Alright so to look further at it, something I find myself habitually doing is sorting the kworb chart by days charting and see how old the 45th-ish (about as much as fits on my monitor) newest song is on the chart. When we're in real dire straits, I've seen the Australian one get to around 100 days charting (maybe 80 in the UK). Currently in the UK it's 35 which is really good. A lot of Tate McRae album tracks but they're still new songs people are listening to whatever way you look at it.

Anyway, I did make that graph I wanted to make

I couldn't go back further because my old tweets wouldn't load, but the chart starts in February 2023 and ends at present. I've been keeping track of this very specific stat on a weekly basis for several years now because it fascinates me and is a solid barometer on the state of new music. I remember it was a big moment around 2019/2020 when it started to go over 100 for the first time, and it seemed the trend would keep up, but it just hasn't. This week, we nearly hit the lowest number of 'old' songs in the chart in about 6 years! The only time it was ever lower was last year when Taylor Swift (and to a lesser extent Billie Eilish) was taking up pristine real estate with her new album for several weeks.

Yes, this isn't the UK chart although I do think it follows a very similar pattern. Yes, it's not everyone's definition of new music, but I think the core principle, that less of the chart is made up of oldies listened to by people will no interest in new music, is more important to the perpetuation of new music than whether or not some songs that may well take off in the weeks to come have charged right out the gate to do so.

Teddy pineapple get rest next week official chart then become joke

Well get ready because he performed all 3 of his tracks at the BRITs in a medley lmaoooo!

We had:

Sabrina Carpenter - Espresso / Bed Chem

Teddy Swims - Bad Dreams / The Door / Lose Control

Myles Smith - Nice To Meet You / Stargazing

JADE - Angel of My Dreams (a tiny bit of IT girl) Performance of the night, imo.

The Last Dinner Party - Nothing Matters

Lola Young - Messy This already seems to be on her official YT channel

Sam Fender - People Watching

Ezra Collective & Jorja Smith - ??? I turned it off after Sam's performance as everything was pretty predictable.

I feel like I'm missing something else... Quite a few songs got played in the background/walk on songs for presenters etc... 'Abracadabra' sticking out as that seemed particularly loud lmao! (Made me jump :') )

EDIT: Oooohh they also did a Liam Payne Tribute and featured him singing 'Little Things' pretty heavily in it.

Ezra Collective started out performing 'Victory Dance' and then Jorja Smith jumped in with her song 'Little Things'!

Speaking of 'Little Things', the One Direction song of the same name was heavily featured in the Liam Payne tribute section. 💔

There's a graph I want to make (it'll take a while), but I feel like new music is really thriving lately?? I've been surprised at the rate in which some immovable objects have been getting booted down the charts. Also those Tate McRae & Sam Fender albums that came out only a week ago have done very well I think. If you need a constant IV drip of new hits every single week, or think a song is old news because it's a couple of months old, you're gonna run into this issue, but I'm not seeing it right now.

me too, I've been pretty impressed with the turnover and frequency of new entries in the upper regions of the charts in 2025 so far, not really getting the complaints from others on here!

also ACR doing it's job nicely by large

The first 7 songs listed here - many of which will probably get boosts this week despite having been around since the Cretaceous period - are literally 7 of my least favourite songs of last year 😬

Interesting post by Dircadirca above, and I personally think that there have been loads of interesting movements on charts recently, even though nothing NEW has been mega smash. Kendrick's domination for 3 weeks was pretty unexpected and that resulted some new peaks for songs that had been on charts for a while - not YEARS like some of the worst cases we have had cough Beautiful Things cough. In general things are pretty interesting, Stick Season and Mr. Brightside are not in top 40, and Gaga is releasing on Friday so all is good lol

new Benson now #4 on Amazon with Beautiful Things at #5

on Apple

1 Messy

72 new Benson

Charli xcx is experiencing a bit of a Brits effect on Apple following her domination last night:

#90 Guess (feat. Billie Eilish) [+76]

#186 Von dutch [re-entry]

#193 Apple [re-entry]

I guess the apple could turn yellow or green... brat

Pink Pony now ahead of Not Like Us, Benson out of the top 200, Anxiety up to 23 and Guess up to 33. No big BRITs impact yet, Messy is actually doing 20k less than last Saturday

Some very large climbers for no good reason

#50 (+68) Unwritten

#52 (+73) Austin (Boots Stop Workin')

#62 (+97) greedy

It’s high enough as it is so I doubt it’ll do enough streams to get reset

Great to see PPC the highest SCR song on Spotify. Hopefully, it goes #1 on Friday

insane that the new Benson is up to #4 on Amazon but out of the top 200 on Spotify

Pitbull only had one show in the UK, and that was well over a week ago now.

But clips from it went viral with much of the crowd turning up in bald caps, and he announced more for the summer, so lots are talking about him right now.

Presumably the bug BRITs effect won’t be noticeable u til tomorrow’s update, right? By the time the BRITs had finished last night, it was about 11pm.

Fully expecting ‘Messy’ to get back to number 1. I hope Angel Of My Dreams can re enter the top 200.

Spotify user must like old music benson new one should not been out top 200 all ready

Going to out myself as responsible for this sort of thing: I don't listen to new music on Saturdays generally. I do that on the Friday, and won't put new stuff into rotation until after the weekend. If we want to subscribe to the idea of New Music Friday as a concept, you're inevitably going to see declines like this, even for the biggest of hits. "As It Was" by Harry Styles remained at #1 but declined from 1.2 million streams to 0.8 million streams in a single Saturday when it first came out, a very similar decline percentage-wise to Benson going #61->#201 in a single day.
