This Friday the 1996 shows resume with the 21st and 28th June shows.

We will then be skipping the next 2 shows on the 5th and 12th July - there are rumours on other forums that there are compliance issues with the episodes relating to strobing.

Instead, next Friday we will have the 19th and 26th July episodes.

Sorry just catching up.

Don't Stop Movin is joyous. I prefer it to Dreamer too. Blurred is a very good dance track too, its like the mid 90s in a bottle mixing Britpop and dance.

The Day We Caught The Train is great too, a bit of an epic.

22ND JUNE

sddefault.jpg

Another week passes and another week nothing can come close to the sales juggernaut that is the Fugees “Killing Me Softly” which sold another 173,000 copies in shops to raise its 21 day tally to 525,000 which sets it on course to a million seller. Its nearest challenger does change however with Peter Andre rising 3-2 but his sale of 65,000 shows just how far he’s lagging behind The Fugees.

Highest new entry of the week comes in at No 3 (64,000) for Mariah Carey with “Always Be My Baby”- this is her 11th straight top 10 single and means that the last time she missed the top flight was all the way back in early 1992. That’s impressive but not a patch on her US success where this song became her 11th No 1 tying her with Madonna and Whitney Houston in the all time list.

Written off by some boyband Let Loose prove they have more sticking power than most. After a hugely successful debut period they released “Everybody Say, Everybody Say” penned by 80s popstar Nik Kershaw which only made No 29 and caused the delay of the second album. They’ve plumped for a cover of Bread’s 1970 No 5 hit “Make It With You” to resurrect their career and it’s done the trick coming in at No 7 (34,000) to become the third top 10 single for them in 2 years.

Baddiel/ Skinner/ Lightning Seeds drift 2-4 (50,000) outpacing the fast rising Celine Dion 8-5 (46,000) as the “Up Close & Personal” movie from which it’s taken got its UK premiere. Livin Joy get pushed out 5-6 (38,000), Pianoman drifts 6-8 (31,000), Ocean Colour Scene fall 4-9 (30,000) with Tony Rich Project slipping 9-10 (27,000).

1- KILLING ME SOFTLY- The Fugees (173,000)

2- MYSTERIOUS GIRL- Peter Andre Ft Bubbler Ranx (65,000)

3- ALWAYS BE MY BABY- Mariah Carey (64,000)

4- THREE LIONS- Baddiel/ Skinner/ Lightning Seeds (50,000)

5- BECAUSE YOU LOVED ME- Celine Dion (46,000)

6- DON’T STOP MOVIN- Livin Joy (38,000)

7- MAKE IT WITH YOU- Let Loose (34,000)

8- BLURRED- Pianoman (31,000)

9- THE DAY WE CAUGHT THE TRAIN- Ocean Colour Scene (30,000)

10- NOBODY KNOWS- Tony Rich Project (27,000)

29TH JUNE

Euro 96 fever truly gripped the country last week with England qualifying out of the group stages and then beating Spain in the Quarter Finals to set up a meeting with Germany in the semi-finals this week. What has this to do with the charts? Well it is responsible for a 69% surge in sales for “3 Lions” which pushes the single back up 4-2 (85,000) and should the national team win that Semi-Final then it may yet return to No 1. For now though it is still a long way off with sales of the Fugees “Killing Me Softly” only slightly off at 160,000 (-7%) sending the song platinum, we’ll see where in the YTD it places next week.

The rest of the top 5 line up like this: Peter Andre drops back 2-3 (58,000), Mariah Carey similarly drops one place 3-4 (53,000) and Celine Dion holds at No 5 (46,000).

upysup1439121928.jpg

The rest of the charts are awash with Euro 96 inspired hits including BBC Orchestra (No 45) Collapsed Lung (No 37), Rod Stewart/ Scottish Euro 96 squad (No 36) and the official theme from Simply Red (No 12). We can now add Black Grape’s “England’s Irie” which features Joe Strummer and Keith Allen and is new at No 6 (38,000). It’s featured on the same album that “3 Lions” appears namely “Beautiful Game” which has surprisingly only made No 10 on the compilation chart. It gives the group a 4th top 10 hit, double the sum achieved as part of Happy Mondays.

Everything_but_the_Girl.jpg

Everything But The Girl score a third top 10 single on the trot with “Wrong” arriving at No 8 (33,000). They’ve returned to the man who masterminded their overhaul Todd Terry for the remix of this single which comes up trumps, the album responds 18-12 and is already their biggest seller album ever in just 7 weeks.

Queen continue to rack up the hits post Mercury’s death, “Let Me Live” is a fourth single to be taken from “Made In Heaven” and was originally recorded with Rod Stewart way back in 1983. It was re-recorded as part of the recent project and is now new at No 9 (30,000) to register their 24th top 10 single placing them 8th on the all time list.

Livin’ Joy continue their step by step descent down the charts 6-7 (34,000) and Ocean Colour Scene dip 9-10 (25,000) but “Moseley Shoals” advances 6-2 to equal its best ever showing.

4- ALWAYS BE MY BABY- Mariah Carey (53,000)

5- BECAUSE YOU LOVED ME- Celine Dion (46,000)

Can’t see Three Lions returning to #1 next week. Only Mr Blobby has managed it since 1969!

'Always Be My Baby' is one of my favourite Mariah songs ^_^

I wonder if that man who won the competition to go to Madrid with Shampoo was watching the TOTP re-runs tonight

Always Be My Baby is one of my favourite Mariah Carey singles, I really liked it at the time. That and Fantasy are her best two for me.

Very impressive and consistent sales for Killing Me Softly, really destroyed some strong competition over these weeks :o

(edit - Jade's comment wasn't there when I posted but lol at us both saying very similar things about Mariah!)

(edit - Jade's comment wasn't there when I posted but lol at us both saying very similar things about Mariah!)

 would say that 'Fantasy' is my overall favourite of hers, so - taste!

wow incredible sales x Fugees

not my fav from Mariah I have t say, I much prefer early Mariah, was a big fan of her debut and also liked Music Box but she did lose me as a fan after that

Wrong is my fav of the newbies, EBTG at their very best

Yes I will post the missing weeks over the next few days.

It’s a shame as the next 2 have some crackers.

I only really liked Everything But The Girl’s Wrong from the last two.

I thought that about the winner too. What a crap prize with Shampoo considering the great bands at the time

6TH JULY

1_LNR_HDE_210618Three.jpg

England may have been dumped out of Euro 96 in midweek but by that time Skinner/ Baddiel/ Lightning Seeds “Three Lions” had built up such a massive lead that a return to No 1 was inevitable. The track sold 138,000 copies last week to become only the second track in 27 years to return to No 1 in the same run after it had been deposed (Mr Blobby in 1993 was the other single), whether it can hold on for another week is extremely doubtful. The gap of four weeks between chart topping appearances is however the longest since The Beatles “She Loves You” took 6 weeks to reclimb to No 1 in 1963.

That’s because The Fugees had the biggest selling single based on sales Thursday- Saturday and so are likely to become the third single to return to the top next week. “Killing Me Softly” sold another 132,000 to almost overtake at the death but it wasn’t to be. Note must be made of Peter Andre who sticks at No 3 (53,000) but has now spent 6 weeks in the top 3 without ever making No 1. The top three are fast racking up sales but are they all in the YTD top 10 now that the half way point is here?- let’s find out:

1- SPACEMAN- Babylon Zoo 1,098,000

2- KILLING ME SOFTLY- The Fugees 817,000

3- RETURN OF THE MACK- Mark Morrison 758,000

4- DON’T LOOK BACK IN ANGER- Oasis 702,000

5- OOH AAH JUST A LITTLE BIT- Gina G 688,000

6- HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE- Take That 669,000

7- THREE LIONS- Baddiel/ Skinner/ Lightning Seeds 530,000

8- FIRESTARTER- The Prodigy 503,000

9- ANYTHING- 3T 477,000

10- FASTLOVE- George Michael 447,000

Peter Andre currently ranks 13th but it’s worth noting that 6 of those tracks are still on the chart so it can all change.

kula-shaker.jpg

Joint winners of the “In The City” competition with Placebo last year Kula Shaker started a bidding war between labels which was won by Columbia records. First proper release “Grateful When You’re Dead” made No 35 earlier this year but “Tattva” makes their real debut here entering the charts at No 4 (47,000), it is partly written and sang in Sanskrit and reflects the group’s Indian influence in their music. Lead singer Crispian Mills is the son of actress Hayley Mills and therefore grandson of actor Sir John Mills by way of trivia.

ash.jpg

It’s been a great year for Ash, their last single “Goldfinger” became their biggest yet making No 5 back in April and was followed by their debut album “1977” which debuted at the No 1 spot. It generates another top 10 single now in “Oh Yeah” which is new at No 6 (39,000) in part thanks to a UK tour which has just come to an end.

Nzk1LmpwZWc.jpeg

The ubiquitous “I Like To Move It” was a massive hit back in 1994 when it spent 15 weeks in the top 20 without ever getting higher than No 5, since that point and 4 releases later, it seemed the law of diminishing returns had kicked in with the outfits last single missing the top 20 entirely. A slight change in direction and some club support has rectified that though, “Jazz it Up” is new at No 7 (36,000) and is the first time that the Mad Stuntman is not on the track.

MV5BZTExMDUzZGUtMjkyYi00MDBjLTk2NDktZjI4OWI1YzA3NTVmXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTUyODMyMw@@._V1_.jpg

A regular on the chart scoring 9 hit singles over the last 5 years, Alison Limerick has only scored one top 20 hit, 1992’s “Make It On My Own” but her name has been a big draw on the dance scene. Her 1991 single “Where Love Lives” only made No 27 but has become a club classic over the years and now the pressure clearly has become too much to resist and it gets the remix treatment from Dancin Divaz and enters the chart at No 9 (26,000) to become her biggest hit.

Celine Dion holds again at No 5 (42,000) though she appears to have peaked sales wise with the film now showing in cinema’s it seems to have run its course, and Livin’ Joy continue an agonisingly slow descent 7-8 (30,000) whilst Mariah Carey slides 4-10 (26,000).

1- THREE LIONS- Skinner/ Baddiel/ Lightning Seeds (138,000)

2- KILLING ME SOFTLY- The Fugees (132,000)

3- MYSTERIOUS GIRL- Peter Andre Ft Bubbler Ranx (53,000)

4- TATTVA- Kula Shaker (47,000)

5- BECAUSE YOU LOVED ME- Celine Dion (42,000)

6- OH YEAH- Ash (39,000)

7- JAZZ IT UP- Reel 2 Real (36,000)

8- DON’T STOP MOVIN- Livin Joy (30,000)

9- WHERE LOVE LIVES- Alison Limerick (26,000)

10- ALWAYS BE MY BABY- Mariah Carey (26,000)

Tattva and Oh Yeah are both amazing plus good to see Alison Limerick with a well deserved top 10.

That top 3 really did have impressive runs, it must be pretty rare that the same three songs dominate for over a month.

I haven't heard Tattva in ages - I did buy it at the time but it was never as big a fave of mine as many of the other britpop tracks were. Alison Limerick was such a great dance track, glad it got a second chance and made the top 10... the Ash track was okay but they had much better songs on the album.

Tattva (and Kula Shaker) were always a bit marmite. I quite liked them, but several of my friends didn’t.
I liked some of their tracks, my favourites were Grateful When You're Dead and Hey Dude

I can honestly say I've never liked Kula Shaker. The lead singer was seemed a shade obnoxious not to mention "nazi-gate"
