Ah thank you, eep at them changing that then and then not abiding by it as Chappell went to #9 with HOT TO GO! literally the week before
Echoing the confusion at Chappell Roan being included. Also, not to the same scale, but Ezra Collective was a name I’ve recognised from way before and I see they won the Mercury Prize in 2023, so at least in a critical sense they’ve already made it.

To be honest, they are correct.

Chappell Roan deserves to be the sound of 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027, and every year for eternity, based on only 'The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess' and 'Good Luck, Babe!'! 😂

You could pick issue with quite a few of the names here as some are definitely better known than others, have had critically aclaimed albums and winners of awards elsewhere. Myles Smith has one of the biggest singles of the year for instance and won BBC Introducing Artist of the Year recently so it begs why he even needs to be included here as Radio 1 have literally broken him through already.

Theres exactly 1 way i can think of that she's technically eligible. And that's if they don't count ACR, and the cutoff is for the chart's w/e date. And even with all that, she's only eligible by 3 days.

'HOT TO GO!' first made the Top 10 on the chart announced 23 August. I can't believe they would have meant the chart without ACR, it looks like a genuine bend of the rules to let Chappell on the list just to give it more publicity and I don't think she'll win.

The rule says not MORE THAN 2 top 10 singles so they have abided by it

They should just say that an act can’t have any charting single or album. Make it completely for newbies.

What did they expect the reaction to be, what a joke!

Doesn't really matter if they're abiding by rules, it's transparent what they're doing.

As good as some of those acts are, that list is pretty depressing. You have TWO Mercury Prize winners, a Grammy award nominee and one of the most successful and talked about pop stars of the last year with a number 1 album and two huge top 10 hits, how inspiring!

This list is supposed to promote up and coming music and acts that need the exposure, with how difficult it is for new artists (bands especially) to break through these days, it's really sad that rather than go for new names, they just go for artists that will get them the most coverage and not make the list irrelevant. There are so many under-the-radar artists that could've used those slots and it's quite sad they've been denied that.

Pleased for Confidence Man getting a spot nonetheless, they feel like a band that has been gradually breaking through for a while now.

I seem to recall them picking acts that already had a significant hit or two a problem as far back as when Sam Smith won it. They might make the argument that it takes a while for an artist name to truly embed in the public conscience and so even someone who's had as good a year as Roan would benefit.

That said a lot of this does look like following rather than leading, hope the ones they choose to get the sort of coverage Last Dinner Party got are those who could really benefit.

Decided to check out some of KNEECAP's work earlier as it wasn't a familiar name to me (can't recall if they've been on the playlist, though if they have they were never on my radar). I am very impressed and would be keen on seeing them get a Top 5 placing. Even being nominated for this is enough to get people interested.

(Thanks MagicKangaroo for pointing out about the singles eligibility rule, I clearly hadn't woken up this morning when reading/posting )

This is utterly ludicrous. Lots of these have been well-established for years! This should be exclusively for acts who haven't broken through yet.

Kneecap are huge in Ireland - they have a movie as well people are raving about! They are quite controversial though! Their current album got a lot of spins on the evening shows and is really decent!

Better Way To Live is great. Think it might have been someone's Track of the Week on R1 but could be wrong. Either way, it was very firmly on my radar!

The top 10 thing is annoying me tbh. They could have (and should have tbh) nominated JADE! (Or would she not count due to success in LM etc..? Lol)

oh didn't know Kneecap was linked to th movie of the same name, seen the trailer a few times
