They’d hang out all day, bonding, making music, seeing friends, whatever. People always coming and going, never a dull moment. Sometimes, Juice would wake LAROI up in the middle of the night, wild with excitement about a track LAROI had to put a verse on. Other mornings, LAROI would wake up to his and Juice’s managers saying it was time to pack up and head to Texas. Like, now. He was 15, 16 years old. “I’d never experienced anything like that,” he said. “Especially coming from Australia, where everything is kind of like its own bubble.” Not that 15-year-olds outside Australia would be used to it either. But such is the meteoric ascent of a talented young rapper circa 2020. Born Charlton Howard in 2003, LAROI—whose name is a reference to the Kamilaroi Indigenous nation, in which he has family roots—grew up in the suburbs of Sydney, and began to work on music when he was a pre-teen. Like Juice WRLD, Post Malone or even Lil Peep, LAROI’s key tracks—“ALWAYS DO”, “TRAGIC” and the Juice WRLD collaboration “GO”—blend ultra-melodic trap with shades of alternative rock and classic pop, a fusion that has put him on the front burner of pop-rap. His first album, F*CK LOVE, hit the Top 10 before he turned 18. - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History 2020 43 GO (The Kid LAROI & Juice WRLD) -1- 2020 38 SO DONE -2- 2020 66 ALWAYS DO -AT- 2020 02 WITHOUT YOU -3- MILLIONAIRE 2020 63 Reminds Me Of You (Juice WRLD & The Kid LAROI) -NAS- 2021 47 No Return (Polo G feat. With a mere eight months of production under his belt, the track has marked a transformative milestone. Derived from D-Block Europe track “Ferrari Horses,” featuring the enchanting vocals of songstress RAYE, the producer’s trance-infused adaptation was conceived on his university laptop earlier this year. Enthralled by the captivating vocals, he envisioned a euphoric pluck and an assertive bassline that would escalate into an explosive drop, breathing new life into the track’s sonic landscape. - GRM Daily Top 100 Chart History cassö 2023 02 Prada (cassö, RAYE & D-Block Europe) -NAS- MILLIONAIRE 2024 92 Zeros (cassö & Jazzy feat. But where those early pursuits immersed him in his country’s rich musical traditions, his first single as a solo artist took aim at its most formidable institution. Few debut tracks come out swinging as hard as “Take Me to Church,” a doomy anti-gospel sermon that set its crosshairs on the hectoring and hypocrisies of the Catholic Church, delivered in a commanding, corrupted-choir-boy voice imbued with equal doses of grace and grit. That striking single topped charts around the world and scored Hozier a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year, but the self-titled debut album it introduced also showcased a singer-songwriter with a deft command of sweet soulful rockers (“Someone New”) and dreamy folk reveries (“Like Real People Do”). The dichotomy between rage and romanticism would only become more pronounced on 2019’s Wasteland Baby!, where some of Hozier’s prettiest performances to date (like the delicate finger-picked hymn “Shrike”) rub up against the righteous fury of “Nina Cried Power,” a spirited, Mavis Staples-assisted protest anthem that takes Hozier back to church to further rattle the steeple. - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History 2014 02 Take Me To Church -1- MILLIONAIRE 2015 19 Someone New -3- 2015 69 From Eden -2/4- 2018 87 Nina Cried Power (feat.
