Plenty of other artists manage to tie in physicals with release week so I'm not sure I'm buying that argument!

Not often with singles. Most major artists delay single physical releases the same way. They do with albums, but Album physical sales are far more significant to Album release than singles physical sales are to singles release, so it's worth the risk.

For the first time since 2016 Ed had no songs in the year end top 100 last year. Perfect was in every year since its release, Shape Of You missed the one in 2020 but made every year's list up to 2022,

  • Fixed that for you 😄

but makes no sense to make such an effort

don't forget she's releasing 5 different vinyl singles

and release them 6 months after the release date

I think this is with the USA in mind. Airplay/radio can take 6 months to peak so they could give a boost at just the right time (for the record I’m not sure this one has the legs for that but think this is the thinking)

Really? Jade released physicals with her single just last week. Some artists do delay by a few weeks but I've never heard of a 6 month delay between digital and physical releases for a single!

Yeah she basically waited 5 months after premiering to release to streaming to then 6 months after physicals really doesn't make sense

If you're talking specifically about vinyl then yes artists do sometimes release them much later, but there's no reason CD singles couldn't be produced quickly and shipped at the same time as digital release.

I think if you can divorce vinyl from the context of 'This exists solely to artificially induce #1 hits that otherwise wouldn't be', then I think it's probably advisable to stagger the release a bit? Can give the song a jolt back to its momentum and probably has more potential buyers once people are familiar with the song in question.

But then unless I'm misremembering, I thought I was seeing discussion a couple weeks ago about the Fontaines single release being idiotic because the lack of a physical was gonna cost them their first top 40 hit. Except they ended up making the top 40 in the end anyway, so who cares?

So we have a bit of everything from people releasing vinyl singles in week 1

and others in week 72

I think if you have a big fanbase and your song is likely to peak in week 1, it's better to synchronise the physical

as they make help in reaching a higher position

sure Fontaines could have been top 20 if synchronized

You still don't want the full production to leak

I don’t think leaks really impact the charts any more. Music is so easily accessible now it’s more work to track them down.

The only thing I can think of with Chappell's physicals being that far away, is that must be the date her next album is out and their main focus is giving the song a Hot 100 boost week.

I don’t think there is any strategy behind it tbh it just wasn’t an immediate priority. I imagine if they get them done earlier they’ll send them before then

Which means there was no reason or purpose for 'Not Like Us' to even exist in the first place! 🤬

Alex with fantastic numbers, no one can say it's a weak number 1 anymore 😁
