Yazoo here to save us!

Come on Eileen is okay but I'd never choose to play it. Driving in my Car is absolutely awful, what were Madness thinking with that one?

The Eighties have definitely begun now - very little “Eighventies” left.

'Don't Go' is a brill upbeat track and yes, kind of starts the big drum beat and synth part of the Eighties sound.

'Come On Eileen' is too iconic and joyous for me to dislike.

'It Started With A Kiss' by Hot Chocolate is very good - a more synth based song than most soul/post-disco at this time which I appreciate and it has really nice production and vocal - I really like the chorus.

31ST JULY

It's another "Fame" double this week as it continues to dominate the field with a further 13% sales increase to 189,000 copies, that's the highest weekly total of 1982, similarly the original Soundtrack holds at No 1 on the album charts which is joined at No 2 by "Kids From Fame" this week, Britain just can't get enough it appears. Irene Cara has now sold 521,000 copies and still increasing Cara could be looking at the first million seller of the decade! It's already the 4th biggest single of the year.

Registering a 113% sales increase are Dexy's Midnight Runners who rise 9-2, the 91,000 copies it sold to make the runner up spot is the highest total since "Mickey" scored 96,000 copies back in March, Cara may be too far ahead for "Come On Eileen" to worry about Dexy's but the group can already celebrate their second biggest hit of their career, album "Too Rye Ay" is released this week and may ultimately harm the single's chances of going any further.

The sole new song in the top 10 comes courtesy of Japan, their cover of the Smokey Robinson & The Miracles "I Second That Emotion" crawls 14-9 (36,000) this week to become their second top 10 single and must be a mighty relief to the band whose last single "Cantonese Boy" couldn't progress beyond No 24. The previously highest placed version of the track came from Diana Ross & The Supremes and The Temptations who could only make No 18 back in 1969.

Though there aren't any more new tracks to discuss the top 10 is far from static, Madness can be perhaps a little disappointed with "Driving In My Car" which shot into the charts at No 6 last week and this week can only advance to No 4 (65,000). Both Yazoo and Hot Chocolate also improve 5-3 (66,000) and 8-7 (42,000) respectively. Four tracks are on their way out, Trio's minimalistic take on pop drops 2-5 (50,000) as it fades as fast as it arrives, Bananarama hit the skids 4-6 (46,000), Steve Miller Band can't turn the trick 3-8 (37,000) and Shalamar forget to climb 7-10 (34,000).

Whether it's just overplayed at every wedding, Christmas Disco and all that kinda thing... But I hate Come on Eileen.
Great sales for Irene Cara, wasn't expecting it to grow again at retail this time. It's a shame that Yazoo found themselves up against a couple of the year's defining songs but it seems as though they were a very long way behind sales wise.

Its a better top 10 now I think on this thread than for the previous few chart weeks.

Some 60s nostalgia from the band Japan there. David Sylvian does have an interesting voice that is probably a bit Marmite for some, but I like it.

oh Yazoo <3 Don't Go is such a classic

surprised at the Come on Eileen hate, I do like it myself, maybe not love it, but it's decent compared to recent hits

glad Fame is doing so well, I remember being obsessed with the TV show as a little kid, don't think I knew it was a movie before

Always wondered what Depeche Mode would have sounded like if Vince had not left the band. Guess we may not have had Erasure then though!!

Great sales for FAME though!

The Eighties have definitely begun now - very little “Eighventies” left.

Agreed  I was looking at the top 10 and thinking Odyssey/Hot Chocolate etc starting to fade as the weeks go buy, music starting to sound more modern as a result. Yazoo the obvious example!

And conversely, 'Come On Eileen' is an utter abomination :puke2:

As the Snake said its too joyous and iconic to hate, I mean I know everyone in the country has danced to it ridiculously at a thousand weddings but overplay just shows how big its been culturally in the past 40 odd years.

I would leave Hot Chocolate out of that discussion about 'Eighventies' music - I think 'Started With A Kiss' is a good synth ballad with Vangelis style synths and also they anticipated Imagination britfunk with 'No Doubt About It'!

Odyssey and Shalamar do I think sound more late 70s than early 80s though!

also nice to see Bananarama doing so well, thats 80s to me

Shy Guy is not their bestest so I guess they were pretty popular if this could go top 5, many better songs from them to follow

The collabs with Funboy 3 probably helped develop the fanbase!

What was the previous big brit girl group before Bananarama?
