lock up your chicks": dreadful song

I Am Mine grabbed a week at 66 in my charts, almost certainly based on one listen on the one chart rundown it featured in. It's better than that, though, let's say 5/10 based on a second listen. Don't need to listen to DJ Sammy though, I always preferred the Bryan Adams original, but it was cheesy cheerful enough for a 7/10. Die Another Day was a Bond oddity, and not amongst her better movie songs, but it's still the best track of the week for me at 8/10.

Bring It Back, alwasy enjoy McCalmont Butler, so another 8/10 here, It's All Gravy grabs a 3 from me, Amerie is one thing away from not getting a DNC, and Shaggy is a decent 7/10, I gave a credit to Brian & Tony Gold on Hey Sexy Lady, former hitmakers, Because The Night is worth a 4/10 for the song, and Craig David managed a fulsome 5/10 and lowest-placed track to date from me.

Whitney was at the tail-end of her best era for me, and got a pretty good 8/10 for Whtatchulookingat, Mad'House impressed me not, Soda Club had no fizz, and Tom The Voice could only muster a single week at 75 in my chart, so a 3/10.
