9- OUT OF TOUCH- Uniting Nations (6.973)

Afternoon all :hi: rooting for Imogen Heap, JADE and Sam Barber/Avery Anna to make the top 40 this week.

My top 3 favourites from each retro chart:

2024

01. Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder on the Dancefloor

02. Dua Lipa - Houdini

03. Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer

Ari was unlucky to stall at #2 with 71k+ sales last year, strong numbers for all the top 3.

2020

01. Dua Lipa - Don't Start Now

02. The Weeknd - Blinding Lights

03. Roddy Ricch - The Box

Dua and The Weeknd were both killing the 80s synth throwback sound!

'The Box' did so well on the Billboard Hot 100, 11 weeks at #1 iirc. That remains an earworm.

2015

01. Hozier - Take Me to Church

02. Taylor Swift - Blank Space

03. Tchami - Promesses (feat. Kaleem Taylor)

Oh I've not thought about 'Promesses' in a while but I really liked that at the time.

2010

01. Lady Gaga - Bad Romance

02. Owl City - Fireflies

03. Plan B - Stay Too Long

'Fireflies' was a pretty unique #1  'Replay', that current chart-topper, is a great time capsule with the "iPod stuck on replay" lyric.

I don't think I cared that much about 'Stay Too Long' at first but grew to love it.

2005

01. The Killers - Somebody Told Me

02. Soul Central - Strings of Life (Stronger on My Own) (feat. Kathy Brown)

03. Uniting Nations - Out of Touch

'Somebody Told Me' is my favourite song by The Killers

The house production, vocals and lyrics of 'Strings of Life' are pretty uplifting.

I knew the Uniting Nations version of 'Out of Touch' before the original so still has a special place in my heart, an infectious melody.

2000

01. Artful Dodger - Re-Rewind (the Crowd Say Bo Selecta) (feat. Craig David)

02. Manic Street Preachers - The Masses Against the Classes

03. William Orbit - Barber's Adagio for Strings

Manics storming in to a new millennium with a chart-topper *.* shame it's pretty forgotten from them now.

1995

01. N-Trance - Set You Free

02. East 17 - Stay Another Day

03. Ini Kamoze - Here Comes the Hotstepper

A wonderful, euphoric smash from N-Trance there  I wish they'd had more hits like this instead of the weak dance-rap versions of classics.

I was reminded of 'Here Comes the Hotstepper' just yesterday as someone entered the Alesha Dixon song 'Ransom' to the latest Pop Forum Song Contest on here, which of course interpolates it. Can't say that version does much for me but the original is a classic.

That Alicia song was… a discovery.

Biography

There’s something about Dean Lewis that feels absolutely unguarded. That’s due in equal part to his confessional yet oh-so-relatable lyrics and to the palpable quiver in his singing when his songs hit an emotional climax, as introduced on his breakout 2016 debut single, “Waves.” Born Dean Lewis Grant Loaney in Sydney in 1987, Lewis wasted no time making sure that sudden success was no fluke. After the humble tune went multiplatinum in Australia and landed key placement on some high-profile American TV shows, he topped it with 2018’s “Be Alright.” The lead single from his debut album, A Place We Knew, it sits at more of a simmer by comparison but still slides right under the skin, earning him a slot as an Apple Music Up Next honoree. His heartsick second album, 2022’s The Hardest Love, felt even more personal still, dwelling on unresolved romantic feelings. By contrast, 2024’s aptly titled The Epilogue saw him cutting loose certain relationships alongside his own long-standing fixation on success. “I attached my self-worth to the numbers,” he told Apple Music. “So, this album is me saying goodbye to that whole period of my life.” - Apple Music

(for the record, I don't see the chart in advance so the "missing out" songs are tracks that very likely don't have a shot of being top 40 this week!)
Hoping it girl and indigo both make it in, but I am expecting an appearance for Hozier do I wanna know so that’ll probs keep one of them out :(. Also hope to see headlock as high as possible, and hope apt has somehow done it though I have low expectations. Would be the dream though! And then ready for Lola to take it next week then!

Those top 3 sales from this time in 2024 really set the tone for much of the year, with plenty of competition and high figures at the top. Feels like a distant memory now sadly.

Also Sophie could have been a long running number 1 with the same level of streams this year.

hoping for Indigo, Hozier, Jade, Imogen, DTMF all made it :o

they're playing bizarre songs in the dance anthems... the opposite of anthems :D

Biography

Noah Kahan pens tenderhearted meditations on life’s ups and downs that are rustic enough for country cabins yet infectious enough for the pop charts. The singer-songwriter was born in 1997 and grew up on a farm in Vermont. He spent his youth refining his folk picking on guitar, banjo, and mandolin while transforming his voice into the raspy falsetto captured on his debut hit, 2017's "Hurt Somebody." Recorded while bouncing between New York, L.A., and points in between, Kahan’s first two full-lengths, 2019’s Busyhead and 2021’s I Was / I Am, showcase an artist sharpening his pop instincts. When the Covid pandemic hit in 2020, Kahan returned to Vermont and—feeling nostalgic for his New England childhood—stripped his music to its gritty soul, resulting in 2022's breakout album, Stick Season. He went on to reimagine several cuts, including a version of “Dial Drunk” featuring rapper Post Malone, that reflect a gift for shaping folk and pop into increasingly novel expressions. - Apple Music
