🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

Next up at #120 we have another bit of symphonic metal here from Xandria who are a German band that have been going since before I was born, oh my, but only got a first hit here this year naturally. A song you'll all be familiar with at #119, guess who's back? Eminem of course who riffed from his own classic 'Without Me' for 'Houdini' which was his best song in quite some time, a good bit of fun from him again and the Steve Miller Band sample works well. A song very much tailored to the winter season from Nightwish at #118, another long-standing symphonic metal band who finally broke my chart this year although 'Lanternlight' was the closing track of their album and is a lovely ballad. A rare case of a song hitting here from another personal chart discovery, at #117 is the first hit for Manchester-based band The Blinders, 'Always' having hit the Jadakissnia chart prior. The second of six appearances for Dutch duo Tinlicker who had a very great year, 'Where Did I Go' was their most recent single thrown as a loose track after the album and another solid effort from them as ever.

🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

Having had a UK chart crossover last year, Anotr followed up with the even better 'How You Feel' which of course didn't quite recreate that success (though still sitting on a substantial 42m on Spotify) but gives them a belated appearance in the Hottest 200 at #115. Next up in a year that saw more rock crossovers than ever in Thermo's hot hits it was the perfect time for the return of Linkin Park, alas without their late former lead singer however it was 'The Emptiness Machine' that got them a very belated first hit with me (my other LP faves being pre-2010). It was great to see this be so well-received by the general public too and was certainly the strongest effort from the new album anyway. Another long-standing band with a recent breakthrough at #113 from Metric and whilst 'Days Of Oblivion' is certainly no match to 'Doomscroller' it's a great rock ballad that has stood out amongst what I've heard of theirs after having caught it off Jim's personal chart. More rock at #112 this one being a repeat of Blackshape who of course gave me one of my biggest BJSC hits in 'ITIIITIATIIHYLIHYL' - a very outstanding emotional piece here that would be comfortably top 20 if its chart run alas wasn't split right down the middle between years. The band are yet to actually follow it up so remain a one-hit wonder for now (the rest of their album basically plays out as one long instrumental piece so no obvious other choices of "singles" there). Basic tech house can still hit though at #111 from Sosa (UK) assisted by an all too catchy rap about a particular party drug of choice..

Another one from Klangphonics at #110 with their particularly unique brand of electronica, three more of them still to come. The second-biggest of the Eurovision season at #109 from Lithuania's Silvester Belt assisted by a certain techno influence and rather catchy hook, also great as ever to have another sung in the native language. Although a fun song sonically the lyrics are actually read a bit the opposite when translated. British Anjunabeats signee Marsh landed another hit with 'Heartbreak', a fresh take on piano house with its melodic house influence at #108. The duo of NTO & Sofiane Pamart are back again at #107, with their album track 'Dobermann' actually becoming the instant standout upon its album release, another great mix of piano work with a vast array of synths. Another great electronic album in the year came from Justice who sit at #106 with one of their handful of entries, 'Afterimage' likewise wasn't taken as a single but a standout upon the album listen with its sharp synth hook.

DnB veteran High Contrast got another late career hit with 'Loved You So' at #105, with a familiar vocal hook though a unique work around it. The biggest hit from Charli XCX this year was most certainly '360', which is also reflected here topping out at #104. A very fresh take on modern pop which was in desperate need in the pop climate this year, providing a healthy dose of attitude which very much assisted with the album hype and was great to see its rise as a sleeper hit. Up to #103 we have Hel:sløwed & Amber Revival, a pairing that collectively broke through with one of the year's biggest hits to come but for now we have their solid follow-up effort 'Wildfire', a bit of melodic vocal trance here. Two DnB songs in one section isn't like me but here we are for at #102 we have Rameses B with the rather wild 'Get Mucky' which also takes influence from phonk, a very hyper tune which sometimes is just what we need. Just missing out on the Hottest 100 we have Pump! which is actually a collab between two well-known tech house acts who seemingly have only paired for this one song so a tad odd to create an alias for it. Anyhow 'Bananas' is quite what it says it is, sampling that Gwen Stefani hook of course. It goes hard though, that bassline and squelching synths... oof.

it certainly seems like 2nd place is the benchmark for the genre as there'll always be a fairly substantial portion of bjsc it'll never appeal to but we'll see what 2025 brings

I do prefer Grum's stuff from earlier in the decade but it's always good to hear some sound recalibration from an EDM producer

🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

We start off the Hottest 100 with perhaps the oddest inclusion yet on appearance - it followed up the big hit 'Asking' for Sonny Fodera but ultimately I underrated it quite a bit in the weekly chart, it stayed near the top of my gym/running playlist for a while though. 'Mind Still' was an interesting direction for him to go in being a more uptempo trance-inspired track. Next up was the belated debut appearance in the chart for internet critics darlings of alt-pop Magdalena Bay - their handful BJSC appearances hadn't been quite outstanding however this one taken off Jade's chart is a very interesting and intricately produced track. EDM's favourite frat bro up next with John Summit - after hitting it big with 'Where You Are' last year there was naturally a follow-up in 'Shiver' which does nothing new for him but it's solid regardless. He also appears at #96 with the very late 2023 release 'Hungover' which saw him go down a more uptempo melodic techno route with the assistance of Mathame who had previously worked with CamelPhat. He sandwiches Annalisa who came close to repping Italy in Eurovision with 'Sinceramente', a brilliant pop effort which was robbed although 'La noia' did appear earlier in the rundown too.

🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

A name in trance you've certainly seen a lot of here this decade, at #95 is another appearance for Craig Connelly who brought out another big uplifting vocal anthem in 'Be As One'. A rare find from one of the other forum song contests at #94 coming from Calva Louise, they are a British rock band although the song here has its fair amount of electronic/cyberpunk influences which helped make it sound big. Naturally there's room for a great guitar solo too. Two tracks next to each other from another name that keeps cropping up, well it had to happen this year for Tinlicker. The first of their unlikely indie crossovers at #93 saw them team up with British band Circa Waves for 'Nothing To Lose', the end result sounds perhaps like what if Coldplay had kept experimenting with dance music. At #92, one of their album tracks in 'Who I'm Not' which is a bit more of what you'd expect from them but it has much of the elements that made me get into them in the first place so was a clear stand out from the album. DJ Sabrina makes another appearance at #91 with her brilliant 'Will U B Mine', having placed in last year's top 40, which she has yet to quite replicate the greatness of.

An oldie but a goodie to start this section at #90 it's the 80s classic from Alphaville, brought back into prominence after it made a splash in the Spotify chart and further helped by cleansing my ears of the poor David Guetta re-do of it. At #89 we have Maribou State who made a belated follow-up to last year's breakthrough 'Blackoak' in 'Otherside', a bit of a different vibe to the former but I gather it's more similar to their usual style - a bit of indie-dance. Another of last year's leftovers from the top 40 at #88 from Emma Hewitt and her trance anthem 'Children' (no relation to Robert Miles), sadly she couldn't come up with an actual new hit in the year. English DJ Schak managed to turn a forgotten 80s song 'Mama Used To Say' into a modern house anthem in at #87 and at #86 we have what was the belated follow-up for Billy Gillies - 'Fair' being a more traditionally trancey effort from him catered more to the festivals than the charts which is what I would like to hear more of as the eventual attempt to recreate 'DNA' was quite the flop.

134 yes I think it was certainly a sleeper success for many here

147 I don't hugely love it but I certainly think there's many worse examples of basic dance so the disdain it got was a Bit much

I'd missed Circa Waves being on a dance song! Giving it a listen now, it's sounding quite good - Tinlicker certainly aren't afraid to work with non-conventional featured artists.

Happy to see two of my song contest entries in the last couple of sections (Alphaville were my entry to the first retro contest) - I'm delighted with how well Calva Louise did in Unknown Pleasures, its blend of genres seemed to fit there and I'm not sure if it would have fared so well in BJSC which I originally had in mind.
