Posted September 26, 2024Sep 26 Hello, Trialling a new concept for some engaging future threads where we ask BuzzJack members to raid their CD collection to find an album that they personally purchased in the year of the subject, so in this case, 2005. We want you to share your album highlights from this year, anything you remember from the time, why the album is well regarded by you and where it ranks in your personal music collection today. Hopefully the moderators, including myself, can come up with some interesting albums to mention here. ^_^
September 27, 2024Sep 27 Interested to see what others share. Will have to recall which ones I have from that year first which is not many lol.
September 27, 2024Sep 27 I don’t think I can offer anything too obscure for this year but my favourite album was Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson (technically a 2004 release but it was released in summer ‘05 in the uk iirc). Highly recommend to anyone who hasn’t yet heard it. Standout tracks besides the singles: Gone, You Found Me, Beautiful Disaster
September 28, 2024Sep 28 1. 4ever 2. Everything I'm Not 3. When It All Falls Apart 4. Revolution 5. Secret 6. Mouth Shut 7. Leave Me Alone 8. Speechless 9. Heavily Broken 10. I Could Get Used to This 11. Nobody Wins 12. Mother Mother I would say Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson, Eye To The Telescope by KT Tunstall and The Sound of White by Missy Higgins are all up there when I think of 2005 but they are all actually 2004 albums I just spammed in 2005. 2004 was easily my favourite 00s year for albums, but I'll cover that in another thread. But The Secret Life Of... by The Veronicas is one of my all-time top 10 favourites and was released in 2005. I must play this in full several times a year. Clearly it took a cue from Breakaway, which is in my all-time top five (clearly I loved this sound) but it was more spiky and more teen-oriented I guess. It was my first year of uni album that takes me right back to some very good days. 4Ever is such a wonderful pop-rock singalong, a Max Martin and Dr Luke song (in happier times...) and of course was eventually released as a single here in 2009 after the success of Untouched, and went top 20 despite sounding like a dated copy of P!nk's U + Ur Hand, when in fact it was the P!nk song that was clearly 'inspired' by this originally - same Max Martin and Dr Luke team on that though so they were hardly about to sue themselves. Everything I'm Not was another great anthemic single in the same vein and then the brilliant When It All Falls Apart is a little slower but is one of my go to tracks when I'm having a bad day. Revolution is just a great singalong, Secret has creepy/stalkerish lyrics I always thought were very clever, and Speechless (the token ballad, a bit like In Another Life on the Hook Me Up album) is my other big favourite - a very strong ballad sung tenderly by Jess and Lisa, which I related to a lot at the time in more innocent days ha. All of the other songs are at least 8/10s for me too - Leave Me Alone is like a strong t.A.T.u. song (and of course The Veronicas wrote All About Us for t.A.T.u. that same year), Nobody Wins has vibes of Avril's I'm With You, Heavily Broken is stronger rock, like Evanescence (this album wears its influences on its sleeve very clearly), and Mother Mother is almost punky with some almost screamo vocals at time showing the rage and passion in the song. I couldn't recommend this album any more highly. And for fans of this sound, there's a little gem on their new album Gothic Summer called Invisible, which sounds like it could have come from this era.
September 28, 2024Sep 28 Great choice gooddelta! I loved this album back in 2005 but haven’t really revisited it since then if I’m being honest. 2005 was my second last year of high school, so it brings back many memories for me too.
October 3, 2024Oct 3 I was having a look back through my library and these are all genuine favourites of mine that were released in 2005: Sufjan Stevens - Illinois sometimes I think this is the best album ever made Antony & the Johnsons - I am a Bird Now Patrick Wolf - Wind in the Wires Aimee Mann - The Forgotten Arm Ladytron - Witching Hour Robyn - Robyn Bloc Party - Silent Alarm Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning / Digital Ash in a Digital Urn Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine Madonna - Confessions on a Dancefloor Susumu Yokota - Symbol Malcolm Middleton - Into the Woods All of the above are wonderful, and to be honest there were many more as well
October 3, 2024Oct 3 Absolutely adore this album  a no skips for me! It's been ages since I gave it a proper full listen through, I'm gonna do it! Shame we didn't get a proper era of it in the UK, it had soooo much potential.
October 4, 2024Oct 4 Absolutely adore this album  a no skips for me! It's been ages since I gave it a proper full listen through, I'm gonna do it! Shame we didn't get a proper era of it in the UK, it had soooo much potential. I remember this time very well. All of the singles were all over Australian radio and tv. They seemed massive.
October 6, 2024Oct 6 2005 was definitely the year for dance/electronic legacy acts to release their Greatest Hits. We had Basement Jaxx, The Prodigy and Faithless put our their compilations that year. Basement Jaxx's is my favourite of the lot, such a stunnning collection of singles and a no skips CD but I'd imagine you'd want studio albums here. My absolute fave album from the year has to be Goldfrapp - Supernature. Discovering this was a result of me really getting into dance music in 2005 and digging as far as I could into electronic music (as far as you could with a 2005 dial-up internet connection lol). The album has a fantastic run of singles and really strong album tracks (Satin Chic should've been a proper single and not some random remix). I hadn't really appreciated the duo until that point and I'm thankful for that album opening up my ears to some broader sounds beyond the rather samey pop music of the time. Some other highlights: Black Eyed Peas - Monkey Business The Chemical Brothers - Push The Button Kaiser Chiefs - Employment Kanye West - Late Registration Gorillaz - Demon Days Pendulum - Hold Your Colour (my first proper exposure to drum and bass, I can still see the Slam video now as it's so hard to forget ) Edited October 6, 2024Oct 6 by lewistgreen
October 6, 2024Oct 6 YVA - Berniukams First and most successful YVA album in Lithuania. Nice piece of catchy pop music. As big fan of group I like this LP, but other three albums were much better. "Vasaros Mergaites" is my favourite track. XjD1H_Q62nk Edited October 7, 2024Oct 7 by Last Dreamer
October 7, 2024Oct 7 A couple I'd recommend to people: The Magic Numbers - The Magic Numbers Stunning indie-pop. They really had a moment with this album and the singles from it Natalie Imbruglia - Counting Down The Days I love a mellow pop album and this was pure perfection. Had a couple of killer singles as well in 'Shiver' and 'Counting Down The Days'
October 7, 2024Oct 7 Some of my fav albums of 05 have been mentioned like Sufjan-Illinoise a modern classic with so many jewels, guess everybody knows Chicago, but Casimir Pulanski Day and especially John Wayne Gacy Jr are next level masterpieces in songwriting then there's Antony & The Johnsons-I'm a bird now this is an album I just adore. Pure emotion. I still remember back in the day my best friend saying oh we cannot listen to this album, it's gonna destroy us with songs like Hope There's Someone, about when you feel you'll always end up alone and never will find someone or Bird Gerl or You are my Sister. one album that hasn't been mentioned is KT Tunstall-Eye to the Telescope. Her debut and best album, housing all her best songs like the classics Black Horse and the Cherry Tree, Suddenly I see and Other Side of the World bu a great album overall besides the 3 huge singles also special mention to another singer-songwriter, David Gray and his album Life in Slow Motion. He might have peaked with White Ladder, but Life in Slow Motion is his 2nd best album with great songs including uptempos like The one I love and Hospital Food and great slowies like Alibi, Ain't no love and Slow Motion. His last good album sadly.
October 7, 2024Oct 7 Oh I absolutely loved Life in Slow Motion, it’s actually my favourite of his. Lately and Alibi are particular favourites - I’d forgotten all about it but think I’ll listen on the way home now
October 7, 2024Oct 7 My knowledge of albums pre-2010 is pretty much exclusively Hip-Hop but luckily 2005 was a pretty good year for the genre. My top 5 are all 5/5s and are (in alphabetical order): Common - Be The Game - The Documentary Lil Wayne - Tha Carter II Little Brother - The Minstrel Show Young Jeezy - Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 We also had 'Late Registration' which is definitely worth a mention but I left it off as it's already been mentioned and it isn't even in my top 5 Kanye albums.
October 7, 2024Oct 7 Author 2005 was when I first got introduced to Athlete, and after falling in love with their studio album Tourist I quickly purchased their 2003 album Vehicles & Animals. The 2005 album by Athlete was quite a different type of album for me to purchase compared with some of the heavier rock albums I owned at the time, but this album contains lots of beautiful melodies that deserve to be listened to; 1. Chances 2. Half Light 3. Tourist 4. Trading Air 5. Wires 6. If I Found Out 7. Yesterday Threw Everything at Me 8. Street Map 9. Modern Mafia 10. Twenty Four Hours 11. I Love Most will know their main hit Wires; 5ivKzieP9ZU They also released Half Light as a single; 24-YSvcI-V0 Tourist also; JKZb4KQzjLY And Twenty Four Hours; t_BxQHID5Dw
October 8, 2024Oct 8 I like a lot (but don't love) the Athlete album. Wires is an 11/10 song and there's a couple 10/10 tracks like Yesterday Threw Everything at Me and 24 Hours but I find the rest of the album kinda not on the same level
October 8, 2024Oct 8 Yeh 'Wires' was huge at the time but seems to not get as much plays these days for some reason!
