December 31, 20241 yr Somehow I can't quite imagine them playing a Christmas song on the 3rd January that's fallen to the low top 40 (in this hypothetical, improbable scenario) Be hilarious if they did though just for the reaction :w00t:
December 31, 20241 yr Be hilarious if they did though just for the reaction :w00t: They're reading this forum if they do play it just to troll everyone. I can't imagine the groans and the four pages of meltdowns that would occur. Would be funny for lols but as said already it won't happen and won't be in the Top 40 either
December 31, 20241 yr “Merry Christmas” stayed Top 40 in the first week of January 2022 so I don’t think it would be anything that Earth shattering if Wham! Or Tom Grennan managed one more week at the lower end. Edit actually think it was starred out due to the 3 track rule but would have been around #39.
December 31, 20241 yr On New Year’s Day in 2021 the whole chart was basically Christmas stuff and they played it then
December 31, 20241 yr Where are all the new hits or rising songs from the lower end - remember when the Encanto songs exploded into life after new year and I never saw that coming, Raye in 2023 and Noah last year, but this year I could have comfortably guessed most of the top 4 (bar the few Christmas songs still being there in the update). Guess Chrystal has been building gradually, and Messy obviously gaining momentum, but there’s not much else! And there were plenty of songs by big artists which were in the low 100s end of last year which should surely be primed as hits now.
December 31, 20241 yr New entries in the 1st top 40 of each year for the past 3 years: 2022 7 (with 9 pre-existing hits reaching new peaks) 2023 5 (with 10 pre-existing hits reaching new peaks) 2024 8 (with 8 pre-existing hits reaching new peaks) Meanwhile in 2025 we're looking at 2 new entries at most with 3 songs that previously entered reaching new peaks. It's pretty sad Edited December 31, 20241 yr by gasman449
December 31, 20241 yr I mean, are people seeking out new music on this particular week? I listened to at least 4,000 new songs last year but absolutely 0 in the past week because there's nothing out. It's just not a priority I'd think.
December 31, 20241 yr If one ends up at 40 they'll definitely play it! I'm sure they have skipped #40 a few times (and would do again if it were to be Wham! this week). It's just not a priority I'd think. As per the post just above the disappointment for me this week is not that there's no brand new hits, just that the Christmas exodus seems to have revealed almost nothing that was bubbling under (either the top 40 or top 100) over late November/December. It's definitely a markedly more stagnant start to the year than usual.

I was listening to pick of the pops on r2 on Saturday which was 1991 and 2003 and during the 2003 rundown, they played the Darkness instead of skipping them
December 31, 20241 yr I suspect that if Wham! do cling onto the top 40 that they will be played whatever position they end up.
December 31, 20241 yr I'm sure they have skipped #40 a few times (and would do again if it were to be Wham! this week). Think since Jack took over they always play 40 and make a big deal of it unless they absolutely can't, think they've only ever skipped Suicidal Idol, One Of The Girls and The Color Violet during his time as host Edited December 31, 20241 yr by gasman449
December 31, 20241 yr There will be loads of new songs released in the next month! I have 5/6 songs ready to add to my playlist next week which I didn’t add in November!

It's definitely a markedly more stagnant start to the year than usual. It's also a self-perpetuating issue though. Anyone who waits for someone else to make the hits, and listens to songs only once they impact the charts are just contributing to a listening pattern that prevents those new songs from breaking in. In general though I don't think it's a big deal if there's a slow week or two.
December 31, 20241 yr New albums from bad bunny and the weeknd around the corner Lady Gaga's album is also slated for Feb, so likely will have the tracklisting/next single announced/released in January.
January 1, 20251 yr I highly doubt they'll play any Christmas songs on Friday since most TV and radio have stopped using/playing Christmas presentation/songs by now.
January 1, 20251 yr other years xmas songs dropped after new years eve .that was quick.we have seen Wham no1 at first week of the year
