November 8, 20241 yr Its a charming #1 imo and I prefer it to 'I Love You I'm Sorry' or 'Sailor Song'. Nice to get another week without Christmas songs in the top 40. Hope PAWSA makes top 40 in the New Year.
November 8, 20241 yr Wham and Marih in top 40 f*** stick season and blood two sweet and pineapple Want wham and Mariah top 40 but moaning about 3 long running hits make it make sense
November 8, 20241 yr The same equivalent chart from this time last year was on the 10th November and those extra 2 days would've allowed for the Xmas increase to take hold further. Given Wham! and Mariah are on ACR, I'd say they're probably where they would be anyway and next week they'll be well into the T40. With a 20 place difference or so from last year's equivalent chart, I doubt two days would make a big difference.
November 9, 20241 yr Have to admit, it is nice to not have the Christmas songs enter the top 40 this week. It’s inevitable it will start but it’s nice to hold back on them. I need a couple of weeks before the Christmas madness starts. Same to this, I mean you don’t have to go from listening to ‘Thriller’ one week to ‘Last Christmas’ the next, give it a week or two for autumn to finish. Course I don’t when it’s the same repetitive songs going in the chart every year and it’s also made the race for Christmas #1 single less excitable. I used to get excited for the race for Christmas #1 but now I don’t. If Wham! or Mariah are constantly gonna get Christmas #1, OCC need to do something about it. My suggestion would be to remove streaming from Christmas songs that are more than 3 years old The chart is meant to reflect what’s popular. In the year 2000 the likes of Slade, Wizzard and the Pogues would have been top 10 each year if streaming was included now it’s Mariah/Wham/Buble. In 20 years it’ll be different as tastes and history/listenership moves on and gets older. Surely that’s exactly what the chart is meant to reflect for the history books, not what you would like it to be in your head?
November 9, 20241 yr The chart is meant to reflect what’s popular. Like I said, OCC need to do something about it if Wham! and Mariah are constantly gonna be going #1 or Christmas #1 every year. That’s why I said a suggestion to remove streaming from Christmas songs that are over 3 years old or put every single non-Christmas song on SCR during the Christmas rush if they don’t want to remove Christmas songs from the singles chart. They did something about compilations constantly going #1 and denying artists a #1 album by creating the compilation chart so they can do something about it if the same songs are constantly getting Christmas #1 every year Edited November 9, 20241 yr by Hadji
November 9, 20241 yr To be fair, AIWFCIY has spent ONE week at #1 since 2021... Only because of Last Christmas. I can see AIWFCIY beating LC to #1 this year
November 9, 20241 yr The only non-Christmas song actually denied the #1 spot by Wham! or Mariah was 'willow' by Taylor Swift, and streams were so pitifully low at the end of 2020 that it didn't really deserve to get there anyway. When all the Christmas songs have their streams halved and are still comfortably #1 I don't see what else you can do without making the chart completely unrepresentative of what's actually going on.
November 9, 20241 yr Could be argued that the streams of old Christmas songs are similar to an album bomb (a very long-running album bomb) and that there should only be 3 songs allowed in the chart per record label?
November 9, 20241 yr personally I don't mind cos it's just a few weeks per year I mean charts have to reflect what people are streaming wouldn't make sense to ignore Lat Xmas when the song is doing 3 million streams on Xmas day and instead give the #1 to some non-Xmas song that did 100K
November 10, 20241 yr Well, Gracie coming in to prevent Sabrina having my least favourite #1 of the year oop. (She still has my second and third least favourites though x). Real shame 'APT.' ran out of momentum as that would have been up there with the best #1s of the year but ah well. Happy to see 'The Door' finally making the top 10 and a nice new peak for 'WILDFLOWER' which has grown on me a lot. Gaga has two songs in top 15 for the first time since... maybe ever?? She very nearly had 4 songs in the top 15 the week 'Hair' came out! ('The Edge Of Glory' #6, 'Judas' #8, 'Hair' #13 and 'Born This Way' #16). There was overlap between the top 15 runs of 'Just Dance'/'Poker Face' and 'Poker Face'/'Paparazzi' too.
