Top of the Pops on BBC4 tonight had Hot Chocolate - You Sexy Thing on which reached the top 10 in 1975, 1987 and 1997.

It got me thinking as to how many other songs have done this, outside of the obvious Christmas songs I can only think of 2 others:

Running Up That Hill (1985, 2012, 2022)

Three Lions (1996, 1998, 2006, 2010, 2018, 2021, 2024)

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Technically a Christmas song tho but wouldn’t have thought of it.

John Lennon - 'Imagine'

1975 - #6

1980 - #1

1999 - #3

obviously sad circumstances on the second occasion but yeah, this was the first to pop into my head!

Think they've all been mentioned already - these are the ones I know of, including Christmas songs:

4 decades Baddiel and Skinner / Lightning Seeds - 3 Lions (1996, 1998 / 2006 / 2010, 2018 / 2021, 2024)

4 decades Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You (1994 / 2007 / 2016-19 / 2020-24)

4 decades Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York (1987 / 2005-07 / 2017-19 / 2020-24)

3 decades Band Aid - Do They Know It’s Christmas? (1984-85 / 2017-19 / 2020, 2024)

3 decades Brenda Lee - Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree (1962 / 2017 / 2021-24)

3 decades Frankie Goes To Hollywood - The Power Of Love (1984 / 1993 / 2000)

3 decades Hot Chocolate - You Sexy Thing (1975 / 1987 / 1997)

3 decades John Lennon - Imagine (1975 / 1980 / 1999)

3 decades Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) (1985 / 2012 / 2022)

3 decades Shakin’ Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone (1985 / 2017-19 / 2020-21, 2023)

3 decades Wham! - Last Christmas (1984-85 / 2016-19 / 2020-24)

I don't even remember 'Running Up That Hill' going top 10 in 2012! What was the reason for that, can someone jog my memory?

The London Olympics!

More impressive that only 5 arnt christmas songs, and technically only 4 have done it organically
When Running Up That Hill charted in 2012 I think it's worth noting that it is a different recording to the one in 1985 and 2022

Not really. Released in November and with a Nativity themed video but the song itself bears no relation to Christmas.

Unchained Melody comes to mind.

I think the idea was the same song by the same artist which charted in multiple decades. But otherwise that's a good shout, not only was it top 10 in three different decades but also number one in three different decades! (see also: With A Little Help From My Friends)
