Gareth Southgate has resigned after a second consecutive European Championship final defeat.

The Three Lions lost 2-1 to Spain in Berlin on Sunday, having been beaten on penalties by Italy at Wembley three years ago.

The 53-year-old managed his country for 102 games in eight years in charge.

"As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England," said Southgate.

"It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.

"But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter."

  • First squad and Tuchel selects Henderson, FML 🤣

Surprised at this, honestly thought he'd stay for the World Cup.

Whoever comes in next has a tough job living up to now much raised expectations and good luck to them. Just please don't take Eddie Howe we need him at Newcastle.

We've had some great memories under him but I'm glad he's not overstaying his welcome.

Atomic Kitten must be gutted.

Atomic Kitten must be gutted.

Southgate's not the one.

Great effort bringing through younger players, and I think there's much to be hopeful about, but the time for change was needed.

Further to this, I think England need to appoint a new captain to lead them as Harry's days are numbered.

The big question is of course who is going to do a better job because the options are not vast out there at this current time but definitely the right decision and same for Kane it’s time to move on from him but is Toney or Watkins really a first choice England striker? I’m not sure about that one so who else is around? Hopefully someone emerges.
Watkins definitely has the credentials to be first choice striker, he's putting up better numbers than most of the other countries' #1 strikers but I also wouldn't be to hasty yet to usher Kane out of the door. He's got one maybe two more tournaments in him even if not as a guaranteed starter every match.

The right decision.

He's obviously done a great amount of work and the change of mentality & culture has been well welcomed. Personally, I feel in hindsight he should have gone after the World Cup. He's been the manager for a long time, but you sensed in this campaign something wasn't right - Southgate was way more prickly with the media (which is usually a strong point) and some really bizarre decisions imo throughout the tournament.

I'd say Graham Potter is highly likely to be next, or maybe Lee Carsley. Suspect the FA will want someone with the St. George's mentality. Also wouldn't surprise me if they tried to go for Klopp for a 2 year contract to 2026 - I think he'd be the only foreign manager we might go for.

I really don’t like the idea of Lee Carsley, it’s just Southgate all over again. Somebody with real proven pedigree not someone not good enough for a real top job so they get into youth international management

Here are current odds

Graham Potter - 6/4

Lee Carsley - 9/4

Eddie Howe - 11/4

Jurgen Klopp - 8/1

Frank Lampard - 14/1

Mauricio Pochettino - 14/1

Thomas Tuchel - 22/1

I’d prefer someone English but would take Klopp for sure

Graham Potter would be a disaster, hell no.

I think he's the best of an uninspiring bunch, but not sure he'd take the job. Seems to be some murmors of Tuchel.. which seems odd, but could see it working for a short stint period whilst they sound Carsley for the job (who is definitely not ready).

Points to a wider point about our players are much better technically these days, but our coaching/coaches still leaves a lot to be desired.

The best nearly man England will ever have. It's probably for best for the long term future that a change of manager happens.

I am quite surprised in all honesty, I thought he'd at least do one more tournament, two consecutive Euros finals is certainly a much higher ending point than any past England manager has, but there certainly has been some issues arising that show we're not quite up to the big teams yet so I do commend him for knowing when to stop if he doesn't feel he can fix this. Certainly one that history will be very kind to with that track record.

I await the same cycle to start again when England go out at the QFs next tournament or something :kink:

I saw this coming actually, I think its best in the long run, the sooner we get somebody while its still fresh that manager can analyse all the recent games, and find all the potholes to find out what went wrong to improve it  we need someone soon as England for the qualifying process to the World Cup games will resume soon.

Also Gary Linekar hinted Frank Lampard should take it I read it somewhere on Facebook, please please do not go there.

Most likely it be someone from the PL, my suggestion would be Eddie Howe, I rather have a British manager, I really can't think of anyone else to be honest, if they do go international Aston Villa manager Unai Emery would be my choice, but would he take it.

I can't see why Howe would take the England job, he's virtually unsackable at Newcastle. He could be booted out the England job after the World Cup or even before if it goes wrong.
Sorry to see him go, I always felt that with him we could pull out with a good result when we needed to and I've enjoyed seeing us get so much deeper in tournaments than we're used to. Whoever the replacement is will need to be on a par with the man management, the team have felt very much a positive presence in recent years, particularly compared to how it used to be.
Sad news, I thought he would wait for longer before deciding. :(

Lee Carsley has been appointed interim England manager for September's Nations League games as the Football Association continues to search for Gareth Southgate's permanent successor.

The 50-year-old has stepped up from his role as England Under-21 boss to replace Southgate, who resigned two days after defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final last month.

"As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process to recruit a new manager," said Carsley.

"My main priority is to ensure continuity and our goal is to secure promotion in the Uefa Nations League.”
