And that's entirely because of the UK's 'unique' chart rules - Espresso toing and froing with ACR was why it kept swapping with PPP.

I guess I am comparing to the Irish chart, which is compiled by the OCC so all the same rules. PPP dominated once released.

Kisses has been in the top 10 for much of the summer so I'd say that's the best shout!
The reason why the charts are so stagnat is because this month we've really had no quote on quote "big" release that could shake something up, September has arguably been the most dry release month of the year so far, we have Gaga that could possibly do something but let's see what new music October brings.

I think as someone previously said in this thread, the trend seems to be to slow down new releases as soon as Q4 arrives... which would be October effectively. I can see why that might happen in this streaming age because you don't want to put out your best material so it can be swamped by the Christmas markets by November and more or less forgotten by January. So the sensible thing to do would be to hold on to what you have and release in Q1 2025. The problem that causes as you rightly said is stagnation. I can't see an awful lot will change for the rest of 2024 I'm afraid.

I’d probably say a no to this, I can think of a more boring year/s.

I put down the slow moving nature to streaming which nearly everyone has mentioned.

In decades past once you bought a song that was it in terms of sales and charts, no matter how many times you played it at home, in the car or out and about it still counted as the one solitary sale. Now with streaming you can play it till your hearts content and it’ll help its chart life.

This year has missed a summer dance anthem imo

Isn't Espresso basically a summer dance anthem ^_^

For me it is the best year in along time probably because music I like are charting.

I'm an American getting into the UK Charts this year for the first time and I've been having a lot of fun. The US charts are way more stuck than the UK Charts, and you just get a wider variety. Plus, I feel like we over-emphasize the top 10 in the US and it means songs that are doing well get overlooked. I've learned so much more I like by just listening to radio 1 every Friday than I have with the US charts.

And on a sorta related note, y'alls program is so much better than anything we have. We get a countdown of the top 40 radio songs, with loads of commercials, and boring conversation sometimes not even related to music before Ryan Seacrest introduces a song that isn't even in the countdown but it might be someday. Y'all are doing it right

or perhaps Backbone having been a number one hit

but I do agree with the sentiment that we’ve missed a huge dance summer hit, in recent years we had Miracle and Afraid to Feel spending ages at number one but nothing of the sort this year sadly

Gwon enlighten me how it isn't

Because its genre is clearly pop and not dance. There isn’t a thread in the Dance forum dedicated to “Espresso” or any other Sabrina Carpenter song for that matter, but there is in the Pop And Country forum. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible to dance to; just that it doesn’t fit the category of dance song to which those who mentioned it were referring.

Gwon enlighten me how it isn't

Because it's an out-and-out pop song and not a dance track in any way shape or form?

I don't know how much more enlightenment you need, I kind of thought you might be joking

Dance has struggled all round this year it seems.

The charts have become more international than ever this year I think, the US and Australian charts are looking more and more like our own as each week passes - but the likes of Spain, Germany, Finland, Sweden etc have at least remained largely immune so this increased globalisation must be somewhat limited to English speaking countries. Dance has always been more popular in the UK than elsewhere, and we seem to be getting fewer UK only hits these days, which must have impacted dance music. There have been a lot of great tracks that I feel might have broken through a few years ago that just aren't now, for whatever reason (weaker playlisting, less airplay, less dance going viral on TikTok...)

Somedays and Kisses have done very well to do as well as they have.

Because it's an out-and-out pop song and not a dance track in any way shape or form?

Fair enough it's credited as disco, pop, synthetic pop And funk sow I'll have to agree to disagree

I would say it has been one of the better years since streaming was incorporated, in particular the first six months.

The top 20 has definitely suffered this summer, but not much the charts can do when we are dealing with a number of huge hits which aren't waning in popularity.

I am more interested in the lower end of the chart these days as a lot more new entries and usually where a lot of the viral hits start off. In the last four weeks alone, I have counted 30 new entries (8 of these top 40 on week one), so definitely not stale as you move away from the top end.
