December 12, 2024Dec 12 That Creator Universe thing is objectively the worst song here by miles. But Benson Boone was also be a very worthy winner. Don't mind any of the others, think the only other one I pointed was Central Cee but that was to make up the 10th point.
December 12, 2024Dec 12 I like the Kendrick and Camila songs left but would be fine with anything else winning

Kendrick Lamar ~ Not Like Us [86 points] Most hated: JosephCarey, hinterland, LiamSine, WhoOdyssey [+12] UK run: 10-{6}-11-12-13-20-21-14-11-9-12-10-9-47-57-66->16 Starting off the top 10 we have Ella Henderson further extending her chart career by going dance and sample-heavy once again, with help from a drum n bass production from Rudimental and sampling 'Pastime Paradise'/'Gangsta's Paradise'. The song took aim at her cheating man and told us no less than 12 times that he ain't got no, ain't got no, ain't got no alibi. I expect most of its disdain here came from how she used the sample and there'll be another of those a bit later on. Central Cee has perhaps grown somewhat in Buzzjack's affections, having finished in the top three with 'Doja' and 'Let Go', his big hit of the year 'Band4Band' doesn't quite replicate that level of dislike. Although it was a big Dave-less Cench hit so it's still here. A fairly average UK drill track, it was "assisted" by American rapper Lil Baby who we really could do without although it certainly helped the song commercially. 'Beautiful Things' to much collective groaning (and naturally a few supporters too) became one of the year's monster smashes having entered in February and it taking up to Christmas for it to eventually depart the top 40 (for the time being). As a pop-rock ballad of two halves it manages to be both a rather boring slog and then way over the top with the belting later on. It was a close call for my least fave out of this and 'That's So True' although ultimately they would've placed the same either way. Meanwhile the "winner" of the infamous rap battle here was Kendrick Lamar, whose 'Not Like Us' places well above Drake's effort but it was also a much bigger chart hit which may've helped. It was praised as one of the greatest diss tracks by critics and had a noticeably negative impact on Drake's reputation, though some here clearly found the whole thing very ugly and annoying to listen to - with four +12s it had the most of any song in competition. Kendrick has since released a surprise album following the nomination period so time will tell if any songs from that will be quite as disliked this time next year (unlikely).
December 12, 2024Dec 12 'Alibi' should never have worked on paper but actually it was a bit of a tune - doesn't belong anywhere near the top 10 here!
December 12, 2024Dec 12 Didn't like 'Alibi' probably because I revere the original sample. The chorus of 'Beautiful Things' was very unbeautiful.
December 12, 2024Dec 12 Ok well thank god 'Big Foot' is ahead of 'Not Like Us' at least. I was genuinely worried that might not be the case. ('Not Like Us' being ahead of 'Family Matters' is a joke on a lesser level tho x (although I actually like both songs lol, as much as Drake obviously lost the beef I do still think that and 'Push Ups' were genuinely well made and entertaining diss tracks, they just can't stack up to Kendrick)). At least the rest of the Internet knows 'Not Like Us' was the song of the summer xx Glad 'Timeless' wasn't too high in the end, my 2nd favourite song on the list after 'Not Like Us'. Lots of the songs I voted for falling out in the 11-15 region though aw, surprised KSI is so low. Only voted for 3 of the top 10. Also a little surprised 'BAND4BAND' is so low, would probably have predicted that to contend for the win, but I do think it's one of the better songs Cench has put out recently (despite a fairly subpar Lil Baby contribution) so glad to see it x 'Alibi' and 'Beautiful Things' are both decent for me, I think the sample flip was done tastefully enough on the former, certainly much better than any of Guetta's, and the latter has a good chorus but never really got into it that much as a whole as I don't care for the verses at all.
December 13, 2024Dec 13 It’s been a very strong year overall actually, and I think that’s reflected in the fact that there isn’t too much I enthusiastically dislike here. The cheap samplings of old classics tend to be the most grating for me, but I can see why they work well for the younger generation and going viral on social media. My top 2 scorers were Creator Universe and Kygo / Ava, so one of those Probably the strongest feeling I have about any of this is that “Not Like Us” should be nowhere near this chart at all, let alone the Top 10. I quite like “Carnival” as well - suspect it’s more disdain for the artist than anything else. All the rest of the remaining 6 were in my vote, with Creator Universe and Kygo / Ava my top 2 scorers.
December 13, 2024Dec 13 Thank God Alibi and Beautiful Things are not top 5. I like both. Band4Band is one of the better ones from Central Cee imo. I don't love it just don't hate it. Kendrick should have been top 5.I demand a recount! :P

December 13, 2024Dec 13 Benson much too high, shocking taste on display from y'all Agreed, it's a great song, just vastly overplayed which I guess is the issue
December 13, 2024Dec 13 Alibi too low. Just unbearably grating with the sample of a song that should be left well alone. I really like Beautiful Things! Can understand why it annoyed quite a few folk though
December 13, 2024Dec 13 Author #06. Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign ~ Carnival [86 points] Most hated: gasman449, Riser [+12] UK run: 12-13-9-{5}-8-8-16-18-22->9 #05. Camila Cabello ~ I Luv It (feat. Playboi Carti) [102 points] Most hated: My… Bratwurst!, awardinary, Calum [+12] UK run: {61}-65R(3)->2 #04. Ice Spice ~ Think U The Sh*t (Fart) [107 points] Most hated: My… Bratwurst!, PedroNL25, Viper* [+10] UK run: {75}->1 Controversial rapper Kanye West collaborated with Ty Dolla $ign for two albums this year which ultimately produced only one lasting chart smash in 'Carnival' which is the song that lands up here. Kanye's verse on this itself got some eyerolls from comparing himself to infamous sex offenders and even that aside the song is quite the sonic mess and further proof of how much he has fell off creatively, ultimately the song just sounds like it's trying to be annoying which is a bit of a theme for this section.. Camila Cabello had not so long ago had one of the biggest hits of her career by duetting with Ed Sheeran on a summery Latin pop song. So naturally the logical next step was to throw away any remaining goodwill she had by attempting to out-brat Charli XCX with a hyper pop comeback single. The general consensus however was that it simply didn't work and just sounded like an annoying mess. Some of those vocals, yikes. And to make it even worse Playboi Carti was invited for no good reason from the 2 minute mark to the end when the song could've just... stopped. Seriously though can the industry just stop endorsing Playboi Carti. 2023's fad rapper of the year Ice Spice attempted to maintain some relevance by, well you did see the title of the song, and naturally that line got rather clowned upon as soon as it premiered and solidified her reputation as just a meme rapper. Besides that, the production had a fairly obnoxious synth line and minimal beat and Ice Spice just spends the whole time bragging about the usual. Tomorrow evening then we have our medalist reveal... Creator Universe vs. Kygo/Ava Max vs. Nicki Minaj
December 14, 2024Dec 14 not BuzzJack being exposed as misogynistic and antisemitic with Kanye not top 5
December 14, 2024Dec 14 Author #03. Creator Universe ~ I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday [108 points] Most hated: …ready for it, Dobbo, JulianT [+12] UK run: {29}->1 RUSYdr-Y664 Creator Universe was the ill-attempted Xmas #1 race charity effort for last year, made up of a load of TikTok 'influencers' that most of us had never heard of. They decided to take on one of the most beloved British Christmas songs originally sang by Wizzard in the 70s. As you'd expect it was a badly sung poor cover version (with some attempting a "comedy" angle to it) that thankfully didn't gain half as much traction that LadBaby had done for the five years previous (and not even out-performing the original version that week). Perhaps, spelling the belated death of the ensemble charity single (further proven by this year's Band Aid remix doing f***-all).
