May 20, 20241 yr What’s the objectively biggest band not to have a top 40 hit in the UK do we think? Well according to the Wikipedia article for the best selling musicians of all time the answer is B'z. I'm sure we're all gutted to not be able to vote for them x
May 21, 20241 yr Hey Gezza, could you post the link of the full 2020 results please? :P EDIT: Interesting how groups have lost relevance in the UK charts these days. There is only 1 group in the midweeks top 20: OneRepublic at #19. -_- Edited May 21, 20241 yr by Jason
May 21, 20241 yr Let’s all download a track before Friday! Would probably be enough to get it into the sales only chart these days tbf. Edited May 21, 20241 yr by My... WAP??
May 21, 20241 yr And does Florence and the Machine count for this rate as well as solo female? Guess Divine Comedy do.

May 21, 20241 yr Author Looking forwards to this thanks for sorting it Gezza you do amazing rates. Very kind- thank you
May 21, 20241 yr Author And does Florence and the Machine count for this rate as well as solo female? Guess Divine Comedy do. It all depends on composition of the act- Florence Welch had a solo credit on "Sweet Nothing" so was always eligible for the solo thread for example. So it is possible to be eligible for both lists. All I would ask people to do is to consider how much they like the catalogue of an act whilst they were a group and not a solo act- Simply Red are another example- until the late 90s they were a group then a solo project thereafter. And of course did they have a top 40 hit whilst a group!
May 21, 20241 yr Thanks - I think Florence Welch slightly underperformed in the female rate due to being seen as leading a group (although no way of knowing but think someone said as much) so think they deserve group votes. On wiki they are listed as one.
May 21, 20241 yr What’s the objectively biggest band not to have a top 40 hit in the UK do we think? Wolf Alice don't appear to have ever even had a Top 100 single :o Yet aren't far off being festival headliners
May 22, 20241 yr What’s the objectively biggest band not to have a top 40 hit in the UK do we think? Interesting question. Big where and when is key to the question. Thinking of big in the UK here. The Grateful Dead and King Crimson spring to mind as bands that have shifted millions of units in the past with no UK hit singles. More recently Sleep Token sold out Wembley Arena in 10 minutes but are unlikely to ever trouble the top 40, and Architects have number 1 albums and are festival headliners but Rock and Metal bands simply don't have hits despite having hugely successful careers.
May 22, 20241 yr I actually think Sleep Token have enough social media hype behind them now to at least make the Top 100 with the lead single from their next album and potentially Top 40. We’ll see though.
May 26, 20241 yr Getting close to finalising my list. Although, it doesn’t matter for this, as I’m sure I would have been the only one voting for them anyway, but compiling this, I’ve discovered that, for some reason, the OCC decided not to credit UGK on ‘Big Pimpin’. 24 years later and I’m appalled!!!
May 26, 20241 yr Wolf Alice don't appear to have ever even had a Top 100 single :o Yet aren't far off being festival headliners They have had 3 low top 100 singles ('Don't Delete The Kisses' scraped a week at #100, then 'Smile' and 'How Can I Make It OK?' got #88 and #93 on the week of their last album's release). We can only hope they'll eventually get a top 40 hit.
May 26, 20241 yr Sent my votes... as I took part in this rate the last time and there were so many groups I just didn't have room for, plus reasons mentioned elsewhere regarding at least one of the groups I voted for then, I've decided to add an extra criteria for my own nominations - all 30 of them have also had at least one song in my personal chart top 40 since I started posting them at the start of 2023. In nearly all cases, those particular songs weren't official Top 40s but they had others which were. It's made for an interesting list of groups who are still in some way current, and most of whom I expect will get other nominations anyway. Sadly it means my favourite group R.E.M. don't have my vote this time, however as luck would have it a certain group are still eligible!
