  • I’m not sure giving the public more information right there and then would have changed anything. The morons still would have rioted no matter what information was at their disposal.

I fundamentally don't understand the point Liam is trying to make. Why should the general public know detailed facts from ANY ongoing criminal investigation in real-time unless it is a warning of a d

These people are too hate filled for anything. I won’t forget the politicians who have played their part in stoking this fire over the years, along with the media, but racism and violence is a choice these people have made.

The reporting has been disgusting. I’m absolutely fed up of the ‘oh but we have to be neutral in reporting’ bollocks-I have not seen the words racist or racism used anywhere and that’s what this is. There is no excuse for racism, not one.

They should do.

However, I remember the fuss that Naga Munchetty found herself in purely for calling Donald Trump racist. It's a shame that merely calling a spade a spade could put someone in danger but that seems to be where we are at.

I don't remember the 2011 riots very much - I was only 14 at the time, but this seems to be worse than that. Let's face it, these current riots are only about creating division and hurting people.

Frankly I don't believe any right-winger who says they care about the safety of children or whatever, and then goes ahead and does this.

I remember feeling awful and very upset about the state of things during the 2011 riots but I do think this feels worse. At that time, there wasn’t such a focus on racism which is undeniable of these riots. But as I said, there have been many more years of politicians and media stoking up the fires leading up to these riots. Britain has not been looked after and that’s not because of non white people.

The Tories were obsessed with culture wars for many years.

I guess this is the impact.

The 2011 riots were way worse, there was a lot more damage and widespread fear, although those riots kind of burned out quickly. The difference was, those were actually riots, whereas the current trend appears to be protests, but with the aim of being riots, so less intense but of course social media plays a way bigger part these days. I think this current trend will eventually fizzle out over the week, but clearly there's some real work politicians need to do.

I do not remember the 2011 riots either. I was quite self absorbed then at all, not caring about anything except what I was doing. I didn't even watch the news then come to think of it. I feel downright horrified and sick at what is happening now.

I can't even fathom how someone can actually think they are in the right to behave like half of these people. The worst thing for me honestly is using the deaths of three little girls to perpetrate these acts in the name of 'taking our country back'. 1, anyone can be a POS and do what this person did, 2, the absolute disgustingness in the initial lies and racism peddled leading to the first set of riots. Social media is a cesspit. Musk should be ashamed honestly. 3, the continued riots that are meant to be because of the death of these little girls. How does looting and hurting people help take our country back? Nigel Farage has a lot to answer for as well.

Also Hassan the fact that you feel unsafe enough to go anywhere like a city where there may be riots and abuse is appalling. It's horrible that you feel like this and I'm so sorry you do.

To be honest, I think it stopped being about what happened in Southport a few days ago.

I think the people live streaming it and getting involved in setting a hotel on fire (which seems to have been what's happened today) don't care about the repercussions. Ditto Farage, Musk etc.

In Birmingham we seem to have largely avoided any riots, thankfully. Surprising in a way because of how multi-cultural/diverse we are, but it seems the North attracts those people a lot more.

I legit just read about the setting of that fire at that hotel and that is disgusting. There are over 90 people in there including the staff as well. How anyone can think that is fine. Imagine if that had gotten out of hand and everyone was killed. I honestly cannot fathom it at all and yes I agree the riots stopped being about those girls a few days ago, I had assumed maybe naively that this was perhaps the reason still being perpetrated. I actually haven't really heard of anything happening in Scotland either and I hope it stays that way.

All of these far-right rioters and hooligans are a disgrace to this country. I would rather choose multiculturalism over white supremacy over any day of the week.

I don't think the comparison with 2011 is all that accurate. 2011 started out as an angry lashing out at the killing of an individual. Rightly or wrongly, much of that anger was genuine outrage, even if opportunists quickly used it as an chance to loot and vandalise. What we're seeing now isn't the same, it's extreme right wing groups using the murder of three children as cover for a targeted series of attacks on non white groups - particularly muslims.

Personally, the 2011 riots were definitely larger, more widespread and more extreme. This has bigger parallels with the campaigns seen by the National Front, Combat 18 and others back in the 80s and 90s, except this time the use of social media is enabling it to be better organised and more prolonged.

Obviously these... people are a stain on this country and we can only hope they are shamed enough to go back in to hiding soon (preferably in jail, but we'll never erase racism).

And it goes without saying that I hope everyone stays safe out there.

The 2011 riots were directly responsible for 5 deaths. So far at least there hasn't been any in these ones so they're completely different levels.

Were people deliberately attacked in 2011 or is that incidental deaths by crush etc.?

Maybe it's that we're more connected now but I definitely see more lynch mob esque targeted attack footage this time around.

Totally agree as well media need to call it for what it is and have zero tolerance. Turning a blind eye is what got us here in the first place.

I don’t think bringing in the mathematics of riots from 2011 is particularly helpful, it already feels like an attempt to minimise what we’re going through right now. Perhaps no one has died yet but following today there’ll at least be attempted murder charges falling upon rioters.

Every video I've seen of the riots is a small collection of far right thugs clashing with police and a lot more anti-racists condemning it. Even the media (who shouldn't escape notice for their role in normalising this) have been pretty condemning.

Which is hopeful IMO, it brings these idiots into the light.

I don't know how to feel anymore.

I can only hope that things die down during the week and the police do their thing, but I'm beginning to wonder if these riots have been planned, because it's quite clear at this point that it's nothing to do with what happened in Southport.

Those poor girls have been completely forgotten.

It's never been about the poor girls murdered, it was pure opportunis. Yaxley-Lennon has been stirring up trouble for a few weeks and the stabbings just provided an opportunist moment. In a way, it's probably a good thing the likes of Lush and Greggs are being attacked, as those that feel some sympathy or understanding, completely turn to the other side. While it's making noise, it's still small numbers of people in the grand scheme of things.

Yaxley-Lennon has lost the plot in Twitter tonight and even the Daily Mail has told Twitter where he's staying. The irony of someone wanting British justice living off an irish passport from Cyprus is not lost. He'll be arrested the moment he steps foot on British soil.

I had a moment earlier where I did feel fearful, like what could happen if I went outside etc. I've never had this feeling before because they've tended to be isolated incidents that are one day here and there, not five days in a row.

There's already been, what, a few hundred people arrested? It's clearly not been enough of a deterrent though.
