Biography

The country world feigned surprise when, after three albums of Music Row-indebted songcraft, Taylor Swift formally embraced pop on 2012’s Red. But no one should have been shocked: Any 14-year-old capable of persuading her parents to move from suburban Pennsylvania to Nashville for her career clearly has ambition to burn. And the thrill of following Swift’s rise has been watching her execute it flawlessly, largely because her melodic intelligence is equal to that ambition. Her early, youthful love songs heralded 2010's newly self-possessed Speak Now—which showed off her scathing wit—and evolved into knowing, ironclad pop fare that held its own against boisterous Max Martin production on 1989, her fifth album, titled after her birth year. Throughout, her songwriting has blurred the lines between the public and private, burying enough real-life clues (about, say, scarves and Starbucks) to make clear that only Swift can own her narrative, thank you very much, while still retaining a lyrical elegance. Though 2017’s reputation might have been perceived as a gorgeously constructed piece of dramatic theater—its attendant heroes and villains all real-life characters from Swift's public feuds—all that spectacle proved an attention-grabbing cover for her most romantic album yet. She turned up the romance even more on 2019’s Lover, but it was 2020’s folklore and its companion, evermore—ruminative, relatively lo-fi albums written and recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic—that earned her the Apple Music Award for Songwriter of the Year. She followed those up in 2022 with Midnights, which she wrote and produced with Jack Antonoff, and described as "the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life." In 2023, Swift undertook one of the most ambitious road shows of all time: the multi-year Eras Tour, which saw her presenting new and classic material across more than 100 locales worldwide. It was just one of many reasons she was named Apple Music's Artist of the Year for 2023. Swift returned to the soft, comfortable, bed-like sonics of Midnights for her 11th album, 2024’s THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. A study in extremes and heightened emotions, the record—which features guest turns from Post Malone and Florence + the Machine—is her most specific, candid, and unsparing work to date. - Apple Music

I don't think sweeping generalisations about an artist's audience, meant in a negative sense, are very helpful and simply serve as condescending remarks to any posters here who do like that artist or song. It just comes across as snobbery to me and that's my least favourite thing to see in music fans. It's totally fine to dislike a song or artist but don't put others down for liking them!

I enjoy Fortnight a lot, not Taylor's best lead single but it's a lush track and I really appreciate Posty's contribution too.

Biography

A style-shifting pop star who got her start as a teen dance prodigy, Tate McRae is every bit a dynamic multi-hyphenate. Born in 2003 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, she worked her way up to the finals on So You Think You Can Dance at age 13, following other impressive milestones as a live performer. McRae answered her overnight TV success by uploading a series of singles that showcased the preternatural depth of her singing and songwriting. Signed to a major label when she was 16, she struck gold globally with 2020’s “you broke me first,” adding ominous trap beats to an intimate lament. But rather than be pigeonholed by weepy ballads, McRae quickly showcased her full range with convincing forays into dreamy alt-rock and purring R&B on 2022’s i used to think i could fly. Coming off even more emboldened on 2023’s THINK LATER, she greets her entry into her twenties with a well-earned sense of confidence on tracks like the chirping kiss-off “exes.” Echoing her penchant for inhabiting a deep bench of musical styles without breaking her stride, she seems just as much at home in the role of a nonchalant heartbreaker as in the role of the one at home nursing a broken heart. - Apple Music

Biography

Born in 1999 in the environs of Oxford, Artemas Diamandis makes eclectic alternative pop that sounds as if he digested all of the music of the ’90s in the womb. It can be hard to say if any one of his songs is specifically indebted to the rock, pop, R&B, hip-hop, or electronic music of the era, but the debt is always there. “Don’t You Start,” for example, is a bouncy Daft Punk-meets-Blur dance party that’s as sad as it is sexy. Then there’s the falsetto bedroom-pop epic “You Were a Dream,” which has bits of Portishead, The Cure, and Nine Inch Nails hovering around the edges. It’s the kind of well-made chaos that would make a ’90s wunderkind like Beck proud, yet it’s made possible by a younger generation’s ability to nonchalantly blend influences as if it were their birthright. With musicians as inventive and joyfully irreverent as Artemas remixing the past this way, the future of music is in good hands. - Apple Music

One of the best hits of the year for sure! and my favourite artist discovery of the year, this song's parent mixtape is SUCH a good listen!
This now behind Greedy and Fortnight after overtaking them last week?

Oh I made a mistake there sorry - will fix it when I get a moment.

Great that Artemas made the Top 20!

this was great to see become a big hit

I quite liked the new track he put out recently too so perhaps I ought to check the whole album out

Very underrated track here! Seems like every station has their own variation of how they censor "hit it from the back"

I was so excited to hear "Mark Ambro" again (yeah I know it was Michael Marcagi) that I completely forgot to write about 'Fortnight' and 'greedy', which is no loss.

'i like the way you kiss me' though, what a tune, and what a moment my Unknown Pleasures artist of last year getting a breakthrough hit was!

Biography

Sophie Ellis-Bextor had her first breakouts as the frontwoman for the ’90s Britpop act TheAudience and as a duet partner for Manic Street Preachers. Yet the singer—who was born in Hounslow in 1979—found her true calling as a dance-pop diva when she contributed vocals to “Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love)”, an ebullient house track by DJ Spiller that became a No. 1 single in 2000. Ellis-Bextor continued her momentum with her 2001 solo debut, Read My Lips, which showcased her irresistible blend of wit, effervescence and vulnerability, along with her unabashed love of disco, on cuts like the glossy “Music Gets the Best of Me” and the winking “Murder on the Dancefloor”. In the years that followed, she broadened her horizons, working with singer-songwriter Ed Harcourt on 2014’s ambitious, folk-tinged Wanderlust, incorporating elements of Latin music on 2016’s Familia and arranging her biggest hits for orchestra on 2019’s The Song Diaries. Ellis-Bextor broke into the U.S. in the early 2020s when “Murder” was included in a pivotal moment of the black sex comedy Saltburn; her first North American tour followed in 2024. - Apple Music
